Hello everyone.

My name is Dave, I'm from Ukraine.

I want to introduce you to my first model - the Columbus caravel "Nina" (real name Santa Clara) scratch. I've been working on the model for a little over a year now and I'm slowly finishing it. My tools are the most common; the only power tools I have are a screwdriver with a flexible shaft.

I will be glad to receive advice, tips and criticism 🙂IMG_20240612_152212_078.thumb.jpg.ae1694eb31d691d1b7d3e2971a1674dd.jpgIMG_20240612_142332_559.jpg.b2d4ffe4494eeb607ee2bfdca9572c59.jpgIMG_20240612_142324_666.thumb.jpg.7c6765383755ef50878820f6df0ab67b.jpgIMG_20240612_142324_359.jpg.74518f0ef3f9f0ed24cfcc9189b7bbf3.jpgIMG_20240612_143138.jpg.d4c5aaa897c512bfff4bfcb6cdb6768d.jpgIMG_20240612_142324_893.jpg.fe6c52a4b991ac448eb72594e655efdf.jpgIMG_20240612_142324_242.jpg.ee0b4a54940095ad92473d762f1bb882.jpgIMG_20240612_142333_364.thumb.jpg.554994feb716ea72db111f2cab1fdd47.jpgIMG_20240612_142324_887.jpg.49aedd0dd67186c8f57ccad093e98bd3.jpgIMG_20240612_142332_715.thumb.jpg.54fbe9d9f1e17f0e59eccf00340b95ff.jpgFurther in real time...

First of all, this is one of the best reconstructions of the Nina I have ever seen.

Gentlemen, thank you for your kind words.

How did you build yours completely without power tools?

I don’t even know what to answer you :-). I had to buy some things from my friend - slats for the hull (mahogany) and for the decks (walnut), round blanks for masts and yards, a grate for the hatch, black ropes and an anchor rope. And I made everything else myself using hand tools (knife, wire cutters, pliers, files, jigsaw, scissors, various sandpapers...). The only power tool I have is an electric screwdriver with a flexible shaft, which I have used to make many different holes.IMG_20240614_111344.thumb.jpg.cc3db9ffc3c7b6ef2008023dba1e1bd4.jpg

Welcome, Dave. An excellent depiction of a latin caravel with authentic detail. Which plans did you use? Could you do a build log step by step for us?

Cheers

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

Yes Paul, you are right, I will continue to work on this model and post updates here.

Dick, I have several different plans in electronic form and I study them as needed)). At your request, I will show photographs that I took during the work process.IMG_20230613_142930.thumb.jpg.9cfcb8bd110309c089920b6b335f1f41.jpgIMG_20230804_221545.thumb.jpg.c7ec5c81090eb08e98dd4e5879a0163e.jpgIMG_20230818_133710.thumb.jpg.74978881503a6861414d551584118f0e.jpgIMG_20230818_143057.thumb.jpg.7d6e8a21b358d50712f7fb07625a1a31.jpgreceived_1351291705484711.thumb.jpeg.39d7a6594184ebb1f3ad52eb5cf1c4ea.jpegIMG_20231103_132540.thumb.jpg.02613dcfefc7348b8429936af0d98938.jpgIMG_20231214_122447.thumb.jpg.15bfc600a38d3a71eeb0ffdafc9cf9a0.jpgIMG_20231214_122311.thumb.jpg.1f9df6ca19abfeef5c3845241920b678.jpgIMG_20240214_220812_390.thumb.jpg.05a9b87f0e92349e2c9b0203cf76586b.jpgIMG_20240215_110411.thumb.jpg.a4b8fc5dbf02c2418a141fb6010d570f.jpgIMG_20240412_145852.thumb.jpg.4c06d1533869bc8c69357af0b8ca0efb.jpgIMG_20240310_133022_421.jpg.2179ab95f18f2718ef2cb0beb26ed2a3.jpgIMG_20240310_133022_581.thumb.jpg.51f603fb2892a9245fe0ddd26473a332.jpgIMG_20240310_133022_343.thumb.jpg.7e09b3d02c2165d24a7a8f520da7b168.jpgIMG_20240527_181257.thumb.jpg.828f658ede01d372bfeb7d2db4249aba.jpgIMG_20240425_164522.thumb.jpg.aaa24cf1b77537a902940b7436b7df0f.jpgPicsart_24-05-14_16-43-24-932.thumb.jpg.b2d83910c4e3f528407508d218367a57.jpg

Well done Dave!  Fine detailed work.

Is the scale really 1: 72? It seems a lot bigger for me.

Thank you! Perhaps some details are indeed larger than they should be, but overall I try to stick to this scale.

When taking into account scale, you should always try to err on the side of things being too small. If it looks like it's out of scale, it's probably much too big. I work at the scales of 1/96 and 1/100, so I should know this. For example, here's a detail shot of my current project:

image.png.13027d313252be29b9fe7a32daf676c9.png

I have a 1/96 scale figure from one of the kits I've done, and I check the sizes of all the pieces of equipment on deck against that figure. For example, the smaller maneuvering anchor is about half the size of a man (maybe 3 feet max) and the cat tackle device is about 8 feet tall at scale.

Due to my new job, my free time has decreased, but I have done something. Now I am sewing sails - here is a sail for a mizzen mast. Of course, not perfect, but so far the best result 🙂IMG_20240702_070850.thumb.jpg.2f6d492aaf3709ce02de1ba771ab5c32.jpgIMG_20240702_070831.thumb.jpg.a8a1428a6954b8a9c004593182bc598f.jpgAnd here is the sail on the bonaverture mast. I sewed this sail first, so there are some mistakes. To be honest, I don’t like this sail, and maybe I’ll make a new one and throw this one away.IMG_20240627_183140.thumb.jpg.c01cf7f3cd8e6d27f275848f605a2f66.jpgIMG_20240627_183159.thumb.jpg.6750c297d52147bbb36a548d0ca3504e.jpgBy the way, these two sails are not completely ready yet. Later, I will sew ropes along the edges and also form loops.

Parrels and flags. It would be best to make the flags from fabric, but I don’t have that option yet, so I chose the simple option and made them from paper. Perhaps I will replace them with more suitable ones later.IMG_20240729_172835.thumb.jpg.f1b6f3c652e68a7d92924e850126d249.jpgIMG_20240729_172940.thumb.jpg.814bb839e9754d3226d2cd8be93085f3.jpgBy the way, I will hang the yards as shown in this diagram1238001908.0.269404001238001908.jpg.754d97903042b1feb0cb5c6d3c327b72.jpg

Bob, nothing definite yet. I had an idea to test my own skills at 1:250 scale. But for this I will probably need some kind of engraver with various precision attachments... So this remains just a thought, although someday I may implement it. There was also an idea to build “Pinta” on a scale of 1:72, which was also Columbus’s caravel. In any case, I won’t rush into the next model...
