Starting to really come together now Dave...and she’s spectacular...will look really good in a nice case somewhere in the house. You mightn’t be game to consider but have you decided whether you will do another boat once this beauty is finished?

Got to negotiate with the Admiral where to display the outcome.

Another Wooden Boat is being considered.

I have one in mind, which from what I have seen to date, has not been built much to detail.

And that is probably because their is not much published detail about her.

Matter of watch this space to keep the Intrigue.

Dave...... you've already got me hooked on your next project 😋 if it's as good as your Endeavour (and I have no doubt it will be) I'm already booked in for a front row seat!

Shipyard Update:

Leech and Buntline Blocks

I have been slowly working on adding the Leech and Buntlines to the yards.

For the Main & Fore TopSail lines.

Somehow I(someone in the shipyard ?) missed adding the Leech line blocks to the TopSail Yard Double Tye Block.

So instu, I drilled(tunneled) through the top of the block, under the ropes to fit the 2 missing blocks.

1570242497_TopSailYardLeechLineBlocksonTye_01.thumb.jpg.555c34fcf568f6e5ca8250fd4d5b6a66.jpg

Above: Red arrow points to the 2 x 3mm blocks added to each Tye Block(Fore & Main Topsail Yard)

At the same time I found I'd missed the a 4mm double block(Red Arrow) under the Topmast Trestle which picks up the Leech & Buntline ropes from below.

665156612_TopSail_LeechBuntlineBlock_01.thumb.jpg.edee56cea930f53e3d9b0c024b79a20d.jpg

There is 1 per side under the Trestle.

To add the above, I moved the Lift Block(white arrow) back behind the middle arm. The new run of the Lift rope is actually better.

Getting very tight up under the Trestle.

Really nice detailed work Dave, just had a quick look into your log and I will definitely keep visiting again into more detail.  Although I am building a different ship, the HMS Victory, I find your log very informative and can steal some of your ideas for my build.  Thanks for sharing your impressive work with very good images.

Shipyard Update:

I am still alive.

I have what some say, been on "Shore Leave".

Our eldest son got married in late Sept, followed by a 2 week holiday.

Then short stint back home, catching up on the home side of things, and some work.

Then away again for my sister's 60th for a week in early Nov'.

Then back home, where a whole lot of work and jobs to catch up on.

So today I planned to get back into it. However a lot of dust in the air, so don't want to unwrap the boat and get dust over it.

Then I realised, I need to work out where I am at anyhow.

So this log (thank god for the build log) helped out in that regard.

Thank you all for the recent look in's, comments and kind words. Much appreciated.

I hope to shortly bring more pictures of the final end to my build.

Still lots to do though.

And Christmas is nearly upon us. !!🎅

Shipyard Update:

Mizzen Topsail Clew and Sheets

A small step to get back into things for the shipyard.

Took me a while to work out where I was at with the Rigging - after 2months away from the Yard.

One rigging item I noticed was the Mizzen Topsail Clews and Sheets needed doing.

So there is a set either side of the Mizzen for the Topsail Clew(bottom corner of the sail) to attach to, allowing the sail to be furled up(Clew) and pulled down(Sheet). Well I am nearly 99% that is how it works.

Below is the Port side setup, notation in the picture folks. Top Yard being the Topsail Yard, lower the Crossjack Yard.

6220133_Mizz_TopSail_ClewLine01.thumb.jpg.9fc2294507254d812da3fb8ad4450356.jpg

A close up at the end of the Crossjack Yard.

Mizz_TopSail_ClewLine_02.thumb.png.3986e91caa0acab5b390a823895bcd71.png

The Clew after coming down from the Topsail Yard - position "98" as per Mr Marquardt AoTS. page 120/121.

68190559_Mizz_TopSail_ClewLine_cleat01.thumb.jpg.97e44d34cf3350077c4d3ec43a706ab0.jpg

And below the bottom of the mizzen, Sheet tied to a cleat. Position "102" as per Mr Marquardt AoTS. page 120/121.

978365683_Mizz_TopSail_Sheet01.thumb.jpg.1523b0dba9727257e1dafbbc7ef51419.jpg

And now I notice I have not left much length in the tail ends of the ropes to roll up.

Looks good Dave.  The short tails aren't a problem.  Simply tie off at the belaying point, make up some coils off the ship, then attach over the belaying point - only a close inspection with a magnifying glass or microscope would pick up the difference?

cheers

Dave,

I attached my shroud cleats as shown on the plans and they ended up below the rail. I didn't think much about it until I started belaying lines to them and they were out of reach for the sailors. Your shroud cleats look great. Keep up the beautiful work. I'm anxious to see you model finished.

Shipyard Update:

The ongoing rolling up of the Rope Ends.

This task(s) is taking some time to get through.

Below the Stb. Fore Mast area.  12 rope ends alone in this area.

