Ferriera by rwiederrich - Based on Revell Cutty Sark - PLASTIC

Recommended Posts

I tend to build ships that manufacturers don't build...and I wanted to build the Ferriera..the Portugues Barkenine of the CS.

She was caught in a storm..and her cargo shifted and she nearly capsized..resulting in her dismasting of her main and top mizzen mast.  She spent much of het time in coastal waters and back water ports.  I chose to model her in these conditions.  She was extremely under maintained and was in severe need of nerw paint and maintenance.

The base is wood then the harbor soil is applied...then corner pollars and the water base that is plexiglass coated in epoxy to form the rippled water surface.

Ship hull is fit in a pre-cut hole for the ship.  I will begin to post images of itw construction.

Thanks for posting.

Hi Rob
Nice job on your model. A different take to the norm.
Here's a photo of her circa 1907 at our local docks. (Some of the buildings are still there!)
Slightly different paintwork on her here though.

I have the Revell 1/96th put up for later.

HI Rob

Was she owned by the Ferriera family by the time your picture was taken?

I believe so, the NMM has the date as 1910

in Birkenhead, but she's actually tied up in the Wallasey Docks.

Indeed Scott...It is my habbit to display my models in dioramas that represent an actual historical even in the ships life.

I feel display can be a powerful media to encourage the interest of sailing ships and what they represented to our nautical history in those who might otherwise just give a passing glance to all the work we put into our models.

The model simply lifts off the 4 pillars so I can seporate  it from its base to work on it.

*Look do you see*...the *stuff* on the harbor bottom.......begins the excited inspection of the model.........and its surroundings.

Thanks for your fine comments.

Rob-

I think it's great that you're modeling this ship as it was at a certain point in her career;  People seem to ignore the fact that many of these famous vessels had more than one "life";  Indeed, many of us humans share the same fate.  Keep up the good work, and never be discouraged...

Sometimes what I feel is a good subject to model..others find off beat...and distracting.  Thanks for the fine compliments......I will finish the Ferreira and then begin my next build...in similar fashion...with the ship doing what it was designed to do.....sail.  The Medium clipper Donald McKay on heavy seas with short sails set.

Thanks Mark..that's OK......I'm not really worried..since this build is not your typical plank on frame wood model...which seams to get the majority of hits around here.  I use multi media to build my models...and re-engineering of existing hulls.  Hey.... it boils down to this simple desire....I want a particular ship model and no manufacturer makes it...so I use what I have to make it myself....by using the simplest and easiest means...re-engineering.

Thanks again.
