Found this kit on eBay, untouched and waiting to be built. 😎 Many of the pieces are pre-cut. Additional drawings and instructions look to be pretty good 👍 Construction starts with a the frame. John Ruy Posted October 17, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted October 17, 2021 Strakes… I did not have the proper curve on the bottom of the dory. I believe it was the cork board I had it mounted to. I remounted to a good solid surface. Needed to soak the bottom with ammonia/water to get the wood the relax. Then had to use weights to get all off the frames to set down on the board. I let it dry out over night. Fared out the Frames, Gunwale and Deck to accept the strakes. These precuts were done nicely. Ran a bead of glue for the first strake or precut plank. Pinned the planks down… Sanded and/or carved away any excess material. Prepared for next strake to be set after stain has dried. John Ruy Posted October 19, 2021 Author Share #7 Posted October 19, 2021 Gunwale Strake… Glue applied… Gunwale Strake set. Removed the frame above the Gunwale. Next, I will need to level the Gunwale in preparation for the Cap. Sanding with 150 grit to level the Gunwale. All set for the Cap Rail, after a once over clean up. I am replacing the brass supports after another coat of stain. I wasn’t happy with the fit and finish of the plates. There goes the OCD again, we will see how they come out. A better strategy would probably be to use it’s the right amount. 😆 I also, now know why that call that bent board on the bow a “gripe”. 😊 What a pain that was to get right. 😎 This Dory makes for a great way to get a break from Bowdoin for a bit. Now the Seats, these would be normally removable so the Dory could be stacked on deck with other Dories Used copy of drawing to cut out seats. Seats are complete…. Oars, Mast and Sail still ahead. Marking 1/16” dowel rod… Cut then sand round the edges, leaving 1/4” above the rail. John Ruy Posted February 1, 2022 Author Share #16 Posted February 1, 2022 Sewing the Sail… Traced a pattern from the blueprints. Ironed and folded over the edge seams. Cut out the corner overlap. Sewed the 1/4” seam around the edge. The used Fray Check before trimming. Marked sheet seams with pencil. Sewed sheet seams and corner tabs. Colored white rigging rope supplied in the kit with custom mix of acrylic paint to look like Manila Rope. Glued on Bolt Rope. Then whip stitched the Bolt Rope in place. Sail completed and ready to set. Getting close…Cleats, Rigging and Oars left to build. John Ruy Posted February 2, 2022 Author Share #17 Posted February 2, 2022 Rigging… Lacing and tying off the sail to the Mast. Note the Snotter used to tighten up the sail with the Sprit Pole. Sail set and ready to run for home with a “boat load”of fish. The sail on “The Dory” was generally used to head home after a day fishing. Rowing out in the morning and Sailing with the wind in to shore. The Dory is finished. Nice little kit, a lot of fun to build.
