Welcome to my Bluenose log(s). Same model, two  manufacturers . One is a solid hull the other is another ship that Rodney gave me before he passed away.  I want them to look the same , so I will be painting  both hulls together. Thats why two for one.

Part One :

The Scientific Bluenose.  It is a solid hull kit with old lead deadeyes and dories. Both have the same history..

20250624_125210.thumb.jpg.de81c372a660d9e357e2aa1ac66774ac.jpg

First up is to open the box and see what I got.

20250624_115300.thumb.jpg.fec95afbbb0efd23f98afe76170f8c59.jpg

20250624_115513.thumb.jpg.e6828e83a5ddb6e37eaa8de580ae85a7.jpg

The kit cost $16.95 in 1968, I paid $10.00.

I put everything in separate containers,  and looked at the plans .

20250624_122842.thumb.jpg.664af381055a2f4feb0d5fda9db50a5d.jpg

The plans say to use a utility  knife and cut out the pieces.  I did one and then used the scroll saw for the rest.

20250625_190736.thumb.jpg.56cb6838b11eafb164e8b77b8226fc00.jpg

Then I glued on the keel pieces

20250625_204142.thumb.jpg.cb0a18f7ad2ae47b5ee6bd92780ccdf4.jpg

20250625_192025.thumb.jpg.b14001497a07fd9705761393dc828e90.jpg

Fitted the two decks, and glued them on. Applied some weight and let it dry. Tomorrow will be a lot of filling and sanding.  After I install the forward and aft Bulwarks, the hull will be ready for painting. Then I will do a part two and get the Billings Boat ready to paint as well.

Both will be copper hull red, as like  @John Ruy did with his Bluenose.

I don't  know were PFCGP  is now, apparently he got arrested for being under the influence of alcohol in Texas 🤔.  He's not Canadian, come to think of it, I don't know what he is. But he is on a plane to somewhere and said find another Inspector  He will be hard to replace

20250625_210635.thumb.jpg.28b9061b866e6dbd1b1e8635128ee27b.jpg

It is glued down for the night, and meet Freddie Fisherman, my new ships inspector,  my good freind @Gabek printed out this for me, he had a pipe but ,,Gabe had a bit of a problem with it and pipe never printed right,  internet files not his lol. Anyway I personally like the non smoking Freddie,  more on him later.

I stained and sealed the deck, I also gave a coat of shellac  to the hull.   Now I can sand the hull and then apply some filler. The reason for the sealer before I filled it, is because if we filled first,  the wood sucks the moisture out of the filler and it may fall out latter.20250626_223703.thumb.jpg.d0a8e077068861d7384630927d205df3.jpg 20250626_222700.thumb.jpg.cca65d4d86f3be940d61e564c50a7242.jpg

Sanding just  this little  bit, she going to be smooth. Lol.  The wood is balsa, and very soft and dry, brittle a bit but I have lots of filler.

I cut the fantails out, broke one but fix able. It is going to be a slow process,  but I take my time and cut slowly  with many strokes , not just one cut.20250626_224714.thumb.jpg.4cbc68b13ca889d80c4d1585376061ec.jpg

This wee kit is turning out to be a lot of fun. If I can  I take My time , but I just want to build and build, there are ratlines  to tie , sails to make, right after I learn how, lol. But the is a wealth  of info here on MSW on sails, I am excited  to try to make sails for this ship. It's an older model, but hopefully I can make it a little  beautiful ship   🚢 ️.

.  Thanks for looking in,

Knocklouder

Pretty sure I spotted him hanging out with my longhorns.  They are a bad influence.  Sorry about that, Bob.

Regardless, looks like you are off to a great start.  Looking forward to watching this come together.

The first coat of filler was applied  last night. This morning  ,I  sanded it and gave it a coat of primer. I just brush on the frist primer as I know more filling  then a spray coat  of primer later, when she just about ready for the final  coat, but lots to do before then.

20250627_101913.thumb.jpg.901ceb9f33f065b0e6db07184bf5ecd2.jpg

20250627_104333.thumb.jpg.9aca162d8117fde2ab67979731f3ddaf.jpg

So letting  the primer  dry  I will cut and number all the parts.some look pretty  tiny.

I find the bigger  ofla knive works better than the smaller one.

Lots of filling and sanding to go but loving  every  moment  of the build. There are a lot of Bluenose  logs here on MSW so I should not have any problems that's can't be solved by looking at them

Thanks for looking in on my log, and for the likes and incredible support  here.

Yesterday I  cut all the pieces  out and numbered  them.

