  1. Dear fellow modelers,

last days were again blast. Feel the atmosphere, you are in your workshop, outside is raining hard, on your laptop you have your favorite show and you are doing progress with your model. Everything is going on like you want. Even when you do some small mistake you can repair it. No problems, you are just doing the stuff you like.

I finished inside of side planking and colored it with red color. Also added walnut wale and black strake and colored these with black color. The black and red color is the only one I will be using on this model. Everything else will stay woody. Here are some pictures from proces.I also add the sweep ports (these are far from perfect). Also can anybody tell me what exactly were sweep ports for?

Here are some pictures from process.

  2. Dear fellow modeleres,

again I spent some very quality time in my workshop. Outside was raining, I was listening to my favorite show on laptop and finishing inside deck walls. As I already mentioned I will coat this in red color. ring weekend I will probably cut out the sweep ports.  Here are some pictures.

The AVS has always been one of my favorite builds. I had a great log here on it, but it along with my Pegasus log went down in flames in the great systems crash. I've backed up every log since, but not those unfortunately.

I don't know if I had mentioned here the Bob Hunt Practicum on the AVS, which I believe is still available for sell. As far as you are in your build it would still be helpful for you when it comes time to do the rigging - its here https://www.lauckstreetshipyard.com/ if your interested.

Thanks for the information glbarlow. I already new about it. I had the first part which could be downloaded from Bob Hunt web page. It is great help and great lead how to do things. But still it is a bit pricey for me. So I am now using mosthly original manual, plans and this forum. After long time studying different materials I am more confident that I can make this ship beautifull enough that I will be satisfied. :D If in doubt I can still ask questions here :D.

  4. Dear fellow modelers,

last days in my workshop were blast. I can not even describe it. I sanded the whole hull. I finally made the step I was most afraid of. I am so glad it is looking as it is. I made few mistakes with plank fitting but I believe I can repair it in the second layer. Here are pictures from sanded hull.

I also started with planking of the inside deck walls. Here are also pictures from process.

    Thank you for your interest.

    Till next time.

  5. Dear fellow modelers,

I finally planked first layer of planks on my ship. I am so thrilled. I made mistakes, but I learned a lot. I will make better job for second layer. Basically the second layer I will continue to plank like the first. But I will not add any stealers into second layer as plans are suggesting because it messed my planking. Now I need to sand everything and use putty were necessary. Here are some pictures from proces. Hope you enjoy.

    He Ciciak35,

My wife and I love to travel and, when we travel, we usually go for a long time. Eastern Europe is on our list of destinations we want to visit and we would love to visit Slovakia when we take that trip. We are fortunate to live only 1 1/2 hours from the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains and just 3 hours from Yosemite National Park. I have spent many years participating in mountains sports: lots of rock climbing, mountaineering, skiing, mountain biking, and backpacking. I don't do them as much any more now that I older but we still love to hike and camp. When we travel we always plan our trips to include hiking in beautiful, wild places.

I'm an avid road cyclist and I like to follow the professional bike racers. Slovakia's own Peter Sagan is one of my favorite pro cyclist ever! It's such a shame that Covid19 has cancelled all the grand tours of cycling this year.

    All the best,

OK no problem, just let me know and we will figure something out.

I just read through your build log and you're doing a very nice job. The planking is coming along very well too.

It looks like you live in a very beautiful area. Where are those mountains that are in the background of your photos?

Good luck on the rest of your build!

    Hello Bob,

yes you are right this is beautiful area. It is my birth place and I came back to work and live here from our capital town. I live in Slovakia very near this mountains called High Tatras. The highest pick is Gerlachovsky pick with his 2655 metres above see level. It is great place for doing all kinds of sports. You are welcomed to visit here anytime. Just ping me before and I will figure out some program for you :D.

  8. Dear fellow modeleres,

hello again. To much happening right now, but still time spent in my workshop is precious for me. It is so peacefull in there. With my wife we are going to sign mortgage loan for our piece of dream land on Friday. Hope everything will go well. Maybe after I will post some pictures from it for you.

But back to my build. Finally I have finished belt A and belt C of my hull planking. Still belt B to be planked. As the place to be planked is differnet on every bulkhead I started using proper method of planking :D. Firstly I measured widths on every bulkhead. Transfer it to width plank paper and find out the width of each plank. Here is the process.

    20200531_110105.thumb.jpg.513c7e75ea89cc4e3c2c509ac0822b16.jpg

I am planning to do the second layer similar with the first execpt errors of course and the lenght of planks will be maximum of 10 cm.

    Here are pictures of progress.

    20200531_103018.thumb.jpg.cb3d88074c2ef94cff90902f77d6ec14.jpg20200531_103047.thumb.jpg.39d1153d7b1200bd8f1b7de0bc9021b9.jpg20200531_103038.thumb.jpg.3395225a9aee955587989d06bdab6212.jpg20200531_103015.thumb.jpg.c2ad36f0e30e7437ef078f826ea8b144.jpg

I also successfully glued the planks above waterways. As the walnut plank was more thick I used steam and hot water to bend it properly. Th walnut is not so high quality but after using some putty and fine sand paper result is nice looking. Here are pictures.

