  1. Before I decided to give wooden boats a try, I was deep into 1:35 scale Tamiya armor kits. Mostly WWII British, German and US, tanks and half-tracks. A few modern armor too. Probably 40 plus vehicles, all assembled, painted and now in plastic storage boxes after Admiral made me give up the bookshelves years ago. Still a few in the stash. I know that rabbit hole well, I fell back down it after watching COG and RGL do their 1:350 destroyers.
  2. Denis, @popeye the sailor , does this bad boy count for a build log ? Built in 1906. Been over 2 years in restoration. Had to completely disassemble the backbone and re-glue and install all new screws. Likewise for the basket. Measures 32 feet in length. After 4 months steaming the hide glue, and removing about 200 screws, side planks removed from backbone. Extra blocking added to stiffen backbone Reglued and clamped Runner plank with 2 coats of tung oil, old bolt holes filled with epoxy before redrilling Epoxy in splines to repair checking in mast Main basket (stern) inverted with original planks reinstalled, damaged wood repaired Re-attaching basket to backbone Forward basket, boat has 2, this one amidship
  3. Try some Tung oil on a piece of scrap to see how that looks. We use it on our ice boats a lot.
  4. Oh they can be in the food chain, just not MY food chain You can eat my share if you want !
  5. Gave their all ???? For what ??? Besides I have tried them and decided they are not for me !
  6. Denis, I don't remember cuz I don't eat them. Not even steamed, not even in chowda ! All I remember is the guy who brought them up to us lives on Long Island and is a member of one of the ice boat clubs down there.
  7. Craig, go to YouTube and search on Hudson River ice boats, you will find dozens of videos of our boats. Look for the video with the Brass Band. The photos above are from March 2014, the last time we had foot thick ice on the river and the gathering with the Brass Band. This year 2019-2020 was the year winter never arrived
  8. Lou, be glad it was only 1:35 scale PE and not 1:350 scale ! Lookin good !
  9. Lou, a typical weekend in the Valley in March (well, pre-Climate Change at least) - a gathering of friends on the ice for some culinary delights and a bit of sailing with the fleet. Note the gentleman in shorts in the next photo Fresh blueberry pancakes Long Island Clams - Fresh today
  10. Edward, Mike, Craig, Denis, Lou thanks. Denis, not sure what is next. I have 2 wood small boat kits, another 1:350 scale US Destroyer USS Sherman I think, sitting on the stash pile. Not sure if I want to do wood or plastic. And I still have the full scale 1:1 ice yacht restoration. Lou, do you really think a seasoned ice boater needs to put the top up to go for a ride on a sunny Feb or March day ? Especially after routinely gliding across the frozen ice of the Hudson river at 40 to 50 mph on a brisk sunny day with air temps between 20 and 30 Fahrenheit? You do need to come East and enjoy some real Winters !
  11. Kevin, thanks ! Don't have a biscuit cutter/joiner but I think I can improvise. I certainly have plenty of scrap lumber on hand.
  12. Love it also. Would like to copy it. Could you provide some construction details please. Are the two bases glued together or just placed side by side in use ? What size are the dowels ? Thanks ! Plane is looking great !
  13. Finished Windshield got a little messy - fell out twice on me - used Gator Grip Acrylic glue first time - 2nd time use G-S Hypo Cement - smudged it a bit putting it back in. Otherwise all came out okay - applied two coats of Pledge floor wax over the acrylic paint body before gluing on the chrome fiddly bits. Now to shrink the kids and take a ride in the Countryside
  14. Moving right along - we have some more progress to the model. Note the corrugated Chrome plated dual exhaust pipes. Man were they ever a bugger to get installed. Hood, trunk and side trim are just dry fitted for now. Stay tuned !
  15. Pirates !?!?!?! Here ??!?!?! I thought they had all been banished to that other ocean You know ! The one that shares the same acronym with that Classic American Military dish, "Cream Chipped Beef on Toast" or better known to American GIs as "Sheit on a Shingle"
  16. OC, yes I read about those storms. Europe even gave them names. Hope you were not affected by them.
  17. Oh the big storms keep coming, they just seem to miss my neck of the woods. Must be the mountains deflecting them or something like that; like maybe the weather people cannot calculate wind speed and direction
  18. It was 60 F today. Haven't seen snow since December. You must be reading about Rochester with 80.9 inches for the season. Maybe ! We have seen 10 to 12 inches all season.
  19. Or a bunch of military vets at the local watering hole aka pub
  20. And here I thought I had a contingent of Marines guarding the port ! Guess I should have asked my local Coast Guard unit to provide Port Security while I was out looking for fresh paint
  21. WOW. That was some GPS malfunction - we took quite a detour thru the forests Getting back on track. I primed the black plastic body parts with Tamiya Fine grey primer. Then repainted them in a Dark Chocolate. For the side panels (cast in yellow) I over painted them with a Sand color and for the seats and other interior upholstery I painted them Fawn color. Then started to assemble the pieces. Interestingly the transmission, engine oil pan are chrome plated. I would expect the engine head cover to be chrome but this is a new one for me. Note to Lou: The floor wax has not been applied to the Chocolate Brown fenders yet. That should deepen the color and provide a nice gloss look.
  22. I though pilots had to have 20/20 uncorrected vision to fly ! What happened ? Old age ?
