Thanks Michael, Sjors and Kevin.

As for your comment Sjors.

I think it is great to start this hobby with a kit as all the needed fittings and materials are included in the kit.

It is just a matter of copying the stuff (and a bit of modifying) if I don’t like the supplied versions or when it is completely out of scale..

And I know there’s always a “backup” (the kit’s version) if the “modification” doesn’t work out or is too difficult to copy.  ;)

Continuing:

I worked this weekend on the other lanterns.

After having found out how to make the first one where the remaining 2 rather quick to make.

In parallel I installed the "emergency steering" chains.

  • 2 weeks later...

At last… some “quality time” to spend on the ST.

The next stage will be the ships boats.

After going through the instructions and the parts included, I realized that my ambitions for this build are now at a much higher level than the manufacturer "OcCre".

So I decided to use some of the parts, but only for creating a template.

The very first thing I “modified” was the keel and the stern.

I cut out 25 pcs of 2mm gaps for the bulk heads.

post-679-0-08512400-1411835219_thumb.jpg

And assembled (according to the instructions) the false keel & bulkheads on the provided “stand”.

I filled up the gaps in between the bulkheads with “balsa wood” and sanded the whole thing into shape and covered it with clear tape to prevent any glue sticking to the template.

post-679-0-74248800-1411835220_thumb.jpg

As for the bulkheads..

My intentions where to use 2x2mm mahogany strips and "bend" these completly around the template using water/steam.

But I really had problems during this shaping process, they just snapped no matter what and how carefully I tried..

I had to give up this idea and ended up in trying out all the different sorts of wood I had available.

I found out that “oak” seems to be the perfect "bending wood", this wood (2x1,3mm) I could bend in almost every shape I needed without snapping.

post-679-0-74341800-1411835221_thumb.jpg

I started out with using clamps (and wood strips) to keep everything in place during the drying process of the bulkheads.

I found it a very frustrating and clumsy experience..

post-679-0-91318300-1411835223_thumb.jpg

First during the planking phase I realized that I could have used “needles” to fix everything in place by pushing them completely into the soft balsawood.

.. lesson learned..

post-679-0-32387900-1411835225_thumb.jpg

I’m still busy with planking the ships boat with (1x2,3mm) mahogany strips, and hopefully I can show the end result soon..

.. Not really "as soon" as i hoped, but  ..

Today I completed planking of the ships boat.

post-679-0-87021400-1413119881_thumb.jpg

The next challenge: Removing the template without destroying the boat.

After having removed the needles from the keel it turned out that the boat (even after having used tape) was glued/stuck to the template.

So instead of using “too much” force, I removed the template gently in small chunks with a pair of pliers.

post-679-0-61455300-1413119883_thumb.jpg

Here’s the result right after removing the template/tape.

And here after having roughly removed all unnecessary wood.

Hi Theo,

It came out very well.  I really like the combination of oak and mahogany.  Nice job.

Thank you Jack!
Agree, not only oak seems to be flexible it also adds a nice contrast to it.
..Even though it is “grainy”, it’s not the last time I have used oak..

and thank you Sjors!,
"No" to your question, the ST kit includes material for 2 different sized ship boats.

The one I’m modifying now is the “big one”, and if it turns out well I'll have to build the other one in the same style.

To be honest, It's a bit more time consuming than anticipated.

..An minor update..

And so far no problems.

I'll sanded the hull, added a rubbing strake, waxed it on the outside and it's ready for the next step.

I have made up my mind for the details/fittings..

I found a drawing on the internet which i (more or less) will use as a guideline..

post-679-0-35164500-1413748527_thumb.jpg

I prepared paper templates for the floorboards and made sure they fit.

post-679-0-29145500-1413748517_thumb.jpg

To secure the laths, I used a sheet of transparent foil with double sided tape and placed it over the templates.

Those look fantastic.

How do you go about trimming/adjusting the completed floor board  assemblies?  Do you use a saw or knife or what?  Seems like it would be very easy to trash the entire assembly doing the trimming.

Thank you for your comment Brian !, they are as always appreciated  :)

For the final trimming of the floor boards I used a sharp scalpel with blade No.10

post-679-0-70780200-1413784701_thumb.jpg

When gently “wiggling” with the blade on the wood and using the marked area of the blade it will (eventually) cut straight through.

Thanks Laurence for your visit and your kind words, very appreciated and motivating..

Next fase..

With the cannon carriages and hatches in my head I re-developed the “sandwich veneer” technique I used.

post-679-0-34036800-1413881978_thumb.jpg

But instead of using thin cardboard I used thin stripes (0,6 + 1,0mm)  veneer and sandwiched/glued these into a lath.

post-679-0-15563200-1413881979_thumb.jpg

Also embedded/added a stripe of veneer into the stern sheet.

post-679-0-30428200-1413881981_thumb.jpg

I dry-fitted the components in the next picture, to verify positions and scale.

..but i think it looks promising.. :)

Thank you Brian, and others for visiting and all the likes..

Unfortunately mainly because of other duties at home & work the build is/will be pretty slow for some time to come..

Here's what i did so far..

The stern bench is now fixed in place.

post-679-0-76442000-1414149657_thumb.jpg

I made brass mast clamps and fixed them on the thwarts.

post-679-0-45993000-1414149659_thumb.jpg

Added mast steps (1) and added decking (2) and a breasthook (3) and started working on the windlass mount (4).

I found a few hours of spare time and managed to complete most of the details..

The windlass and knees are now installed..

post-679-0-10850500-1414938975_thumb.jpg

I also installed an (removable) davit with davit supports, which is used in combination with the windlass, and installed the rudder with a removable tiller.

   Theo,

Your ship's boat is SO beyond comparison. What a work of art in and of itself. A pleasure for the eyes certainly....

..As I had expected..,

at last, I'm finally able to present an update.

The ST kit includes 2 ship boats, so I continued with building the second one.

The build method I used for the second one is pretty much the same as i used for the first one.

Mainly because of the experiences/practice I had with building the first ships boat, this one was pretty straight forward and without too many problems.

I decided to post a photo sequence of the progress so far, the pictures should speak for themselves..

So this is "status quo" after removing the template.

this time I could remove the body without destroying the template.

You also might notice that this boat is a bit different in shape, therefore I’m planning to add some other details to it.

Wow Theo,

That's a little tutorial of his own.

Or you can say a build of his own.

On picture 6 I see that you bend all that wood at once ???

And every thing stay in one piece ?

Hej Sjors,

Yes you are right,

Obviously the power of “oak wood” ..

I just soaked the wood in cold water and after this I’m able to bend all of them at once without breaking.

This oak wood (0,7mm finer) is the most flexible wood I have used so far.
