  7. She's coming along very nicely. Druxey's advise is excellent - don't be tempted to skimp on this stage of the work. John
  8. Looks good, Pat, and I like the idea of a brass binnacle cover if it can be done. Re the bell; who would be responsible for ringing it on a Grey Funnel Line ship? That would determine the location. John
  9. Great to see an update, Pat. More lovely work. John
  10. You're really making progress with this on, mate. She's going to look first class when all those 'bits and bobs' finally get fitted. John
  11. Sorry, somehow I missed your question on Monday. As an interesting conundrum for you, two of the best known photos of 'Cutty Sark' during her working life show the spencer gaff on the main - these are the photos of her under sail at sea and the detail of her alongside at Circular Quay in Sydney. Conversely, the other well known photo of her at anchor in Sydney harbour does show the spencer gaff, so take your pick! There would certainly be a downhaul for the head of the spanker, but the practice on furling seems to have been to leave the head of the sail stretched on the gaff and simply furl it by brailing up - the brails being sufficient to control the sail unless in very heavy weather it was found necessary to use a few temporary lashings to secure it better. Staysails were furled by simply hauling them down their respective stay to the mast and putting a lashing around them. Hope this helps. John

  13. Ian, if necessary, the sheet can simply be shackled to any convenient spot nearby. John

  15. Like Druxey, I just catching up. She really looks first class. John
  16. The reason for my question is that we used to have a red light over the chartroom table, but the wheelhouse was always in complete darkness (except for the steering compass light). John
  17. Congratulations on the completion of your atmospheric model of this little ship, Harvey. what a beauty. Not sure about the red light in the wheelhouse - is that an American thing? John
