Hi,

Just finished looking through your log, lovely build.

I am building the Surprise of Master & Commander fame and one of the tasks will be to build the ships boats which at 1:75 scale will be about 80-90mm long so I am interested in your small hull build. I will be doing something similar in timber, working over formers which are removed when planking is complete.

Interestingly I live in a 1920's house which has a pretty original looking brass name plate on the front "Ingomar". Mr Google is not very forthcoming about the meaning, have you come across any info about the name?

Cheers,

David.

Hi M Taylor, Navis Factorem and Donny

Many thanks for your compliments and comments. Navis, great to hear about your impending small boat construction. Incidentally, I've got a previous scratch build log called "Dorade", a famous Sparkman and Stevens yawl, which you may want to look up. The Dorade model was made entirely of wood, using bent frames over wooden formers, which may of some value to you.

Unfortunately, as far as any history/background about the name Ingomar, I've precious little, too. Not a common name, that's for sure!

Have a great weekend, all of you!

Thanks

Hi everyone. Well, I've been off sick today, so had a little bit of time to work on the boat (in between rests). As you can see, I've done some more of the internal bulkheads. I've also done a cardboard template to simulate the staircase in the main companionway. That's the funny triangle thingy in white cardboard.

Hope you enjoy the photos and have a great weekend!

Cheers

Hello Omega, just came across your building log here. Very impressive, congratulations. I would say this is really inspiring!

I particularly like the photo with the model kept in your hand. Gives a good idea on the real scale. At 1/192 scale this is TINY!

Keep up the good work!

What a wee little thing.  You must be very good with tweezers. and have a good eye.  or do you use trained carpenter ants to do the job under your supervision?

We usually had a few miniaturist come to the contest every year.  And we would kid them a little bit.  I remember one came in and said he went to trained spiders and brought a model of the Conny at 1/64.  Needless to say it was beautiful but unless you had a large lense you could not see all the detail with the naked eye.  He said he got rid of the ants because they would not build at a smaller scale. :D

Magnificent work so far.  Keep it up.

Hi David and Elmer

Thanks for your kind likes!  David, I especially love the comments about the carpenter ants and the spiders!!! I do wonder sometimes, why I love building at such small scales.  On the one hand, it's simply because the RC yachts got too big and too many; so building small made perfect sense.  On the other hand, wow, it's fun to see just how much can be done at such small scales,  I know, I know, I know, you need a magnifying glass to see the work, but, it's such a satisfying achievement to hold this 12 cm long thing in your hand and say to yourself..."I created this..."

I'm sure the same feeling goes for all of us, no matter what scale we build at.

Have a great weekend and happy modelling!

Omega I have had the pleasure of knowing several modelers who build on the small side.  A couple who have passed away may they rest in peace and those who are still active.  One of them is a member of the Midwest Model Shipwrights and has done miracles though I have not been able to attend meetings this year I am kept abreast of his work.  Another lives up in WI and builds superb ships in a bottle and has literally revolutionized the hobby.  Some members of this forum have heard of him.  John Fox III.   And I have learned many things from them all.

Thanks David. I've just Googled John Fox III's website and wow! Amazing. As my late Dad used to say, "You never stop learning until the day you die". One look at John Fox's models and those of other modellers on this site, proves that we can never stop learning and being inspired by other people's skills and talents.

Thanks for the tip about this very talented craftsman! I'ill definitely bookmark his site for future reference,

Thanks, once again.

Several years ago John came to Manitowoc.  I know he was coming and on the models he was bringing he brought one that he said was a secret.  When I greeted him at the door he smiled and asked me what I thought of his watch case smiling.  I took a look and almost fainted.  He had built a miniture of the Connie at the scale needed to fit it.  We took it over to the miniature table and looked at it through the glasses we had borrowed from the museum.  If you had a microscope you would have still seen detail.

Hi MTaylor. Thanks for your Like. Today, I was cleaning the display cabinet and thought this was a good opportunity for a miniature fleet shot! In the accompanying photos, you'll see my model of the HMS Pandora (hull only, no masts or rigging yet), the Dorade, the Binker (single masted yacht) and, of course, Ingomar. Other photos will featureas the Lennox, a 17th Century Restoration Warship, built to plans by Richard Endsor. All models are fully scratch built, individually planked, with fully detailed interiors.

Incidentally, I've posted more photos of Binker, Pandora and Lennox in the Gallery section.

Dave - Do you have any more photos of the Connie in the watch case? Is it the same that's featured on one of his webshot photos? If so, gotta admit, it's pretty darn nice!

Happy modelling, everyone!

Hi mMichael Mott, Archjofo,mQwerty2008 and everyone else. Thanks for your Likes.

Here are the latest photos. I've made progress with the owner's cabin and the semi-circular settee (blue cushions with simulated padding on the cushions- which didn't quite turn out the way I was hoping). In the main saloon. The owner's cabin now has a hanging closet next to the double berth as well as it's own bathroom and WC. The bathtub and WC will be done next, as well as the other bathrooms and the ladies cabin (aft). Next week, I'll also tackle the galley, crews quartes, etc.

Best regards.

Hi Everyone

Michael Mott, Pete48, Dgbot and JMaitri, etc. Many thanks for your compliments and encouragement. The Ingomar was certainly a beautiful ship in comparison to some of today's modern thoroughbred racing machines (with the exception of examples such as Australia II, which was indeed beautiful). There's just something about the charm, beauty and grace that designers like Hereshoff, Olin Stephens, William Fife, etc were able to build into their designs, that today's naval architects just can't seem to replicate. I guess that's why boats such as the Buzzard Bay yacht and the magnificent cutter that you are building, Michael, hold such fascination for me.

Anyhow, thanks all, and enjoy the rest of your weekends!!

Hi Omega, I agree, The boat designers today are missing that grace and elegance  The Herreshoff Boats have captured my heart since I was a kid . ( and still have )

Hi everyone. Hope you're all doing well. Progress has been slow this past week or so, as I've been off sick with dreaded flu. Tonight is the first chance I've had to work on the Owner's Cabin, which is a relief because I'd missed working on the boat due to the flu.

Anyhow, the following photos show my versions of a writing bureau (with the lid to the bureau folded down, exposing the interior) as well as a full height double cupboard, complete with shelves on one side and a full height hanging compartment on the other side. I've pictured them alongside an Aussie 20 cent coin to show you how tiny it is.

Please don't be put off by the "furriness" of the finish of the wood. They have yet to be sanded and cleaned up. Once done, they'll look a lot cleaner and nicer.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy the rest of your weekends!

All the best.
