Sorry, did not want to offend the DOG!!!
Why dont you file a bit away from the lower end of the mast to fit it into the hole? If its only the lower hole, noone will see it after.

thanks Gerhard......but Gibbs is a dog       I've run into another uh-oh moment.......with the bow spirit in place,  the fore mast won't fit into it's lower hole.  bother!....I was afraid of that

.......now I'll have to get a saw    since this is an ocean going vessel....should I use a sea saw?

though I'm not quite ready for the rigging yet,  I figured I'd separate the blocks and see what I have.   I used some on the Gundalow,  so I'm hoping they look better on this model too.   better than the rings they supply in the kit.  I still have the revell Cutty Sark instructions......but the United States instructions are right here in the binder I keep at my desk.   on all of the rigging sheets for this series of Revell 1:96 scale kits,  they have a block identification diagram,  since to create some of them,  an eye needs to be cut off.

so,  with them all laid out..this is what I have,

since I have a better selection of the gray ones,  I will be using them.   trying to give you an idea of how big they are,  I could have used a coin.  I used ruler instead.

eye bolts were added to the channels for the back stay rigging.....the starboard side is done.

the mizzen stay rigging will be done as I've seen with other ship rigging logs...there will also be a block assembly associated with them too.  a pair of c blocks {with an eye cut off} are fastened to the deck at the base of the main mast.

for the main stays,  a pair was tied at the base of the fore mast..

as can be seen,  the port side back stay eye bolts are done.   once I've tied blocks to the masts,  they will be cemented in place.  more to come.

I will have to look up your build on the Thermopylae and see what you have done with her. I had not done so as yet because to be honest Clipper ships are not my favorite subject and second you do not provide links to your builds in your signature so I have to take the extra effort to look them up in the search feature of the forum. (I'm lazy) I have now corrected my slothfulness, (Is that a word?) and will be reading your post probably today.

I sincerely apologize Lou........to be honest with you,  my imagination has gotten me into quite a few situations,  that I would have rather avoided!    if I had gone with LED,  my Titanic would probably be better off,  but I don't know enough about it to change it.   I would have liked it bigger too    I'm not much with photo etch either.....all I use is thin brass sheet and rod/wire.  the Thermopylae is the only one I have ever bought a photo etch sheet for.....and with how thick it was,  I wouldn't even classify it as photo etch.   I'm glad you enjoy reading my other logs...feel free to use any idea that I put in them.......especially if will keep you from getting into hot water with your admiral.  I know where your coming from    she doesn't like me buying all the weird stuff.....she thinks I can scratch build it out of thin air.

thanks for the good word.....I hope you will follow along.

Some more progress - first attempt at the mast seat, don't think it will be the final one.

Deck planked, also not quite done, but getting there.  Left side will be left with framework exposed.

Nice repair job on that shroud. I've had several parts and one whole car look like it was used as a teething toy by Godzilla and I expect that despite my best efforts to prevent it, it will happen again. Love the four legged children but they can be a disaster around models!

really nice progress Steve......the woolings and the added features add so much to the model     kits in general leave a lot of these aspects out.....that's what makes them so generic.  it's up to us modelers to do the research and add them in.  your doing a swell job in that dept.

I usually rig from the bow to the stern as well.   the bow spirit is lashed with it's stays and is a good counter for the rigging as I go back.  I do the stays first,  then the shrouds,  and then the back stays.
the thing to keep in mind with rigging,  is to stay as close to 'zero tension' as possible.  keeping the tension equal will prevent other lines from sagging.......it can be a hard balancing act.  supporting the yards with a pin is common,  but some suspend them with the rigging as well.

great job on your bounty....she's look'in really sweet!

Thanks Nigel they sure are some fine looking boats in tallships log I must admit on my previous build I found the boats particularly challenging ,as a beginner I assumed the little boats would surely be easier than the ship boy was I wrong,I have the boat kit in order from Cornwall showed in an earlier post but still haven't received my order from 24 days ago ,I have spoken with Cornwall and they think it may have been sent to wrong address and they have assured me a new order is on its way to me so fingers crossed it should arrive soon .i must add I have never had a problem with this company in the past and I am sure it's a genuine mistake

Thanks ken I enjoy your log also it is very informative I also enjoy the lovely photos of real life ships and I particularly liked your post on the large scale rc planes that is something I am strongly considering getting into and would like to pick your brain sometime on uk suppliers and usefull forums brands of kit etc.

with out my rigging blocks I am keeping busy pre fitting upper shourds and rat lines etc I will put some pics up and explain a bit more later on this evening

Stunning work on the rigging  Michael just wondered if you know that there are a set of sails for the Vasa . If you look on the Cornwall model ship site they sell them. I have fitted them to mine and they don't look to bad .

