  1. Hi Antony, by now non of the frames are glued to the keel yet. Its only stuck in place and positioned by the fixture. Will have to cut out all the notches for rails and stringers first (frame by frame) before glueing them down to the keel permanently, and make card templates for the decks, so these decks can be cut out of 0,8 mm thick ply. Those decks will then be planked with 3 mm wide pine strips, caulking, etc.... I`m wandering if it will be possible to slip the floor into the cargo hold in (in parts), without removing some of the deckbeams of the main deck. I did this on my Pegasus build, so it should work generally. Besides that the model will be 25% larger, this early framework is not dealed with in the original Amati plan. Thats why the preperation and planing will take a bit longer for the involved sequences... Nils
  2. Hi Dan, sounds very promissing, your Bismarck project, I wish you a lot of fun and success with the sequences, must be one of the most difficult card kits.... Happy birthday and best regards... Nils
  3. Thank you very much Kees, on this model I`ll be doing things I dd`nt try before...., so for the planking I odered size 1,5 x 6 mm planks in "red cedar" wood, trust that will provide a nice warm mediteranian tone, hoping it will not be too brittle when shaping... Nils
  4. update... checking out the hights for stringers / rails, and stand hight for the crew beneath deck... Nils
  5. Congratulatios B.E., This is an awesome model, a real gem, and very well built... Nils
  6. Keith, yes you`re right, agree, the scroll saw makes life easier indeed, which would be worth the investment... Nils
  7. Thank you very much Keith and Carl, Keith, Thanks, I use the hand jig saw since I started building models and would`nt want to mis it... Carl, The agent of Algier Harbor Carpenter Services has just delivered a bunch of 1/2 dozen oars for the ships boat. He is still a bit pale and tired from working on them all week, but for sun protection he is wearing his new tricorn hat made from 0,3 mm brass sheet Nils
  8. Hi Keith, thanks for looking in and for your kind comment. The frames were all cut out manually with with a good old jig saw and fine thin blades... Nils
  9. Thanks for looking in John and Patrick, am pleased you like the build... Nils
  10. Super work Karl, obviously you`re right back on the track again... Nils
  11. Update Today the ordering customer drops in at the shipyard to see the progress of his "baby", accompanied by his two sons Nils four frames still missing....
  12. Hi Kees, good traditional POB hand made hull making involved, love it ! I`m in as well.... Nils
  13. Peter, I`m very pleased to welcome you to the Chebec. In the moment there is still a good drive at it, an looks like the fixture works well... Build log part 2 setting up the frames /bulkheads with the keel. Unfortunately the outside contour straking can first be checked when the whole framework later on is removed from the fixture. But there will have to be fairing done anyhow. Perhaps I will add a minimum of stringers as well, in order to ease the planking later. Nils Keel is in place (not to be glued in) glueing the paper bulkheads to the ply. The paper will be scraped off afterwards 8 layer ply was ordered but really came 10 layer, total 5,2 mm thick up to now all is fitting well (in dry fit)
  14. Many thanks to Antony, Jason,Jean-Philippe, Ian and Kurt, for looking in and for your nice comments.... Antony, I found the 8-layer ply (aeroply) on Ebay, and have gained good results with it for thin structures. I used it as well on the frame work of my Pegasus build some years ago.. Jason, welcome to the round, glad you joined in..., I`m also looking forward to see if the hand jigsaw cut bulkheads / frames will be straking properly, and the first time used positioning fixture will be worth the upfront effort... Jean-Philippe, nice to welcome you as well, take a seat please..and enjoy Kurt, I also very much lked the lines of this ship type, hoping to transfer the impression to a certain degree into this scratch build Nils
  15. Hi Martin, thanks for your words, right with reference to large builds, but the time has come to concentrate on smaller projects now... Nils
  16. Hi Ken, Thanks for joining aboard... unfortunately I did`nt do any special preperations for the decorations by now. I have though been looking and found semi- material for decorations for the gunports (outer bulwarks), and for the brass balustrades of the aft high deck. Usualy I search the web, if there are any halfway simular items I can use (as is) or with slight changes and modifications, taking the scale required into account. Nils
  17. Hi B.E., that pinnace looks lovely, and so is also "George" in his outfit and the rowing position... did you find the figurine in 1:24, or any "surgery" involved and perhaps custom made period clothing, wunderbar ! Nils
  18. Hi Dan, I think we`re in the same alley there, having interest also in ships of other nations and cultures..... I have in mind also do tackle it doing a Chinese trade- junk around 1930 or so, when the Chebec is completed Nils
