Atlantic Schooner 1903 by Timothy Wood - Half Hull - Scale 1/8 = 1' - Finished

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

This will be the build log of the Schooner Atlantic (Half Hull).

post-260-0-12488500-1376085005.jpg

Some background history:

The Atlantic was built in 1903 by Townsend and Downey shipyard, and designed by William Gardner, for Wilson Marshall. The three-masted schooner was skippered by Charlie Barr and it set the record for fastest transatlantic passage by a monohull in the 1905 Kaiser's Cup race. The record remained unbroken for nearly 100 years.

Trans-Atlantic sailing record:

In 1905, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany proposed a race across the North Atlantic and put forward a solid gold cup to be presented to the winner. Eleven boats including the Kaiser's yacht Hamburg and the schooner Atlantic skippered by Charlie Barr took part.

The competitors encountered strong winds and gales which ensured a fast passage time and all eleven boats finished the race. Atlantic won, breaking the existing record with a time of 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds. The record stood for 75 years until broken by Eric Tabarly sailing the trimaran Paul Ricard. However Atlantic's monohull record stood for nearly 100 years until was broken in 1997 by the yacht Nicorette completing the crossing in 11 days 13 hours 22 minutes.

Passing of a legend:

Atlantic deteriorated and sank at the dock in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1982, the wreckage was removed for the installation of a floating dry dock at Metro Machine Shipyard.

Thanks Jay,

If you check the completed build photos, I posted the half hull of BlueJacket's Endeavour.  I found the kit was very builder friendly, so why not try it on my own doing a scratch build of another very beautiful and historic hull.

I called BlueJacket Ship Crafters in Maine and ordered the plans around two weeks ago, the people at BlueJacket are very friendly and easy to work with. My plans arrived promptly in the mail without any problems.  I then made ten copies of the plans, the reason for this is, I will need to cut out each lift then transfer it's dimension to the wood, after that's complete I'll cut out each lift with my bandsaw.  This will also be repeated with other areas on the plans.

Last Friday, I made the trip to Yukon Lumber in Norfolk, VA.  I consider it a "Wood Candy Store" they have an excellent selection of rough cut lumber and finished lumber.  They also offer finishing at a cost for the people who don't have access to a planer.

I selected Cherry for the backboard, then decided on Boxwood and African Mahogany for the hull.  I'll use the Basswood on the upper part of the hull above the waterline, this will be painted black on the finished hull, the African Mahogany will be used below the waterline and will not be painted.

I was hoping for good weather this weekend so I could get my wood milled and ready to be cut, but it appears the Weatherman is going to change my plans.

Cheers,

Tim

She's a beauty--it was kind of sad seeing the wreakage of her in the slings... :( The Bluejacket kit is sweet (albeit pricey), would be nice if more of their kits like this one were POB but the cost of conversion may be more than what the company can afford (just recently read that the owners are putting the company up for sale, as they are retiring).

They announced it in their last newsletter, I'm with you Tim--I also hope someone good takes the company! All my dealings with them have also been very positive. Recently ordered some dowels that the USPS totally destroyed, sent photos to BJ just to let them know. A whole new set was by priority mail in one of the most elaborate mailing tubes that I've ever seen--the postage & packing easily cost more than the dowels!

Jay,

Are you sure about Bluejacket.  ME recently posted to MSW (link: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/2911-hobby-kit-manufacturing-company-looking-for-investors-or-a-buyer-500k-negotiable/) about this.   Bluejacket is news to me also.

Yep Mark, I'm sure. Here's Jeff Marger's lead paragraph from BJ's 7/23/13 news letter:

"In last month's issue of ShipShape, I mentioned that Suzi and I were considering retirement, and that we were starting to look for potential new ownership for BlueJacket. Our major goals are to make sure that BlueJacket continues into the foreseeable future, that the company will be operated in the same manner as has been our tradition, and to insure the well-being of our employees."

Damn.. that's two, now.  I hope both companies get their wishes and find owners who will uphold the "traditions" instead milking them for profits.

I hear ya, Mark--both ME and BJ have set very high bars. I really hope the eventual new owners of both firms carry on their predecessors' business and customer-service ethics! I'd hate to see either bought by the ilk you describe--those who just want to wring out a buck regardless of the consequences; should that happen, I think it would result in the death of either firm. :(

Oi, just realized that this topic may be railroading Tim's build! Sorry, guy--I'll be quiet on this subject! :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Greetings,

We have had great weather the last few days which gave me a chance to get outside and plane my wood.  After I did my basic planing and cutting to size I still needed to plane each lift to the correct thickness.

This last photo is of all the lifts at their correct thickness with the profile drawing of the Atlantic placed on top for size.

My next step will be to cut each lift to the basic hull shape at it's corresponding position in the hull.

Cheers,

Tim

Last night I was able to get the first two lifts glued together, I'm working from the deck downward.  I use standard wood glue on the lifts, then clamp them for 24 hours.

Cheers,

The photos below show the first three lifts glued and the fourth lift with glue applied and finally clamped to the top three lifts.  Rather time consuming, but well worth it in the end.

Cheers,
