  1. Hey Ron What I specifically was thinking about is whether the machine is accurate enough to cut out paper ship model parts? Not to draw paper ship models on my own, but rather to use existing pages of paper ship models and have the machine cut them out? I'm guessing it is not precise enough to do this.
  2. I saw this new tool in the Micro Mark email advertising. Have also seen similar products in the craft store chain, like Michaels. In the Micro Mark description of the tool, it describes the capability of scanning and perhaps digitizing sketches for cutting. It appears the tool can cut all sorts of shapes and in lots of different mediums. I am wondering if there would be any useful application for card ship modeling and cutting out parts. Perhaps the technology is not yet refined enough to be as precise as what is required for ship modeling? I don't know, but would hesitate to spend this much for something that had no practical value. Has anyone had any experience with this type of machine who could comment on it? https://www.micromark.com/Silhouette-CAMEO-3-electronic-cutting-tool
  3. Dan - is laminating the decks a recommended procedure described in the instructions, or is it just best management practice you have learned from experience?
  4. Everything is shaping up beautifully, Cog. Those single AA guns must be a real eye test to build.
  5. When it comes time I actually do start one of my card models, your build logs will help give me much more confidence and hopefully help me better understand what kind of things I need to pay close attention to. Fitting those hull panels, putty and touch-ups. Seems like you have really made quick progress on this model. I would dread to think I had to cut out all the chipboard frames for a model like this. Seems that laser cut frames are the way to go by far.
  6. This is something very pleasing to behold. As you said, with all these oars, "hedgehog" is a perfect way to describe it. Really ingenious how you thought of using the lead foil to simulate leather. It's very convincing, yet simple and uncluttered.
  7. To simulate glass on small portholes, could you use Micro Crystal Clear instead of the mylar? Being water based, maybe it would have undesired consequences on the paper, I don't know.
  8. I think Robin is putting us on about this being his first wooden ship model. If it is his first, man, we are in for some good stuff if he continues to build wooden models. Just kidding with you Robin. I do believe it is your first, but it is so very nice. Great 1st wooden model!
  9. Above is very good advice concerning CA and epoxy fumes.
  10. Where do you buy your Dusek kits, Robin? I've been looking at several different models through the Cornwall shop. Their prices are favorable with the pound - usd conversion right now. Shipping prices very reasonable, too.
  11. I assume that magazines and parts purchased at the news stands or book stores are available on a first come, first served basis. Is that correct? How long from the time of the 1st issue date can one purchase a subscription? From comments I have seen from others on parts works sets, some are searching for back issues they missed and are trying to complete a collection, so it appears there is a limited time frame in which the sets are available.
  12. The model looks big until it's along side of the Yamato. Looks very authentic.
  13. Are you going to build it to fly or for static display? Either way, it should be a lot of fun.
  14. Capt Slog You are being far too hard on yourself with respect to the railing. It looks super nice to the modeler who observes your work (me). But I do understand the tendency to strain at the smallest faults as I often do it to myself as well. It must be a modeler's disease. My older brothers would often ask me if I needed glasses yet while I went into my 40's. It became annoying. Then one day it seemed to happen with a bang, my close-up vision went tango uniform. Distance vision is still perfect, just close-up needs correction.
  15. Interesting. Thanks for sharing that picture for clarity. Do you know...do they just remove the platforms, or the entire strap assembly around the barrel?
  16. Looks great, Greg. What are the pieces you see strapped on the Japanese gun barrels close to the blast bags?
  17. Glad to know you're okay, Robin. Great to see you back again.
  18. Trust me, I will not start this model until I get at least two simpler card models finished and under my belt. I may not find another one of these and don't want to screw it up. I have your tutorial all lined up with my sheets printed out and all supplies, except I am waiting on a precision hole punch tool to arrive from Micro-Mark. That should give me a good start then I'll do something a little more complex before starting the "shiny horse".
  19. I saw an online build review of this 1:200 Scharnhorst kit and had to find one for myself. This fellow is an extraordinary modeler and does great justice to this kit: http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=155972 After I began searching for the kit, I realized it is currently out of print. But I was lucky and found the kit at GPM, along with all the photo etch, metal barrels, props, and anchors. The only thing they didn't have were the laser cut frames. I next ran across a shop named Freetime Hobbies in the Ukraine. They had the laser cut frames for this kit and I ordered them, but have not received them yet to photograph them. After reviewing the kit, I am glad I found the laser cut frames. They are extensive. As you will see in the photographs, the photo etch is extensive with this set!
  20. The 1:200 Scharnhorst items arrived in the mail today. Here are the turned metal barrels that came with my order from GPM.
  21. I'm really impressed with the way your Le Soleil Royal is turning out. It's going to be a stunning display when it's done. Sorry to hear you are not feeling well and hope you snap out of that, soon. Things have been rather hectic with me the past couple of weeks, particularly with the hurricane approaching, preparing, then dealing with the aftermath of it. As a consequence, I've gotten zero model work done. Right now, don't have a whole lot of incentive to get started back. Think I'll just sleep it off and get back to it when I feel like it. Amazing how a big event like a hurricane can make you rethink your priorities.
  22. I wonder what the commercial application is for that elastic thread. If we knew that, it might be more easily obtained than buying it from GPM. GPM's price for it is reasonable enough, but it seems like it takes forever to receive it. Ez line is readily available by mail order in the USA, cost is between 10 and 15 usd for a 100' roll.