    Till next time my friends.

  9. Dear fellow modelers,

again some progress in planking of the hull. In the pictures you can see the progress. I also added first stealers from both sides. Hope will finnish very soon with first layer of planking. I also glued the first spirketing plank (first plank above waterway from inside) on left side.

Here are some pictures from progress.

  10. Dear Fellow modelers,

I am back again. A lot of new things are happening in my life. With my wife, we are going to buy piece of land here near my hometown, so lot of dealing with banks.

Therefore I did not had lot of time for building, but still there was little bit of progress.

    20200513_193241.thumb.jpg.5df17126fe8975318bb0a4b4cb9c5f17.jpg20200513_193256.thumb.jpg.5783dbe9390d3c625ac7826cd7f44475.jpg20200513_193304.thumb.jpg.fafd22e0907babbf513d43633be6014e.jpg20200513_193315.thumb.jpg.912a2004735d0358010d007747443935.jpg20200513_193330.thumb.jpg.494a8de7e4c1440e99f7a2ac529d2c7c.jpg20200513_193339.thumb.jpg.b229c04b0f435850b8289f241eefe618.jpg

In following pictures you can see how I progressed. I already finished belt A. I decided to continue with gardboard, anf finish the belt C, after that I will do belt B.

I also made progress on launching ways. I nearly finished building them. I decided to paint it with cherry varnish. I also used brass wire to make nails.20200513_194522.thumb.jpg.3ef8364e212e27703d39c08d389f36f9.jpg20200513_194513.thumb.jpg.1910afd2c1f164e96435f81e4c4603da.jpg20200513_194536.thumb.jpg.b519041d613ef537897682ce9c019011.jpg

I also steamed and fitted first plank from inside of deck. It is just rought fit.

In addition to Ryland’s comments:  Are you soaking the planks, hard to see but looks some of the warping may be due to too much soaking, or perhaps your fairing is off.  Your tapering also seems, by this point there should be much more taper there by that point. The link Ryland provided addresses both issues.

You can make up a lot with sanding and filler on the first planking, but as you said you want the first planking to be practice for the second.

I am steaming the planks in my home made steamer. As I wrote the mistake probably occured when I was cutting the plank. I am trying to follow the plans in tapering of planks. For second layer I need to draw everything.

Just a point. After planks are steamed I pin them to hull until they are dry so I am not working with wet wood and they keep the flow.

  12. 43 minutes ago, Ryland Craze said:

Assuming this hull is to be doubled planked, I would smooth the run of the bottom plank along the bulkheads G to L.  This could be accomplished by taking a small amount off of the bottom plank where it dips down.  The problem lies with the plank above the bottom plank.  If the hull is to be singled planked, I would remove the last two planks installed and start over.  You should definitely consider lining off the hull using the procedures in the links below.  This would prevent this type of error.

Chapter Two of the Medway Longboat instructions also explains the process of lining off the hull.

    https://www.syrenshipmodelcompany.com/medway-longboat-1742.php

The link to the download of Chapter Two is located about midway down the page.

    I hope this helps.

Yes thank you very much. It was helpful. Basically I did it but the problem appeard when I was cutting the plank. I did not notice the narrow place of the plank and continued. Anyway it does not matter as it will be double planked. I just need to somehow add more wood to next plank. I will use compasses to trace exact flow of upper plank and make some test fitting to make it alright. I  am trying to do the first layer as it is one one layer build in order to train. Now I know that preparation is more important and will do it for second layer.

  13. Hi guys,

I have one question. There is one small issue with planking and I would like some advice.

Here are two pictures of side of ship. There is small warp on one side - blue color. How this occuer is basically I am sanding planks by hand, so imperfection. The important question is how I should repait it?

    This side is OK.

    20200425_171227.thumb.jpg.3fce03e77d739bd4ae8e7ccda85a6dcb.jpg

    Here is the issue:

    Any advice?

  14. Dear fellow modelers,

...step by step plank by plank it is going.

Here is a picture from forming the planks. Before I started I thought that plank will fit as they are, small mistake :D. Every one of them require lot of work. Every plank was measured on every bulkhead and cut with scalpel.

    20200424_181048.thumb.jpg.8e2ace1bd6d22fc8ebe3dce40c43c905.jpg20200424_182441.thumb.jpg.f5c80aad7a8ce9e6d69d1fe33c3ce949.jpg

Today I was staring at plans in my workshop for 2 hours. Finally I understood that this is not real width of planks because this is side look - blue color. Do not mind red color, it is from before. What I will do I will measure start and end of plank because there is perfect detail in plans and the rest of the plank will be just my good feel of plank flow.

    Thanks for all the likes.

