A base of the forecastle with the curved sides is glued to it.

The planking has started. At the bottom, first 3 regular planks and above that, clinker planking will be placed.

And the lowest deck is planked. This will be virtually invisible later, so I didn't spend much time on it.

Since the forecastle houses the 'heads',  do you want to cut out waste holes for, say, a three-holer on each side?  Having to carry waste out in buckets to throw over the side is a non-value added activity ... and risks soiling the side of the hull - or slipping in heavy swells and spilling it over the deck!

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100, Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100 Billings, Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

good question. I haven't really thought about this.

Anyone have any suggestions??

:D If i remember well, someone built a ship from the same era which named Pelican and renamed later to Golden Hind (i know the differences though :D )  So at the forecastle's bottom holes (pun intended) would be sufficient i guess. The only difference that Mary Rose's sailors could enjoy the heads in rain as they are covered by the forecastle.

Perhaps the planks  nearby could be “butted” together.

Nice build by the way enjoy seeing  how you build sections up.

Slowhand,

Current build - Polacca scratch build from Amati plan

previous builds

San Martin - Occre

H.MS Resolution - Corel

Half Moon - Corel

I had an extensive discussion with that person (in front of the mirror ;)).
We will provide heads in the fore castle. There is definitely room for 4

Now the Mary Rose was built way before there was anything like a Sears catalog, but a source indicates that in Roman times there was a sponge on a stick placed in a water bucket at the latrines, and all the men used the same implement to clean themselves.  Maybe there was something like that in Henry's time.

Apart from this is really need research, i don't think that sponge thing. Ancient Romans were surrounded the Mediterranean where natural sponges was plenty. But in cold seas this feature should prove damn expensive, and sailors weren't so refined to allow themselves such luxury. I guess they clean their parts once a day, maybe twice a week? Bathing by saltwater, using a bucket, no more.

That brought back a few memories for me. Back in the 1960's I was in the RAF and stationed in Bahrein our sea angling club used to regularly go on weekend fishing trips on Arab boats. No such luxury as a sponge on a stick there,a packing case hung over the stern with a plank knocked out of the bottom and a bucket on a rope for ones ablutions. No one I knew took bog paper with them  Happy days,at least the sea was warm there.

And I'm pretty sure this is why women weren't on ships back then. I could think of few things I would like less! 😬

Forecastle update.

All frames are placed

A temporary support is placed at the top.
And there are 2 cannon ports. To place 4 according to the Anthony roll, the fore castle is too small in my opinion.

The interior finish is in the same line as the rearcastle.

The higher planking is according to the clinker method

Perhaps this is not the time to repeat the joke about the Scottish soldiers and the wire brush?

heads, toilets... yes or no?
when I was on a NATO maneuver in West Germany  (1983). If you had to... Then you dug a hole, covered it with sand, and that's it.
Or there was a forest full of trees....

off topic, but...
Much later I had a Polish colleague at work who is the same age as me.
I said it was their fault that I had to join the army. because the Warsaw Pact was preparing an invasion of Western Europe.
No he said, I had to join the army because NATO was preparing an invasion against the Warsaw Pact.

Just my 5 eurocents : It's ok putting extra effort in extra detail as long as it is visible/noticeable.

Off topic : also served in Germany 1982-1983.

Kind regards

The shape of the front part under the bowsprit still needs to be adjusted.
How exactly, I don't know yet

And in the log from @djford we @Louie da fly had the question how to get to the lowest deck of the fore castle.

Exceptionally  images from the book. According to them it is possible that the ladder on cabin 4 continues to this deck on the fore castle

20241125_173040.jpg.251c535d7a37f1b4f72721a6b8a6e9f0.jpg

According to that explanation it could be something like this

Fore castle 1/50  drawing 1/100

Actually, this is not possible i think
If this staircase (yellow) continues at the back of cabin 4 (white area) further on the outside of the castle, you'll be stuck against the anti-boarding net (red).
The staircase(s) must therefore be in the castle

A less exposed companion (ladder) inside the castle would make more sense as well. Should the ship be boarded, it would be much easier to defend on the castle than an exterior ladder or pair of ladders.

Be sure to sign up for an epic Nelson/Trafalgar project if you would like to see it made into a TV series  http://trafalgar.tv

I agree with that.

A narrow, steep ladder far forward would be conceivable. In a very confined space with a narrow staircase, boarding parties would have difficulty storming the fort. One after the other they could be repelled from above.

Thus, the narrowness would be strategically advantageous.

Indeed, a ladder inside.

the pointed shape of fore castles like this  are really awkward.
No wonder that they later switched to another more spacious shape (galleon).
