Mirabell61 reacted to Peter Cane in STARLET by Peter Cane - a 34" LOA sailing yacht designed by the late Vic Smeed
Thank you John and Druxey for the nice comments.
I always thought that there was something amateurish about hard chine hulls until I read up about them.
I still do not know the full nine yards but as far as sailing purposes are concerned there is a lot to be said for them.
They plane on the water better and are less inclined to " roll ".
When we are racing ( and I am not inclined towards that ) then do we want our boat to roll right over to look " cool " or do we want it as upright as possible in order to catch maximum valuable wind?
My gut feeling is the latter.
I have been reading up and price checking on the International One Metre all singing and dancing carbon and fibre glass hulls together wih custom made sail sets made from the newest " this that and the other " and I have been totally put off by it all.
It costs thousands of dollars, nothing is hand made by the person sailing it and I am not set on competition.
Back to Vic Smeed and building a nice old model yacht.
This IS a hand built boat in the old style.
Take a look at the lines of the hull.
She is a beauty!
Check out the Beam!!...its huge and she will not go over in a hurry.
Just looking at it....I was contemplating making another hull the same and planking it out like an old 50s motorised speed boat.
It has the lines.
The decks are beautifully curved by design.
It gives me much pleasure to go back to Vic's days and relive them by building another of his classics.
In his instructions he even stipulates that the tracing of all parts takes 20 minutes and all the cutting out just 1 1/2 hours.
A full materials list is included.
Thats what I call comprehensive.

Mirabell61 reacted to Peter Cane in Emma by Peter Cane - RADIO - one-metre sprit-rigged sloop designed by Gary Webb
Emma is now painted and a main mast has been fashioned. The radio gear is also installed.
The rc gear is all held in by two screws securing the entire rc block.
The deck will be screwed on so it can be completely removable.
The cast lead bulb on the keel weighs 7 lbs.
The cabin roof and both hatches are removable.
The flared and bent brass tube is to house the jib stays to the winch.
It was a feat of engineering.
I had to buy a flaring tool set, a tube bender and a gas torch to anneal the KS brass tube which is hard brass.
I had to make several attempts at it.
The first was with some copper tube from ebay which arrived at the incorrect size so Slipped through the flaring tool.
I tried ks alluminium tube with the bender but that just flattened at the bends.
I tried the ks brass tube cold but that also flattened at the bends.
I then annealed the brass tube and voila!!!
That poxy bit of tube you see caused hours of frustration, many days waiting for stuff to arrive and cost me $150 to make!.
I have done it now but there is a lot to be said for kits.
Although at the current time there is no kit for Emma.
The mast looks to be massively thick and cants aft quite a bit.
I have made all as per plans so it should be okay.
It is 16mm thick and tapers to 10mm at the top.
Only the fore and sides of the mast are tapered.
The aft is left as is to coincide with the sail Luff.

Don't know about reaching the top of learning but so many thanks mate.

Mirabell61 reacted to Yambo in Emma by Peter Cane - RADIO - one-metre sprit-rigged sloop designed by Gary Webb
My sails are spinnaker cloth Pete. I'll probably make another set of sails sometime soon out of cotton (maybe a couple to compare different materials) but the current set move her along just fine.
You asked me how I bent the sail line tubes - I annealed the tube the same as you did and bent them round a pulley wheel that I had lying around. Flaring the ends was a different matter though and I might have to see if I can borrow a flaring tool for the next ones. I'm reluctant to buy one as it won't get a lot of use.

8.8: The cleats.
Like on all sailboats some cleats have to be placed. I make them from fruit wood (I believe apple).
I don't believe the making process needs a lot of explanation. The pictures show everything.
The cleats around the helm area:
Thank you to follow.
Thank you for the likes.
And thank you for the constructive comments.

8.7 The thwarts
To determine the shape of the aft thwart I lay some small shelves across both risers.
Then I make periphery cards of both sides out of rigid drawing paper.
And also one of the middle part.
I tape the three cards carefully together without shifting them, draw the shape of the thwart and cut it out.
My first template is ready.
I make in the same way templates for the other thwarts.
I make a photocopy of all my templates with the cover of the scanner up, lake that I have a nice contrast.
The templates can now been glued on the wood and be sawn out. The three forward thwarts.
The aft thwart is a little more complicate. For this one I start with gluing three pieces of 3mm oak together.
The I glue the template on it and saw it out.
The forward thwart serves also as mast support and pin rail.
Overview of the thwarts.
All thwarts are strengthened with vertical knees. The forward mast bench even has four. The make them I fit also first paper templates which I use to saw out the knees.
The knees provisionally set on the forward thwart.
All the knees are glued in place and varnished.

There are different types of masking tape.
For every surface there is a tape with a different adhesive strength. The blue tape of the 3M company (my employer) gave me the best results for this purpose.
With only some small errors here and there that needs to be repainted afterwards (Scraping off with a knife and thereafter repainting)
And, great work GL.

Hi all –
Sorry to have been away so long. I somehow developed a bit of writer’s block.
Yes, I know that I am one of the last people you would think this would happen to, but there it is. I could name half a dozen possible causes, and maybe they all ganged up on me at once. But I got a bit of energy at the NRG conference, so I am trying to push through the molasses of my mind and post again. Mostly just captions for photos.
Fortunately, it did not slow down the actual building process, and the model has been completed, delivered and mounted in the museum.
So here are the boats –
Over the head of Madam Secretary, with double rolls along the sides.
These were canvas sheets used to raise the freeboard.
I worked with a designer to have them 3-D printed in 26 foot and 30 foot sizes
Their davits, with PE tackle.
Mounted aboard ship
The larger powered launch
Midships boats tucked into the hull, with their external davits
The gang of boats on the forward deckhouse
I’ll try to post again soon.

thanks for catching up Pete...
I`ve been tied in with so many other things the last days, so the decking of the Zeesboot was cooking on small flame. Now on stb. are fitted the edge planks and the first regular plank, beginning from stern. It looks a bit untidy in the moment, due to the cured out CA used, because of the tensions through the curving, but sanding and scraping will be done at a later point in the process. I have to work around the flat brass members sticking upwards from the ply deck, and I have a good feeling that they are safely anchored to the supporting deck structures below. Caulking is done with a soft HB pencil
Nils
the blackened Fittings hold the shrouds, the ones momentarily still in brass hold the foot-rails leaving a horizontal gap to the deck, to hawse the overcoming water quickly
the 3 mm wide edge planks (1,5 mm thick) are from beechwood, they come out a bit darker after varnishing, and the 3 mm wide deck-planks will be of 0,7 mm thick pine
The little gaps in the deck, next to the brass fittings are closed with little ply bits
