I think using the breaking strain of the line as a size measurement can be misleading. It would be better to look for a correct diameter rather than the breaking strain. That way you would also know what size drill to use.
Alternatively, measure the line with a vernier and buy the drill to suit.

Starting with the stem. I just did a quick dry fit and everything fits together almost perfectly. I haven't touched anything yet and just very minor adjustments needed. Doesn't get any better than this. I won't remove any laser char from the surfaces until they are glued together. Don't want to risk rounding over any edges.

Center planking completed. Several logs mentioned how difficult the center planking had been for them. The manual simply states to start in the center and makes no mention of dificulty. During this process my wood bin got its fair share to fend off hunger. I found it necessary to add an additional plank that facilitates a slight notch around the largest hatch. This worked well finishing the planking by making a logical plank length to build off starting the 4 plank shift pattern. The walnut wood is more varied in color than I wished but after scraping at the mast hole the colors were not as varied so i'm hoping that the deck will blend into a more uniform pattern. Tomorrow I'll start the second plank of the 4 plank shift pattern.

    Hi All
    Thanks for the likes
@GrandpaPhil hope you start back on your card version, it's looking good so far
@jpalmer1970 thanks, happy to have you along

Ok, stem part next....this has been broken down into its component parts and glued up

I've milled some cherry to a 6mm thickness for the stem, keel/false keel and stern post pieces and mixed some black acrylic paint into PVA glue for the joints.  Some of the joints are not perfectly tight but I'm fairly happy for a first attempt

All glued to the "keel" piece

I've scored a line along the cherry 1mm in from the "keel" piece (if you zoom in really close you can just see it) , I'll cut this away after the first planking to use as a rabbet for the 2nd planking.  I'm hoping the scoring will help in a smooth removal

The 6mm cherry is centered  on the 3mm "keel" leaving 1.5mm on each side to take the 1st planking which will be.......yeah, you guessed it 1.5mm in thickness.

    Thanks for looking in

    Next,
The further finishing of the cannon deck. And start building the basis for the  waist and the fore castle.

There is also a cabin at the front. The crew of the (optional) cannon has a lot of space again...
The sloping side of the cabin will later serve as a basis for a staircase

I run out of wood supplies. So the men from the sawmill were put to work (me...)
There is material of 3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9mm thickness back in stock.

    Thanks for following

Continued with the planking on the rear castle.
Frames 6, 8 and 10, which served as the basis for the rear castle, were too thick and were therefore made thinner.
I used the easy way, put the saw in and start sawing.

the stern is provided with the necessary holes for the tiller, etc.

The frames were too wide at the top and would cause problems later with the schrouds.
The simple way, tighten with an iron wire.

1.8cm less wide at the top, and "schroud test" ok 👍

The rear castle is now temporaly on hold.
Sanding the clinker planking and the interior is for later (outside the house...)

    Hello,
the carpenters finished the great cabin for the captain. It took some time, because the oil has to dry, some days of because of eastern and the good weather we had. But now it is raining again, so we are busy at the yard.

Here the carpenters have the first bulwark allready finished in the raw.

    Hello everyone:
This seems to be the day to start Speedwell logs.
I received my first 2 chapters about a week ago.  I don't think I will be buildings as fast as some others but I have started and we are off & running.

My only thought so far is when attaching the two curved pieces together make sure they are as exact as possible.  Mine were off a little, and then you have to sand them to get a good fit with the stem assembly.  And trust me - you don't want to sand any mating surfaces you don't have to...

I think I finally got a decent fit.  It took a lot of extra time but worth it. Now a little extra sanding for the figurehead and the fancy piece on the top.  Then it will be time to get the plans out and lay the keel.
I also hope we can start a group build.  It might encourage a few others to join us.
    All for now
    Steve

Great, another Speedwell build for me to enjoy following. My scratch 1:48 scale POB version from David Antscherl's plans started around 5 years ago will hopefully be completed later this year. Another kit success story from Chuck's stable.

I have used black tissue on deck planking with good success.  For other joints such as scarfs an alternative that I have found to work very nicely is to add a drop of black acrylic paint to a puddle of PVA glue, mix and apply.  These joints have held up for many years so I am confident the little bit of paint has not weakened the joint.

The fcastle deck beams were glued into position .  The knees, carlings and ledges for the hatches were added as per the usual.  The knees are laser cut and just need some sanding to get a tight fit against the frames.  The ledges and hatch framing is completed with 1/8 x 1/8 strips.  Cut them to length and follow the framing plan.

To finish off the fcastle for now...the ladder was made for the companionway on the starboard side.   You can just make that out in the photo.   This is as far as I will take the fcastle which matches where I left off on the poop deck.

So this completes chapter six believe it or not.   Chapter seven begins with the few cabins and sail room on the forward lower platform.   More to come on that soon I hope.  But I have to start laser cutting some more chapter sets and making more rope.    Having a real job stinks....what I wouldn give to hit the numbers tonight, LOL.

Started assembling frames next. Some of the lasered identifiers are hard to read for me. Took them off the trees one at a time.  Make SURE you check identifiers and orientation prior to assembly. Check the PLANS, make sure the ARROW in the jig faces forward. I assembled five frames and dry mounted them on the keel. Some are REALLY tight and I was afraid of issues so I sanded the char off. Fit nice after that. The jig is ingenious.

You really, really really need to pay attention to the plans and make sure you are using the correct one. I was moving merrily along with the keel thinking that the steps where all in numerical order. When I got to the stern I noted I was missing some parts whilst having a lot of extra of others, asked Chuck. Man I love Super Glue debonder. Follow the plan and avoid this MISTAKE.

Received a large box containing Speedy about 5 days after placing order. The first thing I always do is inspect parts. Many parts where loose in the box so spent a couple of hours figuring out whence they went and taping them in place.

Just a few pictures of whats in the box. Had a few items shake loose in transport so needed to make sure I got everything back where I belong. I also printed a few parts of the plan as a test.  Was able to get the copies of the plans done too.

    Hi all.

Another Syren Speedwell starting here. I received mine a couple of days ago. I haven't done more than look the wood over, print chapter one of the monograph and order copies of the first three sheets of the plans. The first two sets of parts look fantastic. As you would expect the cutting is first rate and the AYC is so nice.
My first steps will be to read the monograph a couple of time plus review Chuck's and Mike's build's. Also, I'll get the wood for the build board and glue the plans to it. Once I've completed that I'll start in on the stem.

    Let the adventure begin!

Thank you, Allan, the kit didn’t include any standards to support the transom, but I note that Alex M has included five in his drawings of the Anson following conversion to a Razee. He also includes an extended central standard to support an Ensign staff tabernacle.

I did think about following his example but decided that the double arrangement looked more aesthetically pleasing to my eye.
I think the inclusion of such an item is a reasonable assumption to make, and the set up on the Indy kit almost begged the inclusion of the arrangement as I have modelled it.

Couple of days working on the center plankings between the furniture pieces. A lot of measuring, cutting, filing and fitting and making a new one. Slow and methodical work with not much to show for the hours spent.
This is where I stopped today.

The starboard piece laying on the false deck is the next to be notched around the companionway and skylight. Studying the work I've done and how it progresses along with several decks where the bent the planks rather that ribbing them into the waterway I decided to nib them. I feel the bent deck planking makes the deck appear to bulbous and the straight seem to be more common.
