MESSIS reacted to Mirabell61 in Eagle of Algier 1753 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - 1:48 - Chebec - Nils Langemann
Update :...
made a trial 143 mm long (upfront) 1:48 sweep from bamboo wood, in order to determine size and length as well as position in the bulwark, where all the oar ports meanwhile had been cut into...
Nils
there are 9 sweep ports on each side...
the pivot point is the bulwark itself, whereby the inside rail supports for hight and angle, when the blade is submerged
hight of the tin figure is 35 mm
its all from one piece of bamboo rod
the thin black serving line coil protects the pivot bearing point in the bulwark...

MESSIS reacted to donrobinson in Barque Stefano by donrobinson - MarisStella - 1:63
Good morning all, Thanks for all the compliments, likes and for just stopping in.
Not much has been going on lately just planking and more planking, I am just a little over half done now and going hard. To date I have 38 strakes completed which is approximately 254 planks that equals to about 30.4 meters of .5 x 4 mm strips of beech wood. So, yes, life has been a beech!!
Really not much to show as it is all kind of boring, I thought if any of you were suffering from insomnia this might help. Here we go:
Planking around transom complete, this was a little exciting
Showing here the little section of planking that needs to be filled in. I really wasn't too sure how the correct way of doing this was but thinking this will all be painted later that this method would do just fine. This is three pieces of .5 x 4 mm planking edge glued together and the rough shape of opening marked out.
The back side of the laminated piece was coated with thin ca before cutting to shape, this wood is fairly brittle
Final fitting and glued into place
And how it looks after the next strake installed on either side
Garboard and broad strakes installed, final trimming and sanding will be done when planking is completed. I have almost completed the area above the waterline, which is all painted, below the waterline is covered with copper plates. Decision now is to just get the hull covered or continue doing it the proper way, which takes a lot more time.
Thanks for stopping in and have a good day

Another adaptation: one issue with this kit is the lack of any spares, and in some cases (eyebolts), some serious parts shortages. And in many cases, you get just enough wood, and you have to be careful to use it up efficiently.
When it came time to make the forward mast, I found that I had just enough of the right diameter wood -- but in two pieces! Earlier cuts of that diameter had left me with two shorter pieces in place of one just barely long enough. My choices were to either use a smaller diameter, or do what I ended up doing -- which is to create a two-part mast. Looks kind of interesting. The mast in the picture isn't varnished yet.
Regards,
David

FINISHED!!
My build of King of the Mississippi is now complete. Pictures attached.
Need to create a shelf for this in my office, and do a cleanup on the workroom. Might start the next one (Amati Grand Banks) before I go away on the 6th for a week in the Carib.
Regards,
David

Update :...
fitted decore fries and handrail on the stb. poop deck. The solution with the soldered brass pins works out quite well....
Also fitted a handrail all around the gun deck
Nils
the mermaid is holding a starfish in hands. What looks like she is having two horns are the remains of the charms hanging / holding loop. I use this for fastening the top to the cap rail...., providing more stiffnesss

MESSIS reacted to donrobinson in Trabakul by donrobinson - FINISHED - MarisStella - 1:32 scale
Thanks Bob and Ian.
Bob:Man I hear you on that one
Ian: I will try that next time, worth a try. Thanks
The wrinkles were driving me crazy, so I undid the sheet lines allowing me to hold the sail, then I painted the sail with water then using my portable ironing board( !/2" x 4" x 8" piece of basswood wrapped in dish cloth) I carefully ironed again avoiding the seams. Looks much better now.
I have lived my whole life hardly ever ironing clothes and I'll wear clothes that have sat in the dryer for a week and don't worry about it. Now here I am spending an hour of my life on the edge of going for a drink and ironing a sail. What is it about this hobby?
Anyway here are some new pictures:
