HMS Prince of Wales 1/200 card model
Ship Shape replied to Herrjaeger's topic in Card and Paper Models
Card modeling is not for everyone. But if you do get bit by the bug, you are in for a ride. People across the Big Pond from us have a way head start on this form of modeling. But I have seen a steady increase of people interested in this form of modeling and if you look around, I have seen card models that rival other forms of modeling. I started working with card models while stationed in FRG back in the 70's and I have messed with them ever since. I like all forms of and types of card models, but ships are my fav. I will not go into the kits I have, I will say this, I will not get all built until called home in the Bye and Bye. But I am for sure going to give it a go. I have started a thread and will follow along the others who are posting threads for this type of modeling. Rick -
I like what you have done with this kit, I know it took some work to this and I for one will follow this thread to see how she turns out. Rick

Model Shipways Willie L. Bennett Questions
Ship Shape replied to FlounderFillet5's topic in Wood ship model kits
I also have this kit w/paint set. I concur, it is a very well detailed, illustrated set of plans and construction booklet. Study all of them well and follow each step, only proceed when you understand what is being said. This builds into a very impressive vessel that plys the waters of the Chesapeake. There are many versions depending on the region the boats is used, and this kit is exactly as I remember seeing while in Stevensville, MD. Rick -
Cody, so very sorry for not answering back, I have been away for awhile.........for your info, you will see this project start up again very soon. I went thru a move and it has been packed away, but is now out and waiting for me to decide how I want to power this baby up. I will say this, alot of people have asked me my thoughts on this kit as a RC model, I believe with the right set up, power and drive system, you could have a show stopper @ the local pond. Just my 2 cents worth. By the way, Cody are you working on anything RC Boat related. Rick

As you can see, I have already removed the laser cut frame work f/hull from sheets. This kit did not come with the glue the 1st did, however I still have 2 tubes of the glue left that came with the Lugger and I also have discovered what I believe to be one of the best CA glues I have ever used in card modeling from GPM.com......uni-flex klej cyjanoakrylowy.......short f/CA! This stuff is just outstanding, does not soak thru the card and when dry, is even flexible with no after effects, ie: white powder from the CA curing out. I love this stuff and use it in all my modeling now, that a CA is called for or needed. The other glue is a type of contact and stinks to boot, funny, it is used to re-sole boots.....made a funny . So there it is, I have seen this kit done up and it builds into a very detailed rep of the Santa Maria, however, I will build just a tad different than comes in the kit. We will get into that shortly about the research side of the project. So for now, happy modeling, don't glue your fingers to the table and watch the pointy end of the knife. Rick

Well, I'm back, yeppie........and again, I wade into the fray with a build. I was torn about work being done on a plastic kit, or a card kit I started a few months ago. The plastic kit is a very involved project and I just want to build to completion w/in a year if possible. So the card kit won out. And just what kit am I talking about.........a Shipyard 1/72 Santa Maria, all laser cut kit from Poland. For those in tha know, these are as complete a kit for a card model as one is going to find in one box. Comes w/everything one needs to build a truly wonderful vessel. This will be my 2nd time building one of their laser cut box kits, the 1st was a French Lugger and I will admit, I rushed the painting and I really did not care for the look after done. These kits come w/tube water base paint, of which I have since learned, is done in layers to achieve the desired look. I however will not go this route this time, but rather try something new, we will see how it pans out. These kits are not cheap, I believe I paid $140.00 USD f/this one from a dealer here in the US, Paper-Model Store.com, great guy to deal with. I also will use for the corrections the copy of Xavier Pastor's Anatomy of The Ship, The Ships of Christopher Columbus. Yes I know, photos............will come soon. Please feel free to ask or point out as you see the need and we all will learn from this build. Rick

HMS Prince of Wales 1/200 card model
Ship Shape replied to Herrjaeger's topic in Card and Paper Models
Bill, have you thought about a ship model............I have seen some that rival museum repilcas made from card.........there is also a lady from across the Big Pond, her name is Doris, you should see what this artist does in card along with a few other fellas from the same neck of woods. Her Victory, a real piece of art and all hand made from card! Rick -
OK

As has been requested, I will build this in two threads, this thread will center on the application of the RC hardware and mods made to bring up to todays standards for RC, I will also post a thread in the Build logs of the scale aspect of this boat. Rick
-
OK, I did not know if that would be cool since it is a RC, but as you see, it is a impressive to say the least scale boat of what I think is one of the most beautiful produced American vessels to ply the coastal waters of America. I will build her as a vessel from the early 60's. Rick

Ship Shape, Thanks for the encouragement. So far it's been a fun build, even though Im not too far into it! Cheers, Tim You're welcome, here is my version of the PT Boat, albeit RC, is still scale..........yet to be built, this is a promo photo of the kit. My current project is this scale boat @ the moment.......... a Lindberg Connie, 2nd photo.

Got the kit delivered by UPS, wow, this is a cool piece of some of the heavest plastic I have ever seen used for making a ships hull. Almost like fiberglass. Here is a photo of the 76.2 cm/30 inch long hull.

I am currently working on a scale/RC that will pretty much set on a shelf. You can find this build in the wood kit build threads. But I have ordered a kit that I very much intend to put into the brink, and that is the Lindberg Constellation. Ordered the kit from Amazon and will have this coming Wed. I will give a full break down of the kit and post some photos when it comes. I know this is a old re-done kit from Lindberg, but it builds into a very respectful scale vessel w/scale like operation. I have built several Bluejacket kits, and the last, the 4 Piper 310' Destroyer was the last one I did and I know just how much goes into one of these. You are doing a fine job sir and I look forward to more. I now see that they have revamped the Destroyer kit, that was a monster to build........pretty much done me in on solid hull kits. Keep up the precise work, and any parts that you can have cast in resin, I would do all I could, alot easier to work and detail. Rick
-
Am now a fan, your methods are alittle different from what I am used too, but I do like the results, your testing and then test again dry build before gluing is a pretty neat trick, will give this ago. I also like the way you keep coming up w/fix's f/the kits short falls. I also like the doors, small details make or break a great build. One question, please describe in abit more detail this bee's wax finish you are applying to the decks. I like the black card trick, my only problem is I can never find it thin enough to suit me. Look forward to more of your build. Rick

Nice, very nice and I agree, your finished vessel is a perfect ad for this kit. I have one put away for future building. Rick

Impressive is not a good enough word to describe the work you have done. This shows no matter the subject and or scale, any kit has the ability to be modeled to a high standard of detail and scale. I also model in card as well and I never have really thought to do as you have using this medium as part of the process, I have used a strip here and there for bindings, but never as you have. Master piece is the word I am looking for. I look forward to more of this most informative thread of a vessel I have never heard of. Thanks for sharing this, Rick
