Well, the times are a-changing and so I could do both today. I finished the Standing rigging the last few days... step by step and no more than about an hour a day. But I have time .. if I had the Money I have the time... I colored all Standing rigging black, the shrouds and ratlines are somewhere between bad and top - but as it is my first bulid I say ist quite ok. I learned a lot doing the shrouds and I am sure the next time it will be better. I used the original knot. Today I mounted the yard on the bowsprit (did not find the english word for it, in German it is Blinderah) and the rigging for it. I attached some pics to show the progress. I hope you like them. I finished the running rigging for the bowsprit and the foremast today. Well... I was so frightened by this challenge... but: I LOVE it. Doing the rigging is really a fun - all has a System, and when you understood the system its just a very satisfying - but tricky Job. It is great Next will be the mainmast... and the mizzen at last. It seems to be a good kit - and the ship itself was a ship of der Kurbrandenburgische Marine - the only real navy in German history before 1850. Thes naval history of Germany is not to compare with England, Holland or at least Spain. But there are some remarkable kits on the market that give a good impression of that part of history from abou 1650 to 1800. Euromodels Derfflinger and Freidrich Wilhelm were part of this navy - just as Corels Frigate Berlin or Golden Yacht - all of them are on my wishlist So I will ask my secretary of financial affais - aka my wife - what ship will be possible. The Roter Löwe costs about 300 Euros - and tahts quite a lot just for a hobby. But on the other side - it takes its time to build it and has no costs to follow up. So we will se. For your information: The Friedrich Wilhelm is about 750 Euros, the Berlin 480 Euros. But I will make a break - spring has arrived, Summer will come, I love to be out with the dogs or on my motobike, in my garden there is a BBQ ... you see: It will be fall before I start a new project. I have finished my Half Moon now - made a stand with the Amati board as base, two brass pillars and a brass plate with the ship's name. I layed down some ropes on the deck and fixed some in the shrouds - well, that's it now. As a kind of conclusion I realize this build as a great expierence. The first day, when I opened the box and just saw some wooden stripes, some pieces of precut plywood and a small box with all the fittings, blocks, yarn etc - I never thought that I would be able to create a ship out of this. Well, now, as the challenge is done I admit that this parts fit together to a adoreable model. It is my interpretation of the Half Moon - sure different to the models made by other modellers. I did the building mostly out of the box, only some parts as the inner planking were changed or the abnegation of any color (only the mars is black). For me it was important to see if I can do this kind of modelling as I had no expierence with this before. Sure I build a lot of kits - plastic like trucks, motorbikes, buildings (H0-dioramas) but wooden modelships are a world for their own. And I love this world. The Half Moon was the first wooden ship but sure it was not the last one. Next will be Roter Löwe by Mamoli - as soon as possible. I bought an quite old book with plans from wellknown german ships and will try to modify the Roter Löwe. Time will show if this works. I was overwhelmed by the kindness here in this Forum. All of you was so nice, so helpful, so funny all the time - even when I thought I will give in - there was someone to give me the kick to go on. Just to sit on the PC and watch the log of other modellers is so calming. As mentioned before I bought a very popular (within the small scene of modellers for historic ships) book from the late 1970 (published in the former German Democratic Republic or East Germany). This book contains a lot of Story and knowledge behind the popular sorces - and 11 plates of drawings. Ist a perfect base for developing plans and ideas for the coming build.
