This has to be the most impressive tutorial I have ever read. Thank you for explaining everything in such detail. I learned plenty from just reading through. What a beautiful build.

I tend to go off on my own on many kits so on this one I have stained the hull with the gel Fruitwood, coppered the bottom, added Trenails and had the resin figure head painted. Finishing up Trenails, about another two weeks and awaiting Chapter 4

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I love the Byrnes but I'm not so sure I'll use it enough to justify the expense. I would like to get more into scratch building so there's that. I'm really feeling the pull to try Chucks Winchelsea !  I like everything about it.

You can't keep building kits forever. The more you do it, the more you scratch-build. Before you know it, you'll wake up one morning and say, "Why am I building models that have been built a hundred or more times before when I can build anything I want?"

Save your money and buy the saw. You know you want it. You know you deserve it. When was the last time you treated yourself to something really nice?

Unless you are going to be ripping balsa planks, none of those cheap saws are going to be much good.

I have had one of these:  MicroLux Mini Tilt Arbor Table Saw for about 20 years, and it can cut planks with a decent blade and finely adjustable rip fence.

At that price one would do to well spend an extra hundred or so for the Byrnes.  I keep thinking about getting one myself, but I haven't got into scratch building yet
and my little saw does everything I need to do right now.

I used the slay to build up a structure to keep the angles right.

Notice there are two pieces of triply holding.  The profile of both follow the correct arch.

    Glued all in place

I have completed installation of the Ebony wales, black strake in Boxwood and the sheer cap in AYC.

The Two strakes below the wales and the rest of the lower planking will be made from white american Holly as you can see, I like the contrast against the super black of the ebony.

I now have to begin fairing the internal bulkheads down to the proper thickness and then start lining off the lower hull - It will be a while until the next update.

    Fabulous stuff Chuck.  Looks fantastic...
I'm not sure about me milling a 1/64" strip. Right now I'm not sure I can make a decent 1/8" strip.  However I think I will be getting a lot of practice in the future......
Always looking forward to your updates....

Starting on the port side tomorrow, got the black strake on, which proved to be a test of ones patience no doubt. Wales painted and I think I took care of my issue with the second layer of Wales having a gap. The drop plank is in position and required very little sanding on top to meet the Wales.
The cedar has proved to be an amazing material, On the aft end of the wales, I was able to sand a very sharp edge at the counter that I finished off with 800 grit prior to paint.
The black strake was cut below 1/32” at an average of .025”, it proved to be very difficult to manipulate (wouldn’t edge bend) and easily screwed up. But it got it to sit...with a few scars but it will be ok.
i need to get some WOP on there ASAP now but I was slightly concerned about how yellow it will be, so I did two samples both with CA smudges that were sanded off (just like my model) to see how the wood would take a light bit of color as well as WOP on the normal cedar and the CA tainted. I think I will just apply WOP to the bare cedar to avoid any light spots caused by the CA. But I’m curious what you guys think. The slightly tinted one (with WOP on top) is aft of the plain WOP one, both have CA smudges on the top two planks in the middle. For some reason the camera always makes it look worse! My photos are my own worst enemy!

The anchor lining has been added to the port and starboard sides.

Next I'll resume the hull planking.

Thank you Chuck for your advice. Also thanks for all the likes too.

What I did is replaced the 3/16" 5th strake with a 7/32" strake. Clipped in place.
I then measured the distance between the 2nd strake and the 5th strake. These two
strakes should have been 1/4" wide but I needed a bit more than that. So I then split the
distance between 2nd strake and the 5th strake and cut the two strakes to fit. These
are represented by the red boxes in the picture. Each set between the ports had to be custom cut
to fit. Once I got past bulkhead "7" I resumed normal planking.
Whew I hope that explains it.
