Some contemporary models have blue or blue-grey painted 'slates' with white outlined edges. At least one model that I've seen has tiles with a central raised line like the vein on a leaf.

Slate was propably used to cover a qgallery in those days. Here is an old shingle together with the Winnie.
The qgallery of HMS Surprise has a comparable construction. My daughter visited the ship in San Diego in 2017. Here is a picture.
HMS Victory and HMS Trincomalee have both Black roofs over the qgallery.

Boxwood... i am in love!
Its a very hard material and the result is way different than my Tanganyika. My new Proxxon sander really came in handy here. Its a hard mtrl so much more difficult to cut.

I can't believe how fast you are - it'll take me at least 3 months to get as far as you have, and I'm retired! How much does Chris's innovative design help in that regard? Everything certainly seems to fit together really well.
Keep up the good work. I'm really enjoying your log and can't wait to get my Speedy at Christmas.

Wasn’t good enough so re did it. 16 pieces all up as there is one for the barriers and one for the arrestor cables. Fuel next.

So I’ve scratch built from spares an arrestor gear station. I think it’s probably as much as is warranted given it’s not really visible with the naked eye.

USS Kidd-FINISHED Named in honor of Isaac C Kidd, Rear Admiral, USN, who died aboard his flagship, USS Arizona, December 7, 1941.
Started in June, 2019. The hull, deck, and main superstructures are from the Trumpeter kit. The rest is a combination of kit, aftermarket, photoetch, and scratch built details. Main reference is USS Kidd On Deck by
David Doyle. Paint is acrylic. The screws and rudder are removed as the model will be mounted on a seascape which is under construction and encased.

Ryland Craze got a reaction from mtaylor in Constructo Enterprise instuctions/plan
I have a PDF of the instructions. It is two files with a total of 109 pages with many color pictures. This is for the newer Constructo Enterprise kit number 80837. I have uploaded the files below:
ENTERPRISEINSTRUCCIONES-1.pdf
ENTERPRISEINSTRUCCIONES-2.pdf
I hope this helps.

Ryland Craze reacted to Dr PS - Paul Schulze in Guns of HISTORY Civil War Coffee Wagon by Dr PS - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Scale 1:16
Just received the Civil War Limber to add to the Coffee Wagon. This kit should not take very long. First the kit pics -
I first tackled the wheels and ammunition chest. Most of this kit consists of parts made from Britannia metal. As a result of this, I will be using only CA glue.
Below is shown a primed wheel, the primed chest and axel housing with the Pintle Hook attached. Britannia metal needs to be primed before painting.
Next I painted the chest and wheels red with black trim. Normally the limber would be painted army colors but the Coffee Wagon was painted with red color to differentiate it from regular army use.
Above and below are also shown the unpainted carriage and wood pole. I had to carve the pole (tongue) to fit the carriage. Since the supplied wood was square, the pole had to be carved round most of its length.
The rest of the wagon will be black.

Ryland Craze reacted to Blue Pilot in Smuggler 1877 by Blue Pilot - BlueJacket Shipcrafters - 1/4" scale - Gloucester Schooner
I got a little bit done today. my templates are a bit flimsyer then I hoped but they will do the job. The stern is coming in nicely. The bow still has a way to go. I used a carving knife to take off most of the excess wood. Then I switched to a Dremal tool on low speed to get things closer. The basic shape is there I think.

Made a few side projects before continueing with the planking. Everything is precut making it very easy to work.

Ryland Craze reacted to Vane in HMS Speedy by Vane - Vanguard Models - Scale 1:64 - Master Shipwright (limited edition)
First planking done and I have just had the kit abit more than a week. What I like about Speedy is that Chris have made many new design solutions that really make it easier and faster to build. A few observations so far:
1) Pre-made rabbit to support the first planking.
2) Laser cut holes from "the wrong side" so you dont need to measure
3) The precut walls comes in 2 pieces
4) MDF skeleton with many very close bulkheads
5) Only identified weakness so far are these 4 very fragile pieces that easily break during assembly. The would perhaps be made in a different mtrl than MDF?
Now its time to start with the 2nd planking in boxwood. Here he has also clear markings on where the first board should be placed so nothing to measure... 🙂

Ryland Craze reacted to Chuck in HMS Winchelsea - FINISHED - 1764 - by Chuck (1/4" scale)
Hoping to try everything before deciding. Here is the dark roof again but I made it much lighter. I also painted the top blue to match the frieze which is like the minerva model. Now I cant make up my mind. I like them both. I will study these photos and make a decision with your help. Always a lot of fun right....I do appreciate the help and your thoughts on this.

Ryland Craze reacted to amateur in HMS Winchelsea - FINISHED - 1764 - by Chuck (1/4" scale)
Actually, you could argue that the dark version is too dark, and the unpainted too light.
in both contemporeneous models, there is almost no contrast between the painted friese and the shingled roof: there is a colour difference, but not too much difference in heaviness of the colour. You could try a colour that matches the original model slightly more: a bluish grey slate, in stead of the rather stark black.
And, although I will never try a modl like this myself, it is a joy to see how it should be done. I'm a daily visiting, non-posting admirer

Ryland Craze reacted to Beckmann in HMS Winchelsea - FINISHED - 1764 - by Chuck (1/4" scale)
I prefer the dark roof. This is a peace of architecture. The focus is on the columns and the moldings and windows. The upper and lower framing ( roof and frieze) have to be darker in order to make a contrast. Otherwise it might look a bit out of balance in my opinion.

Ryland Craze reacted to Nunnehi (Don) in Medway Longboat 1742 by Nunnehi - FINISHED
An update - have been away for a few weeks, but have made some progress and installed the first three strakes and done a little sanding. Although you can’t really see it, I followed Chucks instructions about lining off the hull and it’s helped.
