Really nice work David.  I'm glad to hear you pinned the channels with wire ---- good precaution.

Now you still need to tell your fellow Niagara builders where to put their cannonballs!

Hello David, I have yet to post on your log yet but I must say your build is looking great!  I am blown away at the huge bowsprit the Niagara has, I mean check out the nose on that one...  Beyond your beautiful bowsprit, the deck details like the capstan and the pump, channel plates are all first class.

Hi David,

Just went through your log from the beginning for the first time.  A really nice piece of work.  I look forward to your stepping the masts.  Rigging is my favorite part and I have a long, long way to go.

I've finished fashioning the some of the yards.  There are a number of shape changes on the main yards so this time I started with a squared piece of wood rather than a dowel rod.  This made the changes in the yards shape much easier.

Completed the main and fore mast.  All parts are dry fitted.  It is my intention to NOT glue the mast sections together.  Rather I intend to build them as a real ship and hold them in place with only the rigging.  This will also make it easier to adjust the masts to the right angle and be sure the are properly adjusts abaft.

David,

As usual, your work looks very good and inspiring. Your plan on not gluing the mast sections together is intriguing. Is this a common approach for model ship building?

Larry,

I don't know if it is common or not...but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.  BTW...I did glue the cross trees to the buttresses.

Hello David,

Somewhere along the line, between rejoining and rebuilding logs, I completely missed yours. My apologies.

But I must say, she is a beauty and a great piece of work.

I especially love the color combination you're using.

Fantastic! From now on you're on my wacthlist again.

Take care,

Anja

Now the foremast is finished.  The masts are not at the proper angel, they are just sitting in the mast holes.

Next step is to add the cleats to the masts and some of the rigging.  Then it is time to begin rigging the foremast.  Before starting the rigging I served the mast shrouds.

The fore mast is rigged.  The lower dead eye lanyards are not yet glued in place.  I will wait until the rest of the mast is rigged.  Then I can use the lanyards to make any final adjustments to ensure the mast is set properly both starboard/port and fore/aft.

The lanyard on the right of the 2nd picture is setup as it will look when finished.

Awesome job, Dave. Hope I can do nearly as well when I start mine. I just finished deck work on Fair American, so I should be done in 3 months. Then I will re-read your blog in detail. I love the paint job you have put on the ship.

Thank you for the kind comments Steve.  It has been months since I have worked on my wonderful Niagara  :(  but I am now back at it.  The first issue is to remember exactly where I left off in February.  I think I have no figured this out and am setting things up to continue.  I should have some more news in the next few days and maybe some pics a few days later.  In any case it is good to be back at it and to be part of MSW again.  :P
