  1. Thanks so much Remco. I can't wait to see your rigging on KF. I'm sure that it will be spectacular. Bob
  2. Thanks so much to all for the very nice comments and the"likes". Very much appreciated. Jimz66, the rigging plans I'm using are in AOTS Essex with rope and block sizes derived from Lees proportional tables. Bob
  3. I've now added the catharpins, futtock shrouds, futtock staves and ratlines on the futtock shrouds. The catharpins are simplified, being hitched to the shrouds rather than seized. I chose to do the ratlines on the futtock shrouds first to get a little practice before tackling the larger areas of the shrouds. It's been about 3 years since I'd done any ratlines and I was a little rusty at first, but it's like riding a bicycle -- you never forget. After the first 5 - 10 knots you fall into the tedious monotony and it goes pretty quickly. I'm now working on the main areas of the ratlines on the lower shrouds. Bob
  4. Nils, I only wish my sketches looked as good as yours. It says a lot about why your modeling is as good as it is. Bob
  5. Thanks so much Dan for the kind words. As to the length overall, I haven't made the jib boom, flying jib boom and spanker boom yet, and have no overall drawing from which to measure, but my best estimate is that the length overall will be about 40". Bob
  6. Thanks so much Janos and Nigel. Janos, all the best in your new business. It should be very successful. Bob
  7. Thanks to all for the many great comments and "likes". Your appreciation of Janos' contribution to my build is exceeded only by my own. Bob
  8. Work on the head and the bowsprit rigging is now complete. Probably the most significant aspect of this work is the figurehead. As those who have followed this log will remember, I had reached a point of desperation at doing it. In a gesture that demonstrates both the wonderful nature of this site and his own incredible generosity, Janos offered to carve the figurehead for me from boxwood. The result is fantastic, and something that I could never hope to duplicate on my own. My gratitude is boundless. I must add that Sam Cassano, despite his illness, sent me a resin cast figurehead that he had done previously. Although it won't appear on the ship, I am thinking of ways to finish and mount it in the finished display case as a tribute to Sam's efforts on this model. After mounting the figurehead, I completed the head by adding the boomkins and the iron railings and stanchions which had previously been made and fitted, but not installed. The railings and stanchions were made from wire. The boomkins were rigged with their shrouds after they were installed. I also added the eyebolts necessary to do rigging in this area. Finally,I did the bobstays and the bowsprit shrouds. Next up will be catharpins, futtock shrouds and (ugh! ) ratlines. Bob
  9. Bill: My most recent communications with Sam were a few months ago. He told me that he had been quite ill and continued to be so. Bob
  10. Frankie: Mark's synopsis is accurate. The slightly longer version is that the kit was issued with plans and parts that were not the final versions that Sam had turned out and used for his prototype. In addition, the plans and parts did not match each other. All in all, a messy situation. As you can see in my log, the framing process required substantial modifications, rework and a fair amount of imagination to fill in the gaps. Bob
  11. Thanks so much Wes and the "likes". Jimz66, I see that ME is again offering the Essex kit, but I have no idea as to what they have done to fix it. Bob
  12. Looks great Rusty. Either way you go, the rest of us will think it's terrific, but you have to be satisfied. Bob
  13. Thanks Augie, Sjors, Nigel, Grant and Joe for the nice comments and the good wishes, and thanks also to the "likes". Bob
  14. First of all, I wish all of you a very happy and healthy New Year. Secondly, thank you for the interest, encouragement and kind thoughts about Essex this past year. Two weeks of family house guests have now left, but as at least some of you expected, I snuck in some modeling time. The pendants, shrouds and stays on the lower fore mast are now done. Everything done the same as on the other masts. Now, on to the bowsprit and further work on the head. Bob
