John, thanks for stopping by and for your compliment. Of course we'd all like to see you start yours sooner, but this is definitely a hobby that can't be rushed. I have finished with flags. I got the famous "DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP" flag and the Pennsylvania state flag hung from their masts. I included a picture of all three flags hung and I like the effect the foil gives to them. This leaves me with the ship's boats and some touch up painting here and there and I'm finished with her.

    Hello Mates,

OK that's enough pain for one morning; such poor results. Going downstairs to make myself a second latè, maybe Irish style (:-). Then, go online and order real ropes from Syren.

I could, arguably, get better -practice, practice, practice I get that. But this very inexpensive Model Expo Ropewalk also won't allow for really long runs. So I'm moving forward, and, I don't want to spend the big bucks for the Byrnes (excellent product from all reviews).

I don't have a closet full of pending builds. It would need several ships just to pay for itself. Deferring to the experts on ropes. Oh I will also order a complete set of pear wood blocks from Syren as well (:-)

PS: The Ropewalk's only problem is operator malfunction, I'm not in any way disparaging the product. It works (:-) Model Expo is an excellent company. In fact I bought my Corel from them, along with many  other things.

    Regards,

Elia, its the effect of a little water on 120 gr paper
Mark, no need to keep a book of photo's we have MSW
Druxey, I thought the tally's were to big to, but TFFM describes them 3"  0' and I blindly followed this. So new ones are made(point taken)
Michael, it's not a loose thread but a cringle (really!)

Unfortunately the sails and tally's were already glued in place. Getting the tall's off did damage the sails a little

Top to bottom, the original I used yesterday in 3pt font, then 1,5pt font and 1pt font, I'll use the smalles although the text is almost not readable, but who cares

    Hi Patrick, Scott, Pythagoras,

Thank you for those nice posts.  I am much too critical of myself and I know it.  There are many people in this hobby who are incredible craftsmen and I have to accept that I will not be one of them any time soon.

I have to remember that a model is a simulation of the real thing, not the thing itself.

    Hi Joseph,
I'm new to MSW and just found your build log. The Niagara was my sixth venture into shipbuilding and there are mistakes on it, but, like Patricks' post, I'm not going to dwell on them. Years ago I built Constructos' Enterprise which is displayed at my home. Many visitors have commented on its appearance, but not one has mentioned that the pintles and gudgeons are on upside down and yet the rudder has never fallen off. I'm leaving them that way to remind me to not judge myself to harshly. It IS fun and I just can't stop it. You have done a great job so far and I will look forward to more of your posts.
       Please continue your build.

Joesph, I definitely know what you're talking about. It is very intimidating to post pictures of your work and hold them to pictures of other's work. I decided long ago however, that my skill at this stage of this hobby wasn't going to be at the same level as others. It has helped me considerably. I know where each and every fault is with my Niagara and for the most part I'm not going to go back on them. I will keep them in place to remind myself of the learning curve in this hobby. I'm sure I'm not speaking alone when I say that we are all looking forward to seeing some progress soon with your build.

Finally I understand why I have stopped working on Niagara.

I have been looking at it under a microscope. Literally.  I take such good photographs (as we all do) that I can see tiny, tiny imperfections, ones 99% of people won't notice.

I have very high standards for my own work (as we all do). In my day job I restore antique keyboard instruments and I take real pride in how they look when I am done.  A hand-rubbed finish puts me briefly into an altered state when I see it and touch it.

I don't have the tools or the technique to work to that level at 1:64.  So I am reconsidering how to approach this and enjoy it.  Perhaps I shall post pictures taken from across the room .

Showing my work to other craftsmen, who also have high standards causes me to work much harder, at a higher stress level than I want for a hobby.. Wasn't this supposed to be fun? .

I think I may just let some of the hyper detailled  things slide and not post close-ups for a while.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Are there any threads in the forums?

Today I finished tidying up the work area so that I now can work on either Skipjack or the pilot cutter now that both have their own tables. Rearranging things really does take a while it seems getting some of the model wood out of boxes and onto some additional shelving  makes it so much easier to work.

That done I was able to get the final gluing sorted for the new walls of the cockpit when it is good and set I will work on the top rail. Walter thought it was about time.

The gaff was re-threaded with some of the new rope, a fiddly job, and as I was working I kept thinking about the incredible amount of rigging on Nils' Clipper.

Then time to get the boom finished after some final shaping of the jaws, the holes were drilled for the strength bolts and for the slot to accommodate the plate for attaching the tack of the mainsail and the down-haul. because of the length I needed to add a support.

Once the holes were drilled I began gluing on the leather.

Then the leather was cut to allow for the wrapping.

after folding down the tabs and the final shaping the jaws end was given a liberal coating of Teak oil.

Left to right the new lines are the Gaff throat up-haul, peak halliard, jib shroud, gaff throat down-haul. Next I need to make the support for the boom on the mast.

Hi Dave, thanks for the comments......The Hurricane House consisted of 2 structures, the one I have built so far, is the crew's galley, and a store room. If you notice it has a wide hinged door pointed forward to be able to pass food to the crew. The next structure is a crew's head, and more storage, and contains the ladder to go below into the captain, and first mate's quarters. There is the tiller, and a steering box, which covers the mechanism for the ship's wheel and rudder mechanism pulleys. All of this is covered with a roof, which also stores a couple of whaleboats on top. It is called a Hurricane House because it offers the Helmsman a sort of protected area to steer the ship in heavy seas and or a storm. Next I'll build the tiller and wheel mechanism and copper plate and attach the rudder, then buld the head and stowage structure.

Here are pictures of the real ship Hurricane House and Tiller/wheel mechanism..

    Hi Guys,

Thank you all so very much for your very kind comments and remarks, also thanks everybody who hit the like button, I felt a little overwhelmed and extremely flattered.   :)

Well it happened, my inexpensive and rather large chisels ( bargain of the month ) exploded on me at the first touch, I was all set up and ready to go, the lathe was turning nicely, I just presented the chisel to the dowel and bang, it shattered on me.

What I thought was steel turned out to be cast iron, I don't feel as though I want to use them any more so they will be assigned to the scrap bin with a very big lessen learned.

I was told " you get what you paid for", Grant you were absolutely right mate.

They were Am-Tech, 8 Piece Wood Lathe Chisel Set, you have been warned.

I do have a small update, in my last post I said I was going to make a Traveller, well I have had a go and for a first attempt I'm quite happy with it, it was fiddly and on occasion the room went a dark shade of blue.

I took the pattern from Longridge, I also put a sheave  in the Jib-boom which to my surprise went without a hitch.

I have some pics of the Traveller.

So that's that, the work on the Bowsprit continues and hopefully I will have an update on the finished item soon.

Thank you all once again for your very kind comments.

    Be Good

There probably were racks: air circulation was important to prevent mould or rot. At very least, there would be battens on the deck. If you are showing stored sails, don't forget their wooden identification tags!

I started working on the sail room, a lot of preparation went into making a jig to cut the mortises for the loovers. After that was set up it was pretty straightforward (I thought, but making the different stanchions with the mortices on the right sides took more than one try....)

The sail room will be made off the model, it's a big 3D jigsaw and I foresee trouble ahead to get the last side in place. But we'll see.

I also got some fabric to make a couple of sails. I'm wondering if their shouldn't be racks of some sort to store the sails.
