HMS Hood 1941 by Johngr - FlyHawk - 1:700 - PLASTIC

Recommended Posts

HMS Hood 1941 - FlyHawk - 1:700

After two paper models and since the weather was more suitable for painting, I started the HMS Hood.
I also added a wooden Deck and masking Sheet kit at a very good price for more realism. The kit has a lot of small parts and seems to be very well detailed.

First I tried the application of the wooden deck and it seems to be excellent.

The journey has begun and I have the impression that this will be quite a long one.
Initially the two parts of the hull were glued but especially on one side the application is not perfect, leaving a very small step. I used Mr.color dissolved putty and after letting it dry for a day I sanded it down.

I have to admit that it was quite a difficult task as the surface along its entire length is not flat and in fact in a place where there is a small protrusion the surface is very small and does not allow easy access.

Nevertheless, after enough rubbing with different grits, it seems that the result will probably be better than before. Surely this will be seen when the first layer of primer falls.

The next step is to remove some surface details and open the corresponding holes once and later the supplied turned metal ones will be installed which are really excellent.

That's all for now. Good night to all.

For now I installed the wooden  decks by first applying a thin layer of PVA glue. I have to say they really add quite a bit to the whole look.

On top of the wooden deck I placed the masks provided in the kit but the real challenge was fitting the brass pieces some of which are less than 1mm.

No significant progress these days. Masking the hull took a considerable amount of time and the paint had to dry completely for the next layers.

Man, the Hood is a stunning ship.  Look at her.  You are doing her justice... 🫠

While it may not be anything you can use, there is a YouTube modeler videoing his 1/350 build of the Trumpeter Hood.  His site is "David's Ships".  Even though he is building to a different scale, a different manufacturer, and likely has different goals there might be a tidbit in there that is useful.  I know his build series has been helpful in my Graf Spee.  Helped me organize things for my most adventurous project yet.  I kinda like how he discusses mistakes and how to fix them.  I know you won't make any, but...

Too many very small items to be placed on the deck. The process will take some time but I have to say that the wooden deck is very nice even though in many places I had loosened it and had to re-glue it with super glue. It seems that the first gluing I did with the PVA glue did not have the result I expected. Maybe they needed more.

Beautiful job weathering that wood deck.

My build will be lightly weathered because the Admiral Graf Spee did not take fire till the 'Battle of River Plate'.  I am either going to model her as she left Germany or as she looked before she sported the bow wave and the second darker grey camo pattern.  I love the bow wave, but that is how most model her and I hanker to be different...

Anyway, if you could summarize the techniques you used to weather those wood decks I would be forever in your debt.  I have never implemented a wood deck and paralysis by analysis is starting to take hold🤪

Yes of course I took it out, but I saw that the glue on the edges was not strong enough for that and I put the PVA. Unfortunately, probably my fault, the glue was not strong enough and I fixed it with super glue.

I implemented a very simple technique after much experimentation. First I applied a very light layer of color using colored pencils. Here I used AK  weathering pencils 10016 & 10017. Then I removed most of the color with an eraser.

Looking good.  As for wooden deck and plastic hull..... PVA won't work as it's not for plastic.  The CA was/is a better choice.

I have used the combination successfully many times, but in this particular case the glue was probably to blame!! Nevertheless, I agree that CA is a better choice but I try to avoid it as much as possible!

She's looking good, John. 👍

Another glue you might look for is canopy glue. It looks like a white glue, but handles gluing brass etch to plastic nicely. It does dry slow and if you can use some weights or clamps to ensure the parts touch. One brand is Pacer 560. You might find it in an RC airplane shop. It was developed to glue their canopies to their aircraft. ;)

Thank you Ken,

A very good solution is also the ultra glue from MIG. For some strange reason, while I have bought it, I haven't used it!!🤔

Too many details and too many small parts but without facing any particular issue, but the chimney was a very demanding job with such fragile and delicate parts.

That MIG Ultra Glue does the trick.

After watching how 'Dave' is attaching his PE to the Hood in the YouTube Hood build, I decided to give it a try.  David is using heavy super glue because of the slow(ish) drying time and then fixing it into place with extra thin super glue.  The thick glue gives him time to move the part around, the thin glue locks it into place.  I was all set - but my thick glue managed to become set in the bottle over time.  So, no bueno.

Had to try the Ultra Glue.  It works great for the purpose of a slow drying fix.  It dries clear and it doesn't seem to be nasty on the residue.  Then, I lock the part into place with the extra thin.

We shall see.  My first PE is a bit messy, but starting to get the hang of it.  I haven't painted any of it yet.  Again, we shall see.

Very slow progress, all the parts are too small and require too much concentration.
