  1. That is CRAZY - it is like looking at my missouri next to my harriet lane!
  2. I like how you used your change for the vase as the scale looks good so far. Is it any particular cutter or just a generic one?
  3. Next I added the pieces that run under the deck the length of the boat (what are they called?) thanks to the instructions (lack-there-of) I don't know what any parts are called. Then it was time to add the deck. Ok next is planking. Popeye, did you decide, in retrospect that it would have been better to do the deck planking first? also, it sounded from your blog that you weren't thrilled with something in your planking, is there something I should do to not screw up? I'm planning on putting in some balsa fillers. Hope this works ok.
  4. Now that everything is all sorted it's time to start building! Lets get the stem and keel together. Gluing things as a butt joint is tough so I used some scraps to stabilize the joint while the glue dried after I took the supports off I still left the rubber-bands on. the next step was to place spacers on the keel to keep the bulkheads the correct distance apart. Now time to install the bulkheads Some of the wood provided was pretty poor quality.... These splits go 1/8 through the thickness! they also get rid of the nice square edges.
  5. I don't know why, but I have a fascination with things that are out of the ordinary. While I think the tall ships like the Victory and Constitution are gorgeous I was drawn to the little fishing trawler style of ship. After looking at my options I settled on the Krabbenkutter from Billing Boats. I've started it at this point so it is time to share. Pull up a chair, popcorn, beer, or cider and enjoy Lets start with the obligatory kit photos.
  6. and some more finished photos. (For the europeans, I've got a 0.20 euro so you can see sizes ) [if you want photos with your own type of money please send it to me ] And I'm done I hope you enjoyed the build. My next build is on the Billing Krabbenkutter - It will be up soon.
  7. continued.... I made some airplanes, a crane, and two catwalks Big guns now Yes that is two different sizes of wire in the guns and adding all the guns to the ship
  8. Runner, nope it really really is a normal penny Scott, well the railings are really only metal that you bend up. Bender, Daniel, Augie, Mark, Padeen - Thank you so much Mathew, Pete... Don't worry, you'll get that today! UPDATE TIME - everybody grab your popcorn...oooh no Sjors never showed up - no popcorn, sorry folks Ok, I put the satellite on as well as the gun on the stack. You can also see the 4 tiny radars (if you squint) Next was adding the forward decks and the next deck
  9. Looking good there Wayne. I like your penny but it's not mine, your's seems to end in a 4....mine ends in 72! hehehehe You'll be there soon!
  10. no I think I'll leave it as just metal. Maybe I'll do another someday in the future and paint it. It would be easy to do the camo, I would just flick a brush with paint at it since those tiny blobs would be appropriate to scale
  11. glad I said something before it was too late...again your build looks really nice - look forward to see more from you.
  12. Have a few more photos for you all. I've lost a couple pieces that were as small as the "D" on my penny.... I had to take part of the top portions off since I forgot half of one of my thin decks (The topmost layer with the bullet shape just to the right of my fingers is new.) then added the three bullet shaped parts back on Then I realized I again missed a deck and had to go down layers. (see the round thing with the railings? that's new) Well, I don't remember what this part ended up being, now it just looks like a tiny metal circle... Here is a TINY deck - the rectangular sections get bent into railings. and a funnel... Here is that same funnel and the funnel that goes on top of it on a penny. and finally a sleuth photo of my husband..... hehehehe shhhhhh don't tell.
  13. Tony it looks really nice. I hope you don't mind me mentioning though, I think your dead eyes might be upside down. They should be opposite triangles like this...
  14. Yay I'm not the only one who uses nailpolish! Really nice work.
  15. Your inlays are amazing. I am so impressed. I need to try this sometime.
  16. Hope (I've used CA "gap filling" it works OK but make sure your brass is not greasy from your fingers and maybe even roughed a bit so that the glue has something to bite into)
  17. I tried weldbond and didn't really like it. As to the CA question, one other thing to consider with choosing between viscosity of those glues is what you are going to be bonding together. If you are putting two metal pieces together and there will be no clearance then you are maybe ok to use super thin, but if you are gluing two pieces of wood together you want to use a thicker one since there is more space between the grains and so you need to fill the "gaps" or you won't have good hold... I will echo what many other people said....when I have the ability to use wood glue (my favorite is gorilla) I use that over CA every time.
  18. oh boy! My nameplate badge thing came in today so I just need to take it to an engraving place and I'll be all done!!!!!!!!!!!! Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. He's doing what he did last time - he's a lot further and I had to nag him incessently to start his log...he does have his paddle wheels on at this point and a lot more done. I don't think I saw Jared mention, but the directions didn't call out having a black bottom but after doing some research he realized most of the bottoms of those riverboats were tarred or sealed in some other way so the water didn't rot the wood...he decided to use black to show that aspect. The boat really is looking nice. thanks for all your support guys.
  20. Can't wait to see what you do with the kit. It looks pretty nice from your photos.
  21. Viva yards (or Bounty, or Scott, or Brawny....) hehehe
  22. Additionally people make a big deal about scale because as the scale gets smaller (1:96, 1:144, 1:160......) you loose details that you would otherwise be showing. If you look at my Bounty's Jolly boat (1:25) I was able to show a bag of food and a carpenter's chest in full 3D. If I were to put those on the Harriet Lane I just completed (1:144) they would be something just bigger than a dot on a piece of paper. To some there is an added (and often disliked) challenge to those tinier scale ships. That doesn't mean any particular scale is better or worse, it just changes what your focus might be on for the duration of the build.