    Hello Denis
I have been lurking about several of your builds, in fact one of them has gotten me in some trouble! I was reading your Titanic build and the Admiral saw it and made it clear that instead of building all the "Junkie looking" models that I like, that if I REALLY loved her I would build HER a large lit version of the Titanic of her own to be placed on her personal TV as a night light when she watches TV at night. Adding sound so that it plays the music from the movie would have to be considered as well of course!

So now I have accrued a 1/350th Titanic, (eBay) and means for lighting, and have identified the photo etch stuff that will be required. I have not lit a ship to this degree before and I have never worked with photo etch stuff at all, even though I have scratch built brass stuff for small plastic ships in years past. Now I will have to do it, just because of you!

I also have this kit, (Jolly Roger) in my horde and at first when I thought of getting started in building ships again after A LOT of years of not building I was going to build it as either the La Flore, or the Hermione. I built it as a much younger person some 35 or possibly 40 years ago and at that time I though it was a great kit and made into a very nice model, (But you know the memory can be misleading when you get to my age) that was why I have two of them on the shelf!

So you need to quit doing this kind of stuff! I am already trying to get a Brigantine done to give to a friend for his birthday, get time to start and build the Admiral's Titanic, and I want to build a MS Sultana, (Also already on the shelf from years ago) for one of my sons who has expressed an interest in that kind of ship model. I only have so many years left at my age and I need to get some of these done before they become eBay inheritances for my surviving kids to sell!

All aside though I do enjoy looking at your builds and am interested in seeing how this one turns out.

    Lou

Russ – Thanks for your kind words much appreciated – thanks for dropping by as well.

B.E. Noted – I am now on your page understanding your posts, thanks. Eventually I may need to add these. I did actually follow how you included these on you last build.
PS: I’m still learning the vocabulary (:-)

    ======================

So moving forward to the sails.

Karl thanks SO much for your log sail measurement details. Super helpful indeed.

Frank I have decided to follow your sail presentation – I will also furl all lower sails, and have reduced the sail sizes per your log suggestions.

Karl and Frank your build logs will also continue to be invaluable when it is time to add blocks, rig the yards and sails all together.

Monday the sails get started in earnest; I go to the sewing center for stitching.

    Cheers,

Hi Steve, I've just been looking at your 'lump of wood' for the small boat as I got something similar with mine.  However. have you checked this log out
Take a look at his construction method for his boats it's genius (but seriously difficult).  As I was only supplied one small boat with my kit I'm going to have a go at producing the larger of the two boats as per John McKay.
    Cheers

S.R.'s planking arrived today making for a nice couple days of acquiring new stuff for the build. The mahogany and walnut strips are from Crown Timberyard, the bass wood is just from Hobby Lobby but works great for sub structure work. I also picked up a pair of those pliers for making wire loops for eyebolts. Looked like they might be a good investment after seeing them used on some other logs here. I realized when I bought them that I own a very nice collection of jewelry making tools and supplies for having never made a piece of jewelry....

Well, I guess I better get to building as I no longer have any excuses!

Had to take some time to reorganize the lumber rack this evening. It had been needing it and with the new wood I finally decided to take the time and clean it up. Found some pieces I thought I was out of and now I have a better idea of what I have.

Then it was back to work on gun port framing. Slowly advancing down the hull. Focusing on them has also allowed me to see areas that will need a little more fill and sanding work before the 2nd planking. It is like looking for a lost item. Stop looking for it and it appears! Same with dips and uneven planks. Stop looking for them and there they are. Not a problem as I was expecting to have to do another sanding anyway. I am just marking the spots I want to fix as I see them and will get to it when done with the framing.

The top row of ports I am still not certain how I am going to do them. At the moment the have been cut out to receive the metal fittings that came with the kit. These contain the port frame and the ornate casing. The more I look at them the more I think they will be replaced by something I create. This of course means I will have to resize the ports but at this stage that is not a big deal to do. I will sleep on it as I have a couple more days before I reach those ports anyway.