Then started placing the pieces on but not glued down

Soon ll the deck parts were placed then put away for later.20250627_131457.thumb.jpg.090e2e6fa78cfc3267fa114f3f8b8a2d.jpg

I made and attached  the stand, I figured  if I attached  it now then take it off ,I could repair any damages if needed , yes they were needed lol.

20250627_190541.thumb.jpg.705408e8b604b05b39837b011a9b3262.jpg

Here is my stand waiting for the final installment.

20250627_164524.thumb.jpg.86afb042deca9d92714b802fb2f8e398.jpg

Coming  together,  time to get ready to paint .:D. A few more things to look after then I will start by painting  the black first.

 Which  brings me to,

  PART TWO:

Rodney's  Bluenose;

20250627_185259.thumb.jpg.b7ac312e515305532c4cf0e97f28e424.jpg

I will repaint the black and change the hull colour to copper hull red.

20250627_184033.thumb.jpg.ea702d1e01bef9dcea7aaf688002e931.jpg

20250627_184025.thumb.jpg.aff5e3d8c8e5a816af5e241e4667d506.jpg

Most of deck furniture  is installed, everything  needs repainting

20250627_185951.thumb.jpg.e433b13973cf71c8e07f6b991d86bbaf.jpg

20250627_190008.thumb.jpg.3a612dd11e929f5a576d29400136ed2e.jpg

The Billings Boat hull is finished  like I say, just repainting  what is there ,it  is Rodney's  work and  I will leave it as is.

Once the  black is done both ships will be sprayed.

Following  @John Ruy Bluenose  log, if I get close the that I would be a happy painter. His work is amazing,  and one of the reason I chose to make Bluenoses The first  time I looked at his logs I new I wanted to try that.

I have a bit of a fix to do on the dreaded bow spirit mast,  it starting all ready lol, at @Keith Black erging  a nose guard  will be made very shortly, lol, I  will not breaking this one of 4 or 5 times.:D

20250627_171838.thumb.jpg.440e971010deb6612da6b4de2711a39f.jpg

It is an eazy  fix, once done the black on both ships.will start.

I feel like a kid doing a 1968 model, this Scientific Bluenose  is fun, I may look at getting  others.

20250627_133256.thumb.jpg.0e658e6f89554b9a019e2998f0e12ba6.jpg

I just wished I could  buy them at 1968 prices and no---- tariffs  .

To the spray both we go Talk soon.

No Keith,  sadly  this was not his first offence,  regrettable  he's not getting out.for a long time.

So painting  is going full out today. Starting  with the Billings,  repainted  the black and applied  a clear coat.20250628_142330.thumb.jpg.36e7a48885104e55e5638d1094e1548a.jpg

The Scientific  is still in the paint shop waiting for second  coat on the black,  then clear coat,  after that I going to leave it for a few days to really  dry up. They is lots of deck things to make and paint.

20250628_160925.thumb.jpg.f114db9e249287540190acde826401e6.jpg

Once the black is done and the copper color is finished on both ,I think I will rig the Billings Boat frist,  then the Scientific.

Rodney  has tray full of blocks, deadeyes, one hole blocks Up to four hole blocks  . These blocks  are way better  than the ones in the Scientific,  so I use then for it after , I am sure I will have lots left.

Back to the paint shop, rudder  repairs on the BB. the SM. Is good to go , this is so exciting,  the spray gun is warming up, as soon as I read the instructions  lol.

Good Morning;

The ship's are back from the paint shop, so far I am really happy with the work.

20250628_172745.thumb.jpg.d0842477effad763fbe2436a71c4ea05.jpg

I thought today I would spray the copper hull red  from Tamiya Color, but decided to wait  till Monday to give it more time to dry.

I will  put the cap rails on the SB, and paint them white  Rodney  has  the cap rail white on the stern and black on the forward  one. The SB has them all white, I don't  know which  is right, but I will look into it and make them the same.  Another difference  os the Bowsprit mast,  white on the BB but stain light brown on the SB.

Oh well they will look good when sprayed.

So I will start to put the deck furniture together,  the Billings Boat  needs a few grates put in and all the pieces  repainted white and the Scientific Bluenose  has to be made and painted ,so lots of fun stuff to do. And I can start work on the masts as well.  Thanks for the likes and incouragement  as I journey  on.          Knocklouder

Photographs of Bluenose in her racing days show her cap rails as pale from bow to stern. The images were in black & white, of course, so I cannot say whether the rails were actually white, though that is very likely.

In the same images, her bowsprit appears in a medium grey, so definitely not painted white. Most likely, it was finished as oiled wood -- hence a light brown stain in a model.

Agreed Trevor… White cap rails stem to stern. The same for the bulwarks. The Bow Sprit definitely oiled, I would stain it light brown also, as I did mine.  There you have it Bob…

The Bluenoses are looking good. 👍
