Jack12477 reacted to michael mott in Bristol Pilot Cutter by michael mott - 1/8 scale - POF
Thanks Pat.
I needed some 1 1/2" mahogany so cut some a tad over thickness then thickness planed it down with a simple jig and a block plane.
by using some 3/16 x 1/8th evergreen strip and placing them in the corners of the jig i can plane either or thickness by flipping them up or flat.
I then cut the strips to width with the table saw.
Next was to lay out the wood over the template to mark the angles and decide on the joints, tenons seemed reasonable.
They were formed with the usual assortment of saws and chisels.
And a test to get a feel for what the new companionway will look like.

Jack12477 reacted to Old Collingwood in HMS Warspite by Old Collingwood - FINISHED - Academy - 1/350 scale - PLASTIC
More progress today - I cut away the pom pom ammo cupboards and various other boxes, these were plasttic cut parts so they needed to be sanded to clean then up and some needed sink marks removing, next job was to fit two pe doors on each pom pom cupboard, then they were painted mid grey, same procedure with the other boxes - these were scattered around the boat deck.
Then it was railings time - the boat deck has three sections of railings and one small area of tarp, I used the pontos diagrams to aid where the railings go and copied them on to some paper, first I cut the two rear sections these went on quite easily, then I had to measure and shape the area that goes around the cranes, this was a bit fiddly due to the delicate nature of the pe, but I managed to sit them in a smear of pva, then when set I applied a small smear of ca to set them fully.
To finnish off the railings at this level I painted them in mid grey, next off will be the tarp in the small mid section between the two pom pom shrouds.
I also stacked up four carly floats and painted them the same as before, these were placed on the crane deck.
Here are a few pics.

CDW, try placing a single layer of Kleenex (brand or any similar brand) tissue over the built-in flash when you take the pictures. If one layer still is too bright then add another layer. The tissue will diffuse the light, make it softer and help keep from "washing out the color" in the extreme close-ups. You'll have to experiment with the number of layers of tissue until you get what you want. It's an old photographers trick.

It's great that your shipyard move is about done. I'm looking forward to seeing some progress and especially your carvings.

Jack12477 reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Thanks for looking in and the likes. Been awhile since I've not been in the shipyard but moving the shipyard. Anyway, move is done, only thing left is the laser cutter to re-calibrate and find all my spacers for setting the focal length of the lens. Going to be a busy rest of the week and then hopefully shop time this weekend or maybe early next week.
Thanks for that reference Patrick. I have that book also. However, at the time of Licorne's capture, she had been rebuilt and no longer looked like she did originally, which was much like La Renommee. At the time of capture she was very similar to Belle Poule in style of the sterm. quarter galleries and bow but with differences. One of the differences is that Licorne, as captured, had the Arms of France. In many ways, her carvings were more like Le Venus (even her masting sizes were comparable).

Jack12477 reacted to Chuck in Medway Longboat 1742 by Chuck - FINISHED - 1/2" scale
There is very little CA seepage on the Longboat. Those photos of the frame removal are of the barge. Since that area was going to be covered by a lot of interior planking it didnt need much cleaning up. The longboat however is a different story. I just sand it off. But in fairness there is very little of it as I knew that there wasnt any interior planking. So I was extremely careful. What little was found is just sanded away. It isnt very thick and doesnt stain the wood at all.

Had a nice visit with Jeff (Chasseur) last evening when he stopped by to see the Albertic.
More reworking of the companionway. I am reworking the area that opens up to the hull. The opportunity to rework the position of the skylight which was a bit too close to the mast will be able to be sorted as well. I am going to widen the companionway to scale 36" (4.5"actual) so that it aligns with the skylight similar to the one on the Polly Agatha. So just to save mahogany I made a prototype out of some cardstock.
I will make a new deck piece by laminating the deck fir planks over the 1/8th aircraft ply sheet once it is properly curved and the cut outs for the companionway and skylights are done.
I actually spent a good part of the day working on upgrading the drawing that I first made when this project began way back in 2012. so a lot of measuring and fixing the drawing which was rudimentary at best.

Probably, but that might be because you suddenly start to say nice things to me ... another option is that I got home frustrated from something called work and smash my laptop on top of her ... not likely, because I tend to throw my electronic mouse against the wall, or smash it on the desk ...

Thank you gents, those are some great comments. However, don't give me to much credit before she's finished, the fat lady might just sit on it instead of sing about it ...
Cheers

Carl, I think you could classify this as a "beater". Nice job with the weathering/rust.

Could do a bit of work today, messed up the deck, so I had to colourise it, now remains some white and black pastels to rub in, and it will blend in nicely with the rest of the deck. Added the ship's boats, the vickers platform, need to add another two carley floats to the stack and tie them down, torpedo tubes fitted, still the search light tower to make ... nearly there with the middle and aft deck ... getting somewhere now ... I see a finish somewhere very distant ...

I am using black-gray for the hull color. I never use straight black. The flash on the camera lightens it up WAY more than it appears in person. This is more how it actually looks:

Jack12477 reacted to Kevin in SD-14 by Kevin - Marcle Models - 1/70 - CARD - cargo ship forward section
Good evening everyone
i have been doing quite a lot on the build over the last few days, and photo progress as i go along, but i dont quite know whats going wrong wrt to the photo quality when i come to do an update, out side has been quite bright with tge nice sunshine we have been having, inside is cool and dingy so the flash jumps in, and i think thats part of the problem, everything is being washed out with the light
anyway
99% of the frame up to the forward line of the cargo hatch, some has be left out so that i can work inside the cargo space
the tween deck was made away from the hull so that i could paint it before fitting
some led lighting has been fitted, as i was to be able to show it on completion
the deck is not fitted yet and needs some more work to allow that, also i am working out how to cut some of it out to display the structure
this is frame 138 with the after part of the wt bulkhead adapted now to hide the led lighting wires
most frames fitted and the tween deck still being worked on
tween deck and bulkhead in place but not fitted still quite a bit to do before that happens
and limited lighting, as i did nit want it looking like a show boat