Fore_RopeEnds_003.thumb.jpg.76feb42562828f145ed7ee9e25e784c4.jpg

Below the Port ForeMast Shrouds area.

ForePort_RopeEnds_004.thumb.jpg.b6f6c9f765eb0109519145ee52ef0443.jpg

Stb. ForeMast Shrouds. I use several ways to tie the rope ends into a loop. This way using a cranked set of tweezers, holds the rope loop(coated in 50/50 pva/water) whilst it dries to form the oval loop shape. After I tie it up onto the shroud, ratlines.

ForeStb_RopeEnds_005.thumb.jpg.8fc773168e1a47c44e0261f5ecbc0280.jpg

Many more to move onto.

Shipyard Update:

I've ordered an Acrylic Display Case from a Plastics Company in Brisbane for the baby to reside under soon.

A base needs to be made for the case to slot into and the cradle needs some touching up for the display.

I'll post a picture when the case arrives in the shipyard.

May be slow progress Dave, but she is looking great.  Those rope ends look all nice and ship-shape!

I made life a little easier with my display base by using two thinner pieces of wood with the first (lower) being the larger (overall) size, then placing a second cut to the inner dimensions of the acrylic on top.  No need for slots etc :)

cheers

Shipyard Update:

Slowly been working away tidying up the loose rope ends, esp. the ones the deck.

Main and Fore Course Sheets

As a distraction, started on the Sheets and Tacks to the lower sails. Added them in loose to see how they run.

Since I am not adding sails, will still show the sheets, tacks in place hoisted up with the the Clew Garnets.

A couple of starter pics, details of the sheet ends and blocks(to EyeBolt, Bumkin, Main Corse Sheet return block):

Hi Pat, Slowly getting there.

Shipyard Update:

I moved onto the Anchor Buoys.

First up what it should look like and what to make it/them(2 off) from.

Below pic from the AoTS.

433417990_AnchorBuoy_03.thumb.JPG.4051d217db3d6678c7a666f7200b9d73.JPG

I turned up a 13mm long inner "cork" buoy, from a off-cut of dowel, then lightly stained it.

354801090_AnchorBuoy_01.thumb.JPG.874466e03838cb6bfefda6b8af85a20a.JPG

Made hoops from 0.45mm dia rope(at 1:60 = 27mm dia full size) for top and bottom(to go tightly round the buoy, just on either side of its widest part).

Slings from 4 pieces of rope cut and an eye spliced into the middle.

Left Pic:  With some clips and hooks, I managed to create a stable means to attach the sling to the top and tuck under the hoop.

Right Pic:  Then invert and same as above.

First attempt: finished Anchor Buoy. In hindsight, maybe should of used a rope 1 size smaller.

Shipyard Update

Bow area: Bollards & Cleats for tying off.

For a while I've not been happy with the number of rope ends, requiring tie points, just not enough.

The NMM Endeavour Replica has this area on the Bow - Pic below, where 2 bollards and belay pins are located.

I missed this on the early stages of the build, but makes sense for the multitude of ropes coming back from the bowsprit and yards, never ending.

The AoTS does not indicate(that I have seen) any bollard or cleats in this "zone", but sure would come in handy.

DSC_0111.JPG.32992e1248e89fa6aa1a78c01ae42f5b.JPG

Bit late in the build to be adding in 2 bollards and belay pins, both sides of Bowsprit. Busy little area now and very tight.

So I decided I could at least add 2 additional Bollards(below) to slip in behind bow and beside the Bowsprit.

Bollard_6660.thumb.JPG.a384fcd13b6b6ef6a2044356689b0630.JPG

Extra Starboard Bollard(not painted yet) - clamp holding whilst glue drying.

Another added to the Port side as well.

Bollard_6661.thumb.JPG.34da699448344b86ace8532cb4a0a1c2.JPG

Next, all going well to add the Anchors to the Bow area.

Dave, I think AOTS had cleats on the inboard part of the bowsprit instead of belaying pins?  Nice job on the additions.

Jeer Blocks for the 3 Masts:

I had a look at the Endeavour Fore and Main Mast Jeers single blocks. Each has 3 single blocks. The AoTS p103 indicates doubles on the yard and mast.

Endeavour_MainMast_Jeers.thumb.jpg.f4b51125bef040987c3176bb493bb7ca.jpg

The Endeavour Mizzen just 1 single on the yard, stropped around the mast. And the AoTS p105 indicates similar. But how it was raised ? does not indicate.

Endeavour_MizzMast_Jeers.thumb.jpg.21674c1f91179b958c28e64f5fe07d13.jpg

Therefore I am using the following:

Added in the Jeer Blocks to raise the Yards up to each of the 3 Masts.

Fore Mast:  7mm double blocks either side, with lashing to the mast and the block double stropped.

The Yard will have 2 single 7mm.

