I know what you mean, but I don't know the answer. I think it depends on the relative positions of the block to the rail. Maybe also just the preference of the crew or the officers in charge? I would go with the left version of your drawing.

Who uses nails?
DonSangria replied to bigcreekdad's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
I used temporary nails to hold the planks of the first layer of planking. After the glue dried, i removed the nails. The resulting hole is afterwards covered by the second planking. For me it was a good solution and easy to acomplish. -
Question about Symbol on building mast
DonSangria replied to ChuckP's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
I think the letters refer to another view of the mast. Figute A should be a depiction of the mast vrom the front and figure B the view of the mast on the indicated hight form above. -
I think whitout a sail, the tack and sheets would not be rigged. Maybe this helps:

I think i varnished the hull at the step where you are now without any problems later on. Your build looks really nice so far! :)

Yes, the hammocks... I don't like them in this kit. Since it is my first build, I realized too late, that these should depict hammocks. For me it was just a decoration of the bulwarks. It is too late to change, since I'm in the process of rigging.

The Kit shows the Ship after the 1831 refit for Darwins voyage. In 1820 she was launched 2-masted and later refitted with a third mast.

Congratulations! Looks really nice! Also thank you for the tipps for others who build this kit like me. The leftover picture is a nice help to give me an idea where the shortages lie. how many blocks do you have left?

Cutty Sark spanker, spencer and staysails rigging
DonSangria replied to Bruma's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Regarding your third question: If the sails aren't used regularly, i think they would have been set only if needed to reduce wear. If they were used often they were furled like in the picture. I couldn't find a better picture sadly. Nevertheless I hope this helps.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
