1/4" - Yikes! Nice job on those winches Rob.

Yeah....I wrestled with many ideas and processes of fabrication till I settled on the design used.
Lots of grinding and metal fab was necessary.

Fantastic work Jeff......I can appreciate your ingenious methods......Your home made lathe appears to be set up for a left handed worker.
Love that Great Republic picture.....places just in the right place to give you inspiration.
Your build is coming along nicely.

Popeye.....This build will be groundwork for developing your adaptive re-engineering skills. Having a good set of plans and images will aid even further. Sometimes these smaller less accurate models need a flexible modeler to bring them from a possible nightmare to a reasonable representation of the vessel.
Your doing very well. Make sure you keep the deck and monkie rail line even and properly curved. This model could lend itself to hyper detailing if the modeler was ambitious. I can't tell you how many times I had to forgo the provided structures or parts in some kits and completely scratch build them myself. A scratch builders life.
Good luck and feel free to ask me any questions if you have any that have not been answered.

Popeye...wonderful progress.....
Now splash some fish guts around and bloody up that deck and she'll really come to life.
Fine attention to detail.

Nils...I've looked in on your other builds and I'm very impressed with the accomplishments.
Fine models all of them.

I fully appreciate your intuitiveness in seeing the possibilities within common items that you incorporate into your build. It is not a common thing, for some modelers to be able to *see into* something and envision making it into something else...something needed for your ship. Fabrication of parts on an assembly line like fashion is a hard pressed skill....achieved only over time. You exhibit much skill in this.
Experimentation coupled with an acute skill set and dextral ability is (IMV) a hallmark of a seasoned builder.
I've enjoyed your build log and the adventure you have taken us on.

I made few more slight corrections to it and I still have some mods to make to the final look and finish....but it is pretty close to finished.
Without photographs or builders drawing to know exactly how the figurehead was mounted...one must use an educated guess. I'm confident from what information I do have...it is as accurate as can be modeled.

Thanks Omega...that aft rail was a booger. I had to laminate several pieces together while I was forming the curve(Off ship), then secure it to the stanchions while making adjustments before it dried......
Figurehead we come......

I fabricated my winches from Clam clips.......These little guys. I cut the large lip edge off and cut it down and removed the center..then added the roller drum and guide/actuation rod for the handle.
Just to let you all see the re-engineering I sometimes go through.