594fb6cd8ed8a_JeerBlock_Fore_0002.thumb.jpg.1163b93ca2e5d562b697aa42290cefb7.jpg

Maine Mast(same as Fore):  7mm double blocks either side, with lashing to the mast and the block double stropped.

The Yard will have 2 single 7mm.

594fb6d2bd8e9_JeerBlock_Main_0001.thumb.jpg.44f68101bac483e223cd90c605e42656.jpg

The Mizzen Mast:  For this block I deviated from the AoTS and Endeavour, to have blocks either side, so the mizzen yard can be raised by these.

Note: The mizzen topmast topsail yard has single blocks either side of the mast and a double on the yard. Page 104 AoTS.

I used a 6mm single block either side. The Yard to have 1 x double 6mm.

594fb6d6f2dd2_JeerBlock_MizzStbd_0004.thumb.jpg.a20fd402bdca19f6e430e917b4105aa2.jpg      594fb6db62d12_JeerBlock_MizzPort_0003.thumb.jpg.e6ea20ce55a3add92255ae95870bdaf6.jpg

Might have a look at the crowsfeet and Main Stay Tackle next/soon ?

Dave R

Dave I was researching the blocks under the fore and main caps and found your log to be a great help especially the photos of the replica's tops. Then I noticed how you have the stays over the heads so after some more research found a clear picture of HMS Victory which has it the same with the jeer pendants running down between the mast and stay, so I've corrected my stays to match.

Thanks for a great log, Cheers dashi

Dashi,

I definitely have been at the high end of the learning curve for this build.

My build probably comes out as a bit of this and a bit of that, between AoTS, the Replica, David Steel's, Shardlow, Parkin and a few other books on rigging etc.

If I got something right, it made sense to me to do it that way.?

Shipyard Update:

The days then weeks seem to go by without knowing these past 12 days.

The shipyard has spent many hours tidying up the halyards, sheets, many other rope ends on the deck and shrouds. I can now see the sides of the hull again, party time eh !!.

The Anchors are taking their place on the P&S Bows.

1629212374_PortAnchors.thumb.jpg.4536c954a9fd0b2beab64154be5a1d66.jpg

Below a closer view of the Port Anchors(Sheet and Kedge).

I have the Sheet Anchor tied up in place with chain.

The Kedge Anchor:

- tied to the Fore Port Channel.

- I need to source more chain for the smaller Kedge Anchor, to wrap around the shank, Arm end and tie off to the bollards.

- The Port Anchor Buoy is attached to the front Fore Shroud, with buoy-rope below coiled and attached the Sheet Anchor.

The Starboard of Bow(not shown here) has a Sheet(hanging down) and Stream Anchor up on the Channel. Working on that side now

1739597893_PortAnchors_001.thumb.jpg.19d0f901e0697db9a5959b1422ba6392.jpg

Below the Port Main and Mizzen Shrouds, Channel and deck area.

All the current ropes, ends coiled all tied in place.

1965890185_PortMainChannelsFinished.thumb.jpg.57e6b0506b80b00e16a305b9d360476b.jpg

Much more to go, but getting there.

P.S. I took delivery of the Display Case(top cover), Acrylic Box 900L x 350W x 750H. Still wrapped up in bubble wrap. Another job to get the base made.

Looking very good Dave, some significant progress even if not readily visible.

Mate one small thing to check if it can still be done is the lead of some of that running rigging coming from the bow where it passes over rather than under the other lines; this would cause a lot of 'chafe' on those lines  - more likely that running end passed under the other lines/

Back in the Shipyard

Not much has ben happening of late on the actual Boat.

I finally sourced more small link chain today to finish off the Anchors on either side of the Bow.

However the Display Case is taking shape.

A good mate of mine(you need a good mate like this) started on the base for the Display Case.

Below are some pictures of the base under construction.

Display_003.thumb.JPG.4bb9032bb5cbac7535ceb4ec9de623ab.JPG

Above: The base is made of several pieces of timbers.

The large middle piece is 1 solid piece of 32mm thick, raised up 3mm to an outer rectangular piece to make up the inner width of the case.

A 20mm deep "slot" has been routed on the outer edge for the case to sit over.

Below the case is in the slot.

Display_002.thumb.JPG.700c55e1f9598d0177cbccac9ed960c3.JPG

Above: An outer stepped section(2 pieces glued together) will be glued in the position shown around the base, to cover the slot, base and bottom of the Acrylic Case.

But not before the next step below is done.

Display_004_bolt.thumb.JPG.c090c952af68d8ca1345aa04c886f690.JPG

Above: We wanted the Case to be held in position to stop it being lifted up.

The above sketch shows 1 of 4 bolts which run in a tapped epoxy plug, for the bolt to turn in.

Each is accessible from underneath the base in a slot cut into the side of the main block of timber.

When all assembled, no-one will be the wiser to all the work that went into the base(by my good mate Rhys)

Smick eh!
