For the most part....but the bow port is a bit of an optical illusion as it curves.

It varies wildly on contemporary models....some really close to the top edge of the lid while some others are a bit further away. The key is to place them where the lids will open and close in their openings properly. Remember that the lids and port openings are NOT square or at right angles....but the hinges must be squared up to each other to make them work properly. More or less. I tried to place them appropriately on the plans so I would follow that. But one hinge on a lid could be higher than the other one so their tops are level with each other. Its hard to explain....but both hinges need to be level....even though the top of the lids follow the sheer. Because the sides of each port are straight up and down they wouldnt open or close properly unless this was the case. On a model it doesnt have to be so extreme however because you will most likely show them open and they wont be seen....or certainly not opened and closed. They are fixed either open or closed....so you can just make it look good.

Ken I am sad to say has left our forum...he doesnt post here anymore. He prefers to be active on SOS and post over there....as he has been following many logs over there. Ken is someone who never posted on anyones build log but his own on MSW....the kiss of death for getting no activity in their own logs. You guys must remember how often I say that is a big mistake if you want others to show an interest in your build log you must at least make a small attempt to show an interest in logs of others as well. So he has gone to SOS where they are so desperate for members that new folks are love bombed in their logs by the same two or three staff members. I guess that is all it takes. I implore all MSW members to reach outside of their own logs and show some attention to other MSW members if they want some reciprocal attention paid to their own projects. He is very familiar Keith.....it doesnt matter

HMS Winchelsea (1764) 32 gun frigate GROUP PROJECT INFO

I have been asked by a few people this week about the Winnie group project and if it was still open for new members to join. I am not sure how there could have been any confusion about this but YES....the Winnie group is still open and we are actually getting new members all the time. Parts will continue to be available in my Syren store as well. In fact we had quite a run on parts for the early chapters this week from new folks just getting started.... So please do feel free to join in on the fun and you can build it in either Alaskan Yellow Cedar or Cherry.....this group will not be closing anytime soon. At my last count we have about 60 build logs going on here and at least that many more in addition being built by folks who for some reason havent started a build log yet. We will wait for you to catch up....LOL!!! 😀 Chuck -
I believe that everyone who has contacted me about needing rope to finish rigging their current models has bought what they need. Its been a week and nobody else has contacted me..... soooo..... here is the link for that area of my store for anyone to buy what is leftover. As soon as it is all gone.....thats it for Syren rope. So get it while you can. 😀 If you dont see a size listed that is because its all gone already.....and as I deplete other sizes I will remove them from the store permanently. https://syrenshipmodelcompany.com/boxwood-rigging-blocks.php#!/Ship-Model-Rigging-Line/c/6029025

This topic is fine. I have a bunch of resin guns coming for the gundeck. They are indeed 1 15/16” long. I have also started laser cutting the carriages. You will 24 of these. I will sell them 4 to a package like the other cannon and carriages. I will need to make many hundreds of these. So I am waiting until I have a healthy amount before I list them. Building these and writing the instructions are the very next thing I will be doing.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
