  1. It required lots cutting, but all of those "arched" openings give it great character. Nice work. Mike
  2. Man O Man. That is quite a change in appearance since the previous photos. Now it's an Ab Hoving ship. Looking forward to your photographer doing his work with this. Mike
  3. It is always fun to “speculate” about old photos. Several observations: The woman and the man to her right are formally dressed, so I assume they are together with the car. The other two figures back further may be workers on the boat. The photographer did not catch them unaware. They are all looking at the camera. Finally, this photo gives the impression that this is a ferry, rather than a supply boat. Looks like the car is ready to disembark. Mike
  4. QUOTE: “In my analysis of the painting, it has become increasingly clear that while the depiction appears to be perspectively correct, it is not. The optical foreshortening and the vanishing point perspective, as well as the perspective of the bow and the stern, cannot be reconciled.” ALVB Hello ALVB, To me, it is fun to see this attempt to create the carrack in this painting, despite the fact that the image in the painting does not have the correct perspective. There are many details on the painting that will need to be corrected to produce a realistic model. I think the important point is the “inspiration” this painting provides to inspire the builder to create the best rendition his skills will allow. You are entitled to some artistic license with this project. I hope you have fun with it. Mike
  5. I enjoy reading your notes about the process of making all the decisions. Looks like you have not yet decided to include guns. If you do, will the gun-barrels be made of card, paper or something else? Mike
  6. Quote: ……. “I was deeply impressed by the movie about Bob Dylan. My youth passed by. What a fantastic film and what a fantastic actor and what a fantastic singer/songwriter... I have been a fan ever since The times they are a changing. 1964?” …………. Ab Hoving Yes. If I recall correctly, "The Times They Are a-Changin'." Was written by Bob Dylan and recorded by him in 1964. Following up on that, it was then recorded by a group called “The Byrds”, in 1965. They were known for singing many of Bob’s songs, but in their own unique style (I preferred their version). Mike
  7. Fascinating . . . very detailed and dedicated work. Mike
  8. I noticed several aircraft and a ship that you pulled out of your archive . . this one from seventeen years ago. This is my favorite. Looks like the old camera did quite well. The photos look good as does the work. Thanks for sharing these with us. Mike
  9. Thank you Alexander. The information you provided is very helpful. I will continue to watch your beautiful creations. Greetings, Mike
  10. Hello, I enjoyed reading your posts and seeing your carving work. What are your favorite tools for carving Tagua nut? Thank You, Mike
  11. All those drawings add up to plenty of inspiration. The copy of the Van de Velde grisaille “enlarges” nicely. It has an enormous amount of detail. Back to your model ………… you are a quick builder. Looks like the gold leaf will work out well. Mike
  12. Excellent review Chris. For card modelers . . . a bargain for the price. Mike p.s. Where do you recommend as the best place to purchase it?
  13. That is a very nice photo. I think perhaps this has become the most famous shipwreck on the Great Lakes, helped along and memorialized by Gordon Lightfoot’s song.
  14. Regarding the “Admiral”: You are lucky to have someone in charge who is ordering more of your ships. I salute the “Admiral”. Mike
  15. I don’t build wood sailing vessels so I am no expert. But, I don’t think it can be done any cleaner than this. I am curious about one thing: Since joining this site, I noticed there are quite a few Winchelseas being built. What make ship a popular choice? Mike
  16. Your question triggered some thoughts. Why do I model? It shows me that despite my age, I am really still a kid. There is a thrill in inventing new ways of doing things. It is gratifying to know, my current project is better than the last, but not as good as the next. The struggle for perfection is motivating, though I will never get there. Regards, Mike
  17. Well said. I have been looking for those words to describe Ab's work. Thank You.
  18. I do the same thing. Sometimes, for small spars I can roll them from paper. But most of them I make out of wood, and they are well suited for rigging.
  19. That photo proves it. Positioned on the stern, the carving looks even better.
