Matrim reacted to ccoyle in Newbie just starting needing help
Hmm -- that's an interesting photo. It's curious that this was called a Schnellbaukasten, or "quick-build kit", considering that one has to cut out the printed parts. Typically, "quick build" (one also sees "weekender" kits on the market) means that a kit is a simplified design intended to make construction easier at the expense of fidelity to the subject. In this case, the subject is a flight of fancy, since the makers are conflating the terms "pirate" and "slaver". Either way, the hull form doesn't look right for the 1840s.
Enjoy building this little bit of modeling history -- I'll be interested to see how it turns out.
Cheers!

Matrim reacted to BANYAN in Mast Document Translation
Hi Druxey, I read that as Main Mast above the deck 24? Asto the extension, this may relate to an extension of the head, but your ship may be a little early for that. Mid-19th C ships had extensions added to make them "Taunt" as described by Kipping and Fincham (that is tall). However, if we interpret the above deck measurement as being from the partners to the hounds (which is standard), the extension may be referring to the 'head' or doubling?
cheers

I agree with Banyan's interpretation of the "p" and the "r".
Looks like
"length of the sprit 31.10" (31 ft 10 inches?)
Then "(something) of the deck 24"
"below 5.3"
"(extension?) of head 29.3 +2 = 31.3"
"(Head?) 5.3"
"New Mark 36.8"
"length of the sprit 31.10"

Matrim got a reaction from Canute in Book Donation to Group (other)
Shifted to traders though the topic does not truly fit here or in books. It may be useful to list the books so people know what they are plus a general idea where you are based as (for example) is you are UK based and a US group wants them then shipping would be horrendous.
Note this topic which does exactly that..

That's lucky though it may be more amusing to bet on how long the log lasts before I throw all my toys out of the pram and start again erm again..

After using my vast mod powers to merge together both the plan generation topics and the first build attempt topic (and in the process making the last eight pages utterly unreadable. I shall now wave my magic wand and transfer this to the scratch build section as I am just about ready to make attempt 356 at this build. With due sense of dread and fear.
For the next month or so I just plan on deciding on scale, materials and structure (and tidying the workshop) before starting cutting into wood around spring.
I will therefore be indecisive about all those decisions to the probable fury of anyone trying to follow along.

Onwards and upwards! Anyway I have adjusted the stem closer to Druxeys ever helpfull hints and have moved onto the rear deadwood. This is just a first attempt as I may play around with the tops of the sternposts slightly as I dont think I have enough detail on the plans to make an accurate attempt. The wing transom also looks a bit severe to my eyes but it is supposed to be at an angle so I may just have to check things through.

I like TurboCad. The version under a hundred quid does fine at any ship plan cad work.

Matrim reacted to MEDDO in What scale works best?
I can never remember where I saw this but I do remember seeing a first or second rate full quarter scale presented like this. The model had just lower mast and the shrouds and ratlines placed. All of the yards and the topmasts along with all the appropriate anchors were made in complete detail and presented on the ground beside the ship. It was a very impressive display

Matrim reacted to wefalck in What scale works best?
Well, my wife made it very clear, before we got married: models only in my study ... which really limits me to small sized models. This can mean either a larger ship at smaller scale, or a smaller boat at larger scale. For convenience sake, I limit the size of my models in a way that the profile drawing/side elevation fits onto an A4 paper, which means that I can print the drawings off an ordinary laser-printer.
As I like to display the models in an appropriate environment, I prefer 'railway model'-scales, because of the figurines available commercially (usually from German company Preiser). This means 1:160 for larger ships and 1:87 for boats.
