HMS Supply II by cpt. Tom - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - my first wooden ship - based on HMS Supply

Recommended Posts

Hello Folks,

I want to show you my first wooden ship based on HMS Supply - First Fleet. Why "based", I compared some model kit and the instructions and came to the judgment that no one knows how the supply looks right.

Any Company made there own creation....!!!

Here are some information from wikipedia.

"HMS Supply was a small ship, an armed tender which sailed with the First Fleet. She was intended to be a support ship for HMS Sirius (1786). The First Fleet carried the convicts and soldiers to Australia to start a penal colony. The ships left England in May 1787 and arrived in Australia in January 1788. This was the start of European settlement of Australia. Supply was commanded by Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball.

Supply was a brig rigged sloop of 170 tons. A sloop is a small ship with a single gun deck. A brig rig means the ship had two masts and carried square sails. She had eight small three pounder guns and carried 50 men. She was the smallest ship in the fleet, and the fastest. She was 70 ft (21 m) long and 26 ft (8 m) wide.

The Royal Navy had difficulty in finding a suitable ship. Several were checked but were not seen as suitable for the long journey to Australia. A French storeship, the Eclipse had been damaged when it ran ashore; and an American ship, the Rattlesnake was not of suitable quality. The Navy purchased the British made Grantham, a packet boat, used for the quick transport of mail. When it was partly taken apart for repairs, the Navy decided it needed so much work, that it would cost too much to repair or rebuild it. They then selected the HM Supply, a small Royal Navy ship based in Portsmouth, which was used to move naval stores around to the different naval yards.

After the setting up of the penal colony at Port Jackson, HMS Supply made ten trips to Norfolk Island. When HMS Sirius was wrecked in 1790, the Supply was the new settlement's only ship. In April 1790 she made a trip to Batavia to get more food. She left for England in November 1791 and reached Plymouth on April 21 1792. She was sold at auction in July 1792. Renamed the Thomas and Nancy she carried coal on the Thames until 1806."

This is my first wooden ship and I´ve made many errors and this is the next reason why I want to rename it.....!!!

I started this ship in June 2012, nearly one year ago, as a birthday present to my brother in law...I have not managed to get the ship ready until february this year but I'm in the last steps........!! Sorry DanVad

Here are the first pictures, beginning June 2012:

Tom,

We do actually know a little of what the Supply looked like.

Have a look at this painting by George Raper, a Midshipman on the Sirius.  It's on the Natural History Museum site.

Hello John,

before I started with the supply I search in the Internet and found some paintings of their and the link you gave me was the first one. You see only the shape from the supply, the two masts and a little bit from the rigging

I'll show you a few examples.....The supply from dfell (Caldercraft) and then my supply from Artesania Latina, it shows you a many differences between these two kits. I dont know what is the right ones, I think the kit from Caldercraft is better than mine from AL. That is the reason why I wrote "HMS Supply II"

Here are the pictures:

In the kit from caldercraft were six guns and I only have four etc. etc.

So it is not easy for a beginner to do the right things

Tom (capt) - Am flattered you have used my pictures as an illustration to the different styles from kits but to be clear on mine the rear windows were scratch built and not from the kit. I have understood that windows were fitted at a later stage when the ship had a refit due to its  major trip to Australia. I have some printed copy plans (dated Dec 1779) from Maritime Museum, Greenwich which show the windows. Wish I had seen the plans before making the windows as on the plans the tops of the windows are curved. Will try and photogragh the two plans I have.

Regards

Doug

Hi Tom,

I think the kit from Caldercraft is better than mine from AL.

Oh yeah, it sure is - but even the Caldercraft kit is wrong if you take a look at a few more of George Raper's "real life" paintings. Here's one showing the stern (Supply is on the left) which clearly shows she had Stern Lights (windows) :

Supply - stern detail.jpg

And some larger pictures of the one Jim Lad posted earlier. Note the three semi-circular gunports in the waist (same as Caldercraft's kit) :

Neither kit has the extended quarterdeck/bulwark shown in this enlargement :

Finally, a pic of the stern on my interpretation of Supply :

Thank you Danny,

my biggest error was to be trusted in that kit. Im far way from the supply and the only thing I could change is the sternpart with the Windows. It is a shame from that company to sell that kit with this amount off errors......!!

Anyway, Im building her finished and with my next ship I look more precisely to it.

Thank you for your help

With best regards

Tom

Capt Tom - Sorry for delay but here is a print of the window design from plans dated 22 Dec 1797 post-673-0-22146300-1372078504_thumb.jpgpost-673-0-15068500-1372078536_thumb.jpg.

here is a print of the window design from plans dated 22 Dec 1797

Are you sure about the date Doug? Supply was refitted in 1786 prior to departure with the First Fleet in 1787. Perhaps a later re-drawing of the original plan?

BTW - I wish I'd seen a copy of that plan before I built my Supply. I made a few errors with mine apparently  :(

Accurate, or not, you're doing a good job of building her :)

Although I would avoid "scratching" the windows (Building them from scratch... well that's a different story) :P;)

Danny... I guess you now have the chance to start all over from the beginning..... :)

Dan - you made me look more closely at the two prints, bought from the Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, which came under the heading Brig Supply. I realize now that it should of read supply / transport brig (typical brig design for that period) and not the Brig Supply. The other print is dated 11 July 1759.

Anyway they are nice prints to have and will attempt to photogragh them and put them on my build site and stop hijacking capt.Tom's.

Sorry capt.Tom for misleading you but at least it will give you an idea as what the window design may have been.
