Hi I found a long boat project in the logs tat i considered very advanced, that is what I am planning next. I am looking at long boat,, life and other open utility boats

Pirate, as I suggested in another thread, it's really helpful if you're more specific when asking questions. There are a variety of kits out there and we can't know which one(s) you're referring to without details, links, or other assistance.

no Gregory but that is one I would consider, another is the HMS jolly boat, HMS long boat. ship ways ha 3. Also there are several life boats

IMHO the Medway Long boat is the better model and yes it is considered moderate to advanced.

Pirate,  as requested above can you be more specific? There is no such thing as an HMS jolly boat or HMS long boat.  The old ships (HMS Bounty, Victory, or whatever) carried a variety of boats such as cutters, long boats, launches et al depending on the era and ship but no life boats per se.  They were work boats used for various tasks but none were really meant to be used as life boats as we see on vessels in later years.  Certainly they could be used as such, but was not the reason they were on board.   Even on ships with 5 or 6 or even 7 boats, together they did not have the  capacity to act as life boats for hundreds of crew members.  The long boat for HMS Medway is a better, or perhaps,  the best way to go for a start.

This is very confusing.  You say liners, but what do you mean, cruise ships or something else?    HMS refers to RN vessels, not private merchant vessels such as freighters, liners, etc.    What year??   There were no boats designated as life boats before  1790.   From a few seconds of searching this popped up.

 

 

The first boat specialised as a lifeboat was tested on the River Tyne in England on January 29, 1790, built by Henry Greathead. The design won a competition organised by the private Law House committee, though William Wouldhave and Lionel Lukin both claimed to be the inventor of the first lifeboat.

I believe the HMS Bounty Jolly Boat you are referring to, would be the Artesania Latina Kit, there are several logs for this kit and i would say it is a beginners kit and good for entry level.

I only build ship models from scratch, but do faithfully read other’s experiences on the forum.  Remember, this advice is worth exactly what you paid for it!

 

We are constantly asked by novice builders to help them to salvage projects that have gone awry.  In a remarkable number of these, the kits are poorly engineered, the materials are of very poor quality, or both.  In many cases, builders are expected to defy the laws of nature to achieve results.  In the end, the builder decides that he or she can never develop the skill required and the project is abandoned.

 

Please, pick a well engineered kit built from quality materials!  Small open boats like you want to build can be difficult for beginners as their “scantlings” (structural members) are small.  Model Shipways, for example, offers a high quality longboat kit but it is 1:48 scale.  While this is the “museum scale” for ship models,  applied to this small boat it produces a tiny model.

 

The Medway Longboat Kit mentioned by Allan above is engineered by the same designer as the Model Shipways Longboat Kit.  It uses quality materials and at 1:24 it’s scale is twice that of the other Longboat Kit.  There is also a dedicated group build on the forum that you can join.

 

Re:  Lifeboat kits:  I assume that you are referring to a Titanic Lifeboat Kit.  Avoid like the plague!  This kit requires materials of dubious quality to be lapstrake planked.  There was a recent thread by someone trying to plank this poorly engineered kit.

The Artesania Latina Bounty Jolly Boat was the first kit with a planked hull that I ever finished.

 

It made me a good beginner kit.

 

However, I would also agree that the Medway Longboat would be an excellent first kit.

It’s not just the materials.  Lapstrake planking is a bit of an art form since the plank edges will be there for the life of the model for all to see.  Furthermore, where the plank runs into the stem and sternposts it is necessary to cut an overlapping groove called a “gain” into the plank to allow it to fit smoothly into the post.  As I recall, the instructions did not call for this leaving the guy trying to build the model with a mess.

 

For mass marketed commercial model kits you are stuck using the materials that they choose to provide.

thanks for your information, now i am finding ships boats and pinnace but i assume i would have the same problems as the long boats. i may end up doing a small ship
