The Big Mo came with a decent plastic name plate, but I can't roll like that, so I ordered a nice brass name plate for such a grand ol gal.

It measures out to about 32" in length, which is a manageable size. Absolutely beautiful kit for sure.

The first model ship that I tried to build was a Bluenose Canadian fishing boat. I got so aggravated with it that I placed it on the driveway and ran over it with my truck, backed up and ran over it again, then gathered up the pieces and threw them in the trash can. It didn't fix anything on the model, but it did wonders for my frustration. My wife asked me in a sarcastic manner "did that make you feel better"? I simply replied "yes it did".

We also didn't know that commercially made gunpowder mixes finely powdered ingredients in a slurry that is milled long enough to intimately incorporate them on a molecular level ... which after drying and granulating produces a powder that will 'flash' - ergo explode - without containment.  The stuff we made dry with mortar and pestle was far less effective ... didn't stop us from experimenting.  The local hobby store sold refills for chem sets, and the most popular ingredients were ... potassium nitrate, surfer and charcoal.

Have you considered resin printed barrels?  I paid $12 for 18 barrels in two sizes of barrels to the 3D printer I found on line where-in I supplied a 3D drawing of the barrel shape that was appropriate for that particular era.  Took a few days but they came through with no problems.

    Happy New Year folks!

Just wanted to take a moment to announce a couple things that are going on at Ages of Sail right now:

Price Drop on Amati Kits and Tools

Free Domestic (USA) Shipping available on orders of $150 or more

The price drop on Amati Kits and Tools amounts to 10%, which is not a sale price, it's new pricing. This is partially due to the easing up of freight costs, and negotiations with Amati.

The Free Domestic Shipping is an option that will appear when you go to check out. It will only appear if you have a qualifying order. And you will only get the free shipping if you actually choose it. There is no guarantee as to which carrier will be used, and some people prefer to choose a specific carrier. But, if you don't need a specific shipping method, we recommend choosing the free option. Most likely, the items will ship via USPS Priority Mail, but not necessarily.

By the way, stay tuned for an announcement on a new Amati kit release, coming out very soon...

Say WHAT? I was just informing the group of an outstanding deal if there were someone dreaming of building a magnificent model in the near future. But a schooling in business practices and how to screw over the IRS is always appreciated.

In January, I'll be starting on a 1/64 scale kit of the 82' POINT class WPB.  This will be part of the Great American Workboats series.  It will have a solid hull just under 16" long and the usual laser, britannia, and probably some resin, maybe some photoetch.  It's still in the formative stages and I haven't decided whether it will be the initial design or a specific boat.  I may also include fittings suitable for a Viet Nam era boat in country.

@mtdoramike, Nothing yet, but I “retired”** back in August, so hopefully I’ll have more time now. I actually logged in to do some research for adding lighting before I get to the point were some areas of the ship will be in accessible.

**Retired = I quit when they wanted us to start coming back into the office post COVID, mostly because they’d transformed the office It what looked like a giant Kindergarten, but also because it looked like my 401k would allow me to.

mtdoramike reacted to rshousha in Jotika Caldercraft new kit the Surprise
Gentlemen, in defence of the company, I buy a lot of kits from Jotika/Caldercraft. They are a great company and their kits are, in my opinion, a great value. It's a small company and can barely keep up with the demand for their current line-up of kits and other products. The weakness of the UK pound is giving them great leverage these days and they are shipping as fast as they can. Compounding the production pressures, issues with Brexit are adding a level of complexity and administrative effort.

All this means they are very busy with the kits they already produce. There is enough variety in their line-up to make most builders happy for several lifetimes and I suspect very few people have built all their kits.

I don't want to start a big discussion on this point. I just think we should encourage our favourite companies in this fragile industry and give them the benefit of the doubt. It is surprising to me to see that, on the one hand we want traditional companies to thrive, and then on the other we make disparaging remarks about those same companies.

If others are developing new kits, that's great news. I just don't see the need to make discouraging remarks about our friends.
