Papa reacted to popeye the sailor in MPC steam locomotive "The General" 1:25 scale by Popeye the Sailor - finished
here are the gallery pictures. a huge thanks to all who followed along, and for all the suggestions you all gave. they were a big help. thanks to you as well Ken for your persistence about the wood.......the plastic parts that would have made up the wood load are languishing at the dump as we speak I'm glad I decided to take the plunge, and do it.......I like it so much better it came with it's own plaque........I was going to write Popeye on it, but posterity wouldn't know me from a hole in the wall, if I did
the reflection from everything around it make sit hard to read: Denis J. Wenzel
I don't even recall showing a picture of the head lamp in place
I had fun building him.......uncovered a couple of quirks along the way. should anyone build this model, be sure to use very flexible hoses. again.......thanks to all who followed along

Papa reacted to abelson in Fair American by abelson - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Scale 1:48 - second wooden ship build
Continuing with the build, just a note on the keel. I should have pinned the keel because it became detached at some point in the built. I basically followed the instructional manual but improvised it. I beveled the bulkheads before installing and cut the rabbit. After placing the bulkheads, I proceeded with the bow and stern filler blocks. These were tricky and very time consuming. Being able to see 3-dimesionally is a must for these. I didn’t find the Buttlock L&M templates to be helpful.
I made the transom frame in one complete piece, glued it in place, and then glued on the counter planking. One mistake I made here was setting the widow frames too low -no big deal, part of improvising. I filled the minor spaces between planks with natural wood filler which I have found to be invaluable.
After making the hatch coamings, I turned my attention to the gun port framing. With that complete, I painted the hatch coamings, installed the grating, and glued coamings in-place. Next, installed and painted the waterway, and house front, the fancy rail and cap, main deck thick plank, and main deck outer plank, quarter deck, transom forward side plank, and the transom cap. At this point, I'm about 4 weeks into the build. Ready for inboard and outboard bulwark planks.

OK...here's a few for you. Camera shots, unfortunately, show a few years of dust. Oh well. Looking back I probably used Titebond and ACC.

More work completed on the main cabin...amazing how the camera picks up all of the imperfections! Ah well, certainly worth the time...
FYI...it’s only put together for the picture

Papa reacted to CDW in "Everything is Go!" Mercury Capsule and Atlas Booster by CDW - FINISHED - Atlantis - PLASTIC
This will be my final installment and pics for the Atlas-Mercury Friendship 7 Everything is Go project.
I am certain there are many details and wonderful extras that could be added to make this an even more remarkable model, but I am going to call this one finished. It's brought back a flood of good old memories and I have had lots of fun building and painting it but I'm ready to move along to something else now.
I have a huge 1:35 scale WW2 German Locomotive I need to finish so hope to finish that one next. Stay tuned for more fun.

Papa reacted to Richmond in Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien by Richmond - Tamiya - 1/48 - PLASTIC
Here is something I am working on apart from ships.
Here is the work I have done so far on the cockpit
All spray work is 50/50 Tamiya and Mr Colour Levelling Thinner
Hand paint is Tamiya and Tamiya Retarder - I am currently building up stock of Citadel paints for future hand paint work as I can get these locally
All metallics are dry brushed, again I am using Tamiya - however I will be using AK Extreme for the main paintwork.
The dials are done using in box decals with a drop of Tamiya clear on top - so I didn't have to hand paint them (thankfully)
Once I have touched up some of the paintwork - I will do some pin wash weathering (Tamiya again )
I probably need to do further clean up of the clear part of the gun sight with some IPA however its fiddly work.
I am going open cockpit with a pilot - so most of this detail will be lost

Papa reacted to Retired guy in Bluenose by Retired guy - Model Shipways - scale 1:64
Continuing planking I measured each bulkhead to batten so that I knew how much to taper each plank
Used Jim Byrnes disc sander to do all tapers fantastic machine (all his machines are fantastic) once I got close to the batten I had to taper sides as well this prevented gaps between planks
Each plank could be bent and laid onto bulkheads with out using clamps,
You can see the dimensions of the tapers from inside
Lot of fun doing the planking
Regards
Richard

Papa reacted to Retired guy in Bluenose by Retired guy - Model Shipways - scale 1:64
Thanks very much everyone for your likes do appreciate them.
Installation of he Knighthead and Hawse timbers was up next, did install on an angle as per the real ship
Then started to put together the main rail, traced the shapes from the drawings and relayed to wide strip of wood all edges were then sanded round at this time
Drill and pined but did not glue yet, also made sure I had enough bend in the stern rail
Then took the main rail off and installed fake stanchions, used the main rail to check heights and angles as I installed
Each fake Stanchion was made to fit the curves of the ship so none were made square except the middle ones
Regards
Richard

Buyers are out there and I have had moderate success selling built items I don't want to hang on to. There will be some things from time to time that buyers just are not interested in buying, but for the most part, everything I advertised sold for a buy-it-now price. Bear in mind, I make my kit/paint investment back with some cushion but in no way does it compensate for the hours spent in building the items.
As an example, I sold this model for $275. I had about $120 invested with the kit and paints.

In the process of smoothing the planking and filling in hollow spots. Just under 4 months since I started the planking and I was in Colorado for a month so nothing was done in the shipyard.

I sanded the planks above the plank shear smooth as well as sanding the existing plank shear flush to the planks. In the photo a new ersatz plank shear is being glued on.

Papa got a reaction from tarbrush in City of Pekin by Papa - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:96 - Yellow Box kit
I am making progress on the deck furnishings as I smooth the hull of the C W Morgan (which build log will be updated in a few days). The stairway on the engine room, which goes to the yet to be built pilot house, was quite a challenge.

Papa reacted to Rafael in Armed Launch by Rafael - FINISHED - Mantua - 1:16
Hello.
My name is Rafael, I am from Russia, the city of Rostov-on-Don.
I finished this model from Mantua, construction has been going on since the beginning of 2018.
The blue-green “backing” is an element of the future case, still in the manufacturing process.
I decided to move away from the toy look, which is offered by the manufacturer and in which previously built models of this set were presented, there was a desire to make a more realistic image.
Therefore, all brass parts (staples, rings, falconets and a gun) were blackened, steel parts burned.
In the work I used stains for nuts (hull, mast, sensible things and oars) and for mahogany (runners, carriages). I bought the cheapest in a hardware supermarket. Black details (planshire, etc.) were painted with Tamiya black acrylic paint, the underwater part and oars were painted with white Tamiya paint.
I didn’t like the native threads for rigging, I bought it separately.
Sail sewed himself, took information from everywhere. The native instruction on it practically does not give any sensible information.
