Andy> I agree, if the plans of the Fly are the best I can get, than anything with scrollwork should do just fine.

Thanks for the info about the opening, I'm glad that I do not have to widen it, 'cause a bulkhead is in the way.

    This already looks more Flyish

    Hello,
    At last an update.
Although the port side isn't finished yet, here's some pics regarding the starboardside (almost) completed with the most of the remaining fittings.
Referring to previous post regarding the channels : according to the building instructions the seperate parts are to be connected with some brass wire. As I had some trouble with the dead-eye-strops, I chose for a thread instead. This is a second best choice but I wanted the channels as straight as possible and the thread option allowed me to tighten the wole thing at my convenience.
The more is, this thread is not "fluffy" at all: (as you can see on the last pic) and the knot is well hidden behind the loop which was the result of my dead-eye-strop-replacements. Afterwards ,I overpainted the whole thing with Enamel mat black
But as I mentioned : this is a second best choice

    Hello Ray,
As you are probaly following this log, please bear in mind that the channels & main plate closest to the stern gallery are partially covering one gun port lid, the channel connection downwards can be a bit narrow.

Anyway : here's the first serie of pics

Finally finished the furled yards for the square sails.  They take quite a bit of work (literally hours per yard), but I think they will improve the overall look of the ship.

I started with the topgallants, and worked my way down.  I got to the main yard, and was like, wow, this came out pretty nice.

Then I was tying myself in knots trying to figure out how the main course was supposed to be rigged.  The instructions said it was rigged as a crossjack yard, and it didn't have all that many blocks attached.  It wasn't until I looked back at Chapelle's "Search for Speed Under Sail" which has a section on the Badger that Caldercraft's kit appears to follow closely, and with some help and guidance from Jim Lad (thanks John!) at the link below that I realized that I made a mistake in attaching a furled sail to that yard.

    http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/4120-crossjack-yard-generally-did-not-carry-a-sail/

Essentially, the Badger's main yard was a spread yard to sheet the topsails on the main mast, and the Badger also carried an improvised main course that was fitted to a crossjack of almost the same length and secured to the main mast only by halyards.  The kit instructions just have one "main yard," so I'm assuming that it accounted for the spreader yard.  So, after hours of effort on the main yard, I was left with this nice souvenir

All in all, my complaining aside, I think everything came out pretty well.  Here are the final products:

You'll see that I tried to pre-rig the lines attaching the yards to the masts and the buntlines.  I figured it would be easier to do that before the sails were added.  Since the buntlines come from the foot of the sail, I glued the line on the pre-furled sail and ran it through the appropriate block.  They should be locked in pretty right after furling.

Next up are the jibs and spanker.  Not really looking forward to doing them - the jibs need jib stays and halyards, along with extra rigging for the inhaul and outhaul (I think).  The spanker is tricky in figuring out how to cut the sail back to reduce bulk, yet leave enough in spots to be true to the brail lines.  Also, per the zu Mondfeld book, there are a number of ways of attaching the spanker to the mast, so I need to pick one and figure out how to execute it.

For the background of this display: The guncrew is busy excercising on the opposite side, so these guns are run out for symmetrical reasons and ready for combat with all tackles set. As they are left alone for the time being, the tackles are secured by a half hitch (or a overhand knot with draw-loop) and the length of the rope put over the barrel for easy grabbing. Like this the gun could go into combat within the second.

    So keep on dreaming ...

Here just for the scales sake :-)

Here's  where I'm up to at the moment. Can't think of much else that needs
doing on the decks. I might put a couple of carronades on the forecastle.
Not made my mind up yet.

Thanks for the interest, Ben and Kurt. But that's enough of Flying Fish for some months.

Back to business on Essex. A small update. I've installed the wale on the port side ( the stern still needs to trimmed). The wale is made of three strakes of boxwood. Later, it will be painted black. Now it's back to the starboard side and maybe some stern planking.

Next cleared up the breeching ropes on both sides ...

    ... especially the loop ...

... and also looked at both sides that the ropes won´t be stuck underneath the wheels.

    Then checked the length ...

... and Jan was right, here comes Captain Hook ...

... and have him installed in all his glory.
