Here is the topic with the instructions as a download and we can discus any questions you might have and other ideas here.... Remember this isnt your average capstan you get in the typical kit. It has a lot of pieces. If you are building the yellow cedar version....keep your hands clean while building it and cut your fingernails. Lots of small pieces.....take your time. You cant finish it in an hour. This should take you more than day if you are being careful. Maybe longer. Download the instructions for this mini kit here Winnie Capstan Instructions.pdf

No you have to mill your own strips although some of it is supplied with each chapter. I dont use pear. I have a Cedar version with some boxwood pieces just like Cheerful. And I have another choice of everything done in Cherry. But mostly you have to cut your own hull and deck planking strips. Everything else is mostly supplied. Chuck

The cheapest way to go is buy a scroll saw and start cutting. Laser cutters dont work like describe. You would need to scan each board into a computer program and trace every part using a program like Corel Draw. Which is very expensive in its own right. It would take you 100 times the hours to do that in comparison to just buying a good scroll saw. Chuck

Cant wait to see some of these take shape...

Yikes...that looks like an ambitious restoration. It will be interesting to follow you along as you progress. I see some real challenges in those pics to repair.

Nice review and I look forward to your build log for it....maybe a group build if there is enough interest. Hopefully we can get some replies from the members here if they are interested in starting one. We need a new POF Cross section group and a kit is perfect for folks who dont have all the tools to build one from scratch. We need at least six members to start one.... Chuck

If you are going to paint the bottom white...I would highly recommend that you copy the style of the two contemporary models. Make it so that the entire bottom under the wales is painted OR just leave that small area aft as shown below....The two top photos (Amazon) is quite close to how we will fit out the Winnie by the way....as far as deck planking etc. Just beautiful!!!

Thats not my thing at all. Do t care for the way that looks but more power to the folks that want that.

These...but more importantly other features and details that are now trendy to pile into a project. I am taking a step back with this project and using the contemporary examples as my guide. "Less is more".....😁

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
