nice work on the ship's parts Mark it's really going to make future projects much easier.

Cripes, with that machine, you could turn out barrel staves and start your own coopering works (in 1/16 scale, maybe)
Seriously, Mark, those parts look great. Were those drawn in CorelDraw or some other drafting program? I'm debating what program to pursue for drawing up parts.

Mark,
Don't forget the parts to make up the gratings, and a tool chest. Plus, if Buck's and Matt's work is any guide, you'll also be needing pieces for a compass, lantern and various barrels.

Mark I'm sure you'll be able to turn scrap into art with the baby you have now The parts look great

Nice sharp cutting .. I couldn't do those parts on a scrollsaw either, at least not in those sizes ... fortunately I don't need to Those laseercutters are still quite expensive at this side of the pond ... same goes for the Byrnes machines ... sigh

Thanks guys.
There's been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to get it to do this along with some extra cash to upgrade a couple of bits.
I've not seen the magazine Jeff. The tech is maturing and the price points on a lot of machines are rapidly changing to meet marketing conditions as the market settles in. There's at least one company is (from what I'm reading in other forums) in dire straights for bad reviews, horrible service and ignoring customers (not MM, by the way). Unless there's a pressing need, I'd hold off for another 6 months. For example, the $3000+ machine (50W laser) that I was interested in but not quite affordable is now down to $2000. I still wouldn't have room for it as its a good 18" longer than one I have...... <sigh><need a bigger workshop>

Hey all, did you see the article in the latest Ship's in Scale magazine on the LaserKnife by Griffith Henson?
I may end up with another "tool" in my shipyard.

It looks like after getting the bugs worked out on that machine, it's taking quite a bit of the "fiddly" out of those tiny little bits Mark. Glad you've got it tuned up and tweaked, so it works well for you.

Hi Mark,
Just beautiful. Really looking forward to seeing these pieces come together into a longboat. Some of them look like they are only a few mm long!
All your hard work and persistence seems to have turned the tools potential into reality! Congrats!
Cheers,
Nigel.

That's seriously impressive Mark, certainly takes scratching up a level.
Now you've worked out the bugs the world is your oyster, very well done mate.

A side update... I'm doing the drawings for the ship's boats and I'll be putting one together while waiting for glue to dry on the main hull. So as not to "interrupt the flow of things", I'll either make them a separate log like Danny did for his, or just hold off until the planking is done. Here's a bit of where I am on these.
The longboat drawings are done but still need some tweaking. Seems that I didn't always account for kerf which I finally managed to get down to 0.015" (0.381mm). And man, these things are tiny. Might just be the end of me....
Here's two pics of the parts being cut, which is something I couldn't do on a scrollsaw to save my soul. I tried and failed several times.
And here's the resulting parts.... the keel is 5" or 125mm long. The keel and assorted structural members are 1/16" (1.5mm) thick cherry. The frames (which look like bulkheads are 1/32" (0.79mm)) cherry and the other parts (knees, seats, thwarts on the upper left and upper right) are 1/32" from scrap holly but I'll have to redo them in boxwood as soon I as get some milled down. I'm planning on using Chuck's method but gluing the bulkheads upside down into a basswood jig for handling and planking.
There (hopefully) will be two more boats. A barge and cutter and all will be nested into the longboat.

Uh.. Tom... I was wrong. They will have to be spiled... And I'll be needing stealers. I'm on my 3rd iteration of planks on this round... I'm hoping..... but alcohol and sanding sticks are at the ready.

Nice work all around.
Yup --- everything is connected and dependent on prior work. Pays to keep your mind way ahead of what you're currently doing.

There are some amazing plastic kits out there and with the aftermarket parts I'd say they could challenge wooden kits.

Nice work - I didn`t realize there was a joint there. Looks like awfully fiddly work. I probably would taken the easy way out & just scribed the joint into the dowel.

Hi all,
I finished chapter 9 last night.
First putting in the fenders and painting the bottom step of the ladder and the top of the fenders. Also took the opportunity to touch up dents and scratches.
added the sheaves:
I added the channels using pins for support:
Then attached channels and them painted black
I did not fully paint the edge with the cutouts wanting to leave bare wood for adding other components.
Here is a shot of the sheaves near the stern. After seeing some of the other modular sheaves I wanted to try the same but I had not cut out places for them. I tried making a simulated sheave out of thinned wood but it did not seem right so I decided I had missed that opportunity early on. I had some brass paint from a hobby store and tried it as an accent to represent the brass... not sure if I will keep it or paint over it.
The work done in chapter nine really showed the impact of inexperience during the initial parts, building the bulwarks, gun ports, etc. Luckily it does not seem to have hurt anything but I will not know for sure until further in the build. I am learning how the parts are all interconnected in some way and there can be a domino effect for earlier lack of skill / dexterity.
I look forward to beginning chapter 10.

GLakie reacted to Dan Vadas in HMS Vulture 1776 by Dan Vadas - FINISHED - 1:48 scale - 16-gun Swan-class sloop from TFFM plans
Thank you Greg and John.
Quite correct Greg - there is only the one Fish Davit (at least on smaller ships such as Vulture), which is used on the side of the ship that is raising the anchor. When not in use it is stowed away, probably with the spare spars in the waist.

Great attention to detail Michael!! Reminiscent of the joint on a cricket bat handle.

Hi Mates,
Moving onto the bowsprit mast, first update.
Thought that I would try to seam together two mast pieces as was done on the 1:1.
Pics are self explanatory but some thoughts;
• Pic 5, 6. Drilled holes so that when I sawed both inside cheeks the center-piece would fall out more easily. And so it did sort of.
• Pic 11- are the first two attempts with my first use of Proxxon KS-15 circular saw. (tried to use the scroll saw but broke two blades, after very little progress).
Purchased a second 50mm fine tooth saw for the KS-15 circular saw. I originally tried the 58mm saw that came pre-installed. That was much too ruff (see pic 11 below). The finer saw made much smoother cuts
• Also used the Proxxon DS-115 scroll saw to “clean” the insides a bit better, for that it worked well.
After much filing it seems to look as if the first part might look ok. Though it still needs a bit of work.
I have not quite mentally figured out how to mate/sleeve the long mast
To be continued J
Cheers, and thanks for stopping by.
Michael
