  1. Hello Peter, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. John
  2. Until extremely recently most seamen couldn't swim. In the days of sail the ability to swim was considered by some seamen to be a disadvantage as there was very little chance of being picked up if you fell overbouard and it was thought that if you couldn't swim you'd drown quicker and get it over with. The storekeeper on my first ship was a Pommie seaman who couldn't swim a stoke. He said that as he had been torpedoed and sunk three times during the Battle of the Atlantic and survived he couldn't see the point! One of his favourite sayings was, "I went to sea to go on it, not to be in the b****y stuff"! John
  3. The forecastle is looking good Kevin. Perhaps the drum ends on the winch could be a bit shorter. John

  6. Keith, would tight rolls of different coloured paper in the different holes work? No design would be needed. John
  7. I trust the flags in that flag locker will be proper code flags made to scale and then 'made up' to fit the locker. John
  8. Goodwin gives the width of the garboard strake as 2/3 the moulded depth of the keel for building after 1700. I don't know whether that's helpful or more confusing. I've always treated the garboard as 'just another strake of planking', but then I've never built a model of anything as early as the 'Great Harry'. Perhaps a study of the 'Vasa' might give a few clues. John