  15. Dear fellow modelers,

yesterday was again blast in my workshop. What I did for few last days was that I was preparing myself for next step. Planking below the wale. I read lot of materials how to do it. But what I found was that basically when I will use provided plans and trim every plank according to it, it will work and I do not need to do any calculations. :D It will be time consuming but that is it.

So what I did was trimmed the first plank below wale. I used my steamer for bending of the wood. There is one disadvantage that I need to let the wood dry on the ship. Still it have taken 3 hours to do that. Step by step, plank by plank :D. Here are pictures of planks.

    20200423_192136.thumb.jpg.a336b21b7277217153d623d4a2254872.jpg20200423_192154.thumb.jpg.73d0f6235723c3cfd6fe8dfee86e4968.jpg

I also added the shimmin plank to stern part under taffrail and sanded it flush. Here are pictures from process.

    Happy with the result.

    Total building time 113 hours.

    Till next time.

  16. Dear fellow modelers,

tommorow is my birthday. I will be 31 :D. Yesterday and today I wanted to do a lot of modeling, but as is alway go you plan something and something completely different will happen. But it was also a blast :D.

Wiring of lights in my workshop went off. I do  not know why. I have never worked with electric wiring before but after few hours and one telephone call to my friend I was able to repair it. It is so satisfying when something works even when it the end it was pretty easy.

Still I was able to work 2 hours on the ship. Step by step, plank by plank I am continuing. Here are some pictures.

    20200418_164719.thumb.jpg.d51ce8b246f28ad3e1a4e69e8dbdde67.jpg20200419_112135.thumb.jpg.0a55d146c117b62c49fc862ca4b6db44.jpg

You can see I finished the top planking. Now I will start with big boy stuff and actual planking of the ship :D.

I also added tops of cannon opennings. Here is a picture.

    20200419_115516.thumb.jpg.cf2e8958e7e453f5413c23bde45ef2de.jpg

I found one error. In the picture below you can see that shim below of taffrail is not flush. I wan to add some more shim and somehow sand it flush.

    1587295195854.png.08e53de80ec764fcb24c144f0acdbeb1.png

I have one question for you. Is it better to add wood putty at fist and then sand it or sand it little first and then add putty and sand it again?

Last picture is from yesterday bike trip. Enjoy.

    20200417_171825.thumb.jpg.f5fa878689518a6cf2cb7fb54540a567.jpg

    Till next time.

Total hours spent on project 109.

  17. Dear fellow modelers,

building is going very slowly. Every plank is like stand alone project. I am following the plans.

From now I am trying to use only PVA glue as it is better for fitting the planks. When I started with CA glue there were visible spaces between planks.

Here are some pictures form progress.

This is picture of part of the ship I am currently working on.

    1587025165821.png.d5146a0eabcfe19db27b504d34e6cc35.png

    And here is the progress.

    20200415_190245.thumb.jpg.1c7e9ae05921f8fb33027f4013623b4c.jpg

As there is some time between glueing the planks with PVA glue, so I started with making of stand for the ship. I did not like the one which was in the plans.

    1587025445937.png.dcb8a29a49dd5ceb4ccf81fbed7236bd.png

I liked more the one on the cover of the manual.

    20200415_190320.thumb.jpg.824c6762f8356a2b8d408c5d0f19a08b.jpg

So I started with building it. Firstly I started to sand everything. Then choose the lenght of small pallets 5 cm and glued first two together.

  18. Dear fellow modelers,

today was perfect day. Beautiful warm weather, few hours in workshop, spent some time with wife and biking.

Here is picture of colored walnut scrap wood. Everything was sanded up to 400. Used black color and then danish oil on it. I like it very much.

    Till next time.

  19. Dear fellow modelers,

yesterday was again a blast in my workshop. Doing a lot of things at ones. I am trying my revel colors and danish oil on wood. It is looking pretty good. I will post pictures later.

I am finishing with 1st layer of planking for upper layer. I also filled filler parts for openings between internal and external layers of planking. Firstly fillers between external planking and waterways and then opening for sweep ports. Here are some pictures from process.

Here is planking from bow part.

For first layer I will use the walnut planks from kit. I want to do the contrast color I have seen on build from JpR62 and it looked awesome. What I mean by that is I will use brass wood for second layer, only for one plank.

Total building time 105 hours. I crossed that 100 hour line yesterday :D.

    Till next time.

  20. Dear fellow modeleres,

again quick update from my workshop. I was able to start with some planking. Here are some pictures. For the bow part I needed to steam planks little bit to be able to fit them properly. I am using CA glue for gluing. It is fast but some errors occured. Little bit of putty will manage it.

It is funny because when I finished wateraways I was also finishing mind objective set on the beginning. Now when I am starting with planking it is like starting new project from scratch. .

I was also thinking about coloring some parts. Probably inside of the ship will be red, also cannon openings will be red. Wale, strake and fasion pieces on stern will be black. I need to experiment with color and danish oil a little bit but I think it will work for me like that.

    Till next time.
