Looking forward to following your build. Many years ago I re-read Moby Dick and became so interested in the whaling industry I made a trip to both the New Bedford and Nantucket whaling museums. That led to eventually to learning to sail and buying a 30 foot sloop. Sold the boat years ago and now learning to be a model shipwright. By the way, Moby Dick gives some very detailed descriptions of the waling ship, rigging and way of life. Dave -
I've used 3M sponge pads with success. They hold sandpaper well and easily conform to surface shapes.

Vallorbe files have served me well. Not cheap but good quality. I have escapement files from them as well as a cheaper mini file set from Husky. The escapement files are smaller than the mini files.

I see WEN is another make worth looking at.

Byrne's saw accessories question..
CPDDET replied to CPDDET's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
That would cover just about anything I currently use. Would it handle 1/64 birch aircraft ply as well? Dave -

Byrne's saw accessories question..

And what about saw blades for scratch building? Since the saw comes with a 24 tooth, 4 inch blade I thought I would stick with the 4inch size and order the 36 tooth as well as the 100 tooth slitting blade which is recommended for use with tilt table. Are 3inch blades really needed at all? Is a 36 tooth blade needed or will the 24 tooth suffice for all cutting? Obviously I have no experience / knowledge of saw blades. Dave -
Got my income tax refund and will be purchasing a Byrne's saw. Which accessories are worth purchasing with it? Dave

Thanks Patrick. Almost finished rebuilding the skylight window frames. Went a different route and they came out much nicer. Will post an update later this week. Dave

Beautiful work. I'll remember that tip about the lines when I get to my rigging.

I'm pretty happy with the look and your right about the friction fit holding the pins without the need for any gluing. I also like your idea of sanding the frames after they are assembled. It's tedious work that can't be rushed. Pulling out the camper for a few days so the build will be on the back burner for a bit

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
