Hi Delf. I’ve been following your Speedy build which has been really helpful, so thanks very much. For the main yard and fore yard truss pendants, which ring bolt on the deck did you use and where did you tie it off?

Hi. Apologies for the tardy reply - I haven't visited the forum for a while.

I'm glad you found my log helpful. It's a few years since I rigged her so I had to get the model out off the shelf to refresh my memory. Just abaft each mast there is a short line of ring bolts. In each case, I used the outermost ring on the port side. I had a look back at my log and the following section explains how the line was tied off: "The next job was to seize a double block into the end of each pendant, with the falls rigged to a single block hooked to an eyebolt abaft the mast. The kit instructions simply say to belay the end of the falls to the nearest convenient point. I believe it is neater and equally valid (according to TFFM and others) to wrap the spare end round the tackle and finish with a half hitch. I used a clip to hold the tackle in place while I did the hitching." In other words, you hook the lower block to the portside ringbolt then bring the line up about half way back to the double block, wrap it round itself a few times and finish with a half hitch. You can see this in the log photos illustrating this step. I understand this was common practice where a tackle only had to be adjusted occasionally.

Hope this helps, and best wishes with your build.

  2. I got fed up with deep drawers with piles of tools, so with permission I got these garage drawers. Being shallow they are fantastic. Also in shot is a very slow Speedy. Rigging is a challenge!
  3. I can remember as a small boy shaking the hands of my Great Grandfather who was a farm labourer for nearly 60 years. It was like shaking a tough leather glove. I would imagine anyone in the naval service for any length of time would have very similar hands.
  4. My book ordered from Seawatch in the sale arrived promptly in the UK- about two weeks. I think post around the world is rather random at the moment.
  5. This is terribly sad news. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
  6. I agree Andy. The Lancaster of the Battle of Britain Flight passed close over me when I was on the South Downs. Flanked by two Spitfires. Unforgettable.
  7. I bought the following lithograph about 25 years ago. Turns out that the artist Edward Wadsworth painted dazzle camouflage designed by Norman Wilkinson on ships during WWI. Both members of the Vorticist School of art.

Is there any way the Admiralty Workshop can be made available on YouTube so those of us across the pond can enjoy?

You will have to contact Greg or David...I am only going to help them.  It is their workshop.  Its really best to learn these close up and hands on.  But you may want to contact them about it.

  9. Fantastic news and I wish you every success. The books are truly amazing and have been key to increasing the knowledge about these amazing craft and the quality of modelling.
  10. Agreed. I was christened in Greensted Church dating from mid 9th c.
  11. I purchased some 30 years ago three English Lime, not Bass wood, planks about 7 foot by six by two inches. Ron McCarthy uses lime in his book “Building plank on frame ship models” book. Am think of going over to the dark side and using this to make a 1/4” Swan cross section. Thoughts? If not, other uses?
  12. Great project. Brings back many memories of my first plank on bulk head project. My Hjejlen sadly lost due to many house moves and young children.
  13. The issue with the chuck is interesting. I got the collet jammed in the chuck and had to cut the collet to get it of the drill and release the collet off the flexible shaft. Any solutions?
  14. Reminds me of a friend who bought a new huge Marshall amp without telling his wife. The giveaway was when he couldn’t carry it up the stairs on his own....
  15. Well I cut the nut off and after a bit of effort I got the collet off the flexible drive shaft. New nut ordered! Back on Brig Speedy tomorrow. Thank you for your ideas. Really appreciated. I find this forum an absolutely amazing place.
  16. The stub at the top of he photo is the end of the collet. I have had a go at trying to unscrew the collet nut with no luck. The collet nut is loose on the collet but I can’t get the collet off the flexible drive shaft. I think it’s FUBAR as our American friends say. Thanks for your ideas and have a better day!
  17. Thanks guys. The 1,000 word photo below. The collet nut is loose but the collet will not let go of the flexible shaft.
  18. So being a typical accountant I’ve got a collet stuck on a Proxxon drill spindle. Probably explains why I was rugby tackled to the ground by engineers in the office when I went to pick up anything mechanical. Any ideas both on removing it and how not to do it again? Be gentle, remember my profession....
  19. I thinking of buying the Naiad books and I live in the UK. Does anyone know if duty is to be paid?
