Those are fine looking guns there Bug 👏 Particularly like the additional details for the quoin handles and simulated bolts and so on. Good tip on removing laser char, very neat work. 👍

You going great guns Dave, you have lapped me, you already nearly up to the same point I am still at on my Bounty and to think I have a CC Endeavour that has been gathering dust for the thick end of ten years, puts me to shame!

Happy retirement Dave! 👍 A very tidy workbench and with your woodworking skills to build guitars, think you should have no problems with model boats. But think you might need some smaller tools! 😆

Further update on the Mizzen mast, nearing completion, just needs another fine sand/fill and coat of paint I think and varnish the stained dowels. The walnut veneer used for the tops is very brittle and flakey, little lumps keep coming out when drilling or even sanding, annoying. The mast has been dry assembled and fitted to the hull to test the fit etc. Shaped the octagonal doubling portion of the upper mast by first filing square, then adding some thin wood strips, then filing back octagonal to match the drawings in McKay's AOTS book. Masthead reinforcement bands are done with black card. Thanks for looking in!

Hi Pete, one tip I have picked up and used when having to paint a masked edge that might 'bleed' is to pre-paint the taped edge with a thin varnish first to seal it. But not always necessary when using good quality tapes like Tamiya. But a tip that's has been successful for me in the past.

Petrejus describes the gammoning being laid from aft to forward, the first resting against small cleats on the bowsprit to stop them slipping back. Every turn being "nippered" (seized) to the proceeding one (probable not need at 1/72nd scale!) At every turn the gammoning crossed itself halfway down, so it looked "hour-glass" shaped. Middle tied by horizontal turns (same number as passed around the bowsprit. Hope that helps? Hopefully the Vanguard model has a slot for the gammoning below the bowsprit?

Hi Ian, E. W. Petraeus describes gammoning the bowsprit in his 1970 book "Modelling the Brig-of-War IRENE" Attached are a couple of pictures, from that section of the book, might help (hopefully not infringed copyright for these two sample pics!)

Proxxon TSG 250/E disc sander

Let me know how you get on with it Dave and what you think of using it, I am thinking of acquiring a few workshop power tools and a disc sander and pillar drill are top of the list, so any feedback on these would be great. 👍 -
Just a little update for tonight, working on the mizzen top, made the handrail. Kit notes/plans call for 1.5mm square stock to make the stanchions and handrail, but again following McKay as close as I can used some 1mm strip and pins. Simulated the stanchion to handrail clamps with card.

I got some additional decals from Xtradecal, with some generic numbers and letters, so not too difficult to replicate "my" Chipmunk.

Yes I have one of those, it is fine initially, but then I have found the blade starts cutting a groove into the plastic bed, not sure how long it is going to last, or if there is something better out there.

A little further update about the masts and yards, I'm working on at the moment. Got all the yards and Stunsail booms built, just in the process of final sanding, painting/staining now, will post an update of these later. Started work on the Mizzen mast, trying to match as closely as possible to the the dimensions and shapes given in McKays' AOTS book, well as closely as my skill will allow. As I have generally found now on this stage of the build, the masts, yards and other mast components are all over scale in the kit parts, so where I can I have reduced these to McKay's dimension; see comparison of the mizzen mast caps as an example. I can see from a practical reason why these are provided larger in kit form, just hope I am not storing up future problems for myself when I come to rig this lot! Thanks again for looking in and for the "likes".

I think it would be a shame to cover up your boat detail, I know you are doing a "Dystopian" take on your build, but think most boat covers were painted canvas, so a "mucky" linen colour if you showing your Bounty as it would have looked long after the mutiny, unless the mutineers had replaced that with whale skins? 😅 -

Hello all, As a break from building my Bounty, I have completed a little project that I've had in mind to do for years. Have always wanted to build a model of a De Havilland Chipmunk T.10 trainer that I had my first flight in as an Air Cadet at the age of 14! This year's new 1/48 scale release by Airfix was the excuse I had been waiting for. A fairly straightforward build, only 'tricky' bit I found was the construction of the canopy, which came in several parts. The actual aircraft "WG407" is still in existence and I think airworthy, based in Cambridgeshire; now in private hands. My little certificate I got for completing my first flight also pictured, my flight took place at RAF Finningley (now Doncaster Airport) with No.9 Air Experience flight based there.

Pin pusher. Help please

Snap! - I also just can't use pin pushers like the one shown at the top, the hole diameter seems too big and the pin either goes in at an angle or bends, or flies out, never to be seen again! 🛸 Or it could be I'm useless with some tools..... 🤣 -

You are making great progress Gct86! 👍 I really like the copper weathering effect you have done, I tried similar on my Bounty using white vinegar and salt, but I see you have used a commercial product, what was it like to work with? -
Does anyone out there in MSW know the dimensions of the hammocks and what was the "standard" way of folding them? I assume the was a "proper" way they were stowed. Looking at the many examples on MSW, they appeared to be rolled length-ways and folded in half? Just thinking of maybe adding some to my Bounty, not that I know where they would have been stowed on a small vessel like Bounty. 🤔
