augie got a reaction from Shazmira in 18th Century Longboat by Shaz (Robbyn) - FINISHED - Model Shipways
You're the Captain, Robbyn. Historical accuracy is one thing but your preferences carry a lot of weight. I think some of the most gorgeous models use no paint at all.....just natural wood finishes.
Take a look at the Syren by Roger and then compare it to ----- mine. I tried to follow Chuck's instructions as best I could and I think she looks fine. BUT --- if could I produce crisp woodwork like Roger I would have gone that route. Also, most of the time we see Rattlesnake with a white lower hull. But JPett is trying to lay his planking so he can leave it natural.
So think about it. And keep the TV tuned to local weather.

Your Syren is coming along very nicely Augie; haven't looked in for a while but glad I revisited. I still haven't got past the completed skeleton (still nude and waiting to be dressed with planks )
cheers

Daniel,
We know Augie's been an influence... but now he's good one? :D
Your Mercury is a seriously good-looking ship. I can't wait to see more.

Thanks Garward.
A small update I added the stern chasers tiller a couple cannons and the bowsprit. The cannons have proved easier with a draw plate. I used to turn all of them but they never came out the same size.
I must be reading Augies build log to often because i added the Syren red gunports. The color scheme i was given called for red, gold, white and black. I had them all but read and I wasn't sure where to put it so I painted the gun ports. I think it makes them pop a little more.

augie got a reaction from jdbradford in US Brig Syren by Augie - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
The carronades were mounted on the sleds and set on the deck temporarily.
Once satisfied, the carronades were permanently mounted and the breech ropes attached. I could not manage the gun tackles this time around.
Deck fitting were begun with hatches, shot racks and the capstan.
This was followed by the companionway and the binnacle/belfry.

David- don't worry about the time. I'm really slow myself. Just think of it as getting your money's worth

I take this opportunity to wish you a good journey on your longboat. With Chuck's design and your skills she should prove to be fabulous. I'll pull up a chair.
Oh.....batten the hatches over there. We've had some crazy weather the past two days and it's heading your way.
Stay safe.

augie reacted to SkerryAmp in Mayflower by SkerryAmp - Model Shipways - 5/32" = 1'
Thanks all! I was pleased with how it came out - wasn't sure, but am happy with the results. Am working the rest of the deck currently and should have another update soon. Once I get the decks all laid in I will definitely be oiling and sealing to make it pop a bit.
The mix was nice, looks even better in person so not only did I jot down the ratio but also made up a "batch" that should last a while
As for having fun? A B S O F R I G G I N L U T E L Y
Love this stuff!
Will love it more when I get a bit more skill under my belt but in time, oh yes - in time

Thanks Guys,
It feels good to do something.
Tomorrow I have one day off work so making dust again
I hope tomorrow I can make all the samson posts.
Only 21 to go…….
I want to use the milling machine ,but I can only mill horizontal and not vertical.
So thats all hand made!
It keeps me of the street…...

OK, I'm BACK!!!!!!!! The relatives have headed back East with Syren none the worse for wear. She did manage to survive a Tsunami started by an errant can of Coke. Whew
But you folks have been having so much fun in my absence that I feel I must contribute something --- even a minor update.
So here are the mainmast lower yard buntlines and falls. Yes, they're hard to see.
I know I promised an overview shot but I want to finish the buntlines on the foremast first and set the next yards.
And tomorrow I simply MUST go catch some fish
But it's great to be back tying knots and herding the spiders !

augie reacted to gjdale in Le Mirage by Sjors - FINISHED - Corel - Wood - 1:75
Wise move Sjors. It comes to us all at some point. The smart ones know when to put it away for a while and come back with a renewed enthusiasm and vigour to the build. Last time I did that, it took six years to re-start. Having a second build to play with is probably a better option! Of course, this could all be just a ruse on your part - an excuse to put off doing the ratlines! :D
Now, put the scalpel on the table, keep your hands where we can see them, and step away from the ship Sir! I said step away from the ship Sir!!!

augie reacted to popeye the sailor in San Felipe by newbuilder101 (Sherry) – Scale 1:96
just the mere fact that you've chosen to build such a large scratch build as this, is awe inspiringring enough. there are many ship kits out there that may not be historicaly correct......but we build them any way. some choose to change them.....some don't. what you've done so far is wonderful.......the deck looks superb. the hull looks so sleek.......hard to believe that you've pulled it off using balsa {just writing the name makes me shiver} I'm going to be picking back up on my first full rigged ship.....I'll admit it, I am rather daunted...I've never done one in wood before. I'm finding that plastic was much easier....these I've done many. I'll think of what your going to face as I do it.....the thought alone will be a great motivator

Mobbsie,
While I still feel it's a sin to cover that beautiful planking, I'll be here pulling for you on the coppering. A lot of plates but I don't think you would have started this if you didn't think you could master the challenge.

Some more pictures; some more ratlines. As my last two models didn't have any ratlines, I'd forgotten just how many there were even on a single masted ship!
Here's where we are at the moment.
One side finished -
And a good start made on the other side.

augie reacted to rafine in Triton cross section 1:48 by rafine
I'm back from two weeks away and really eager to get back to the model. Prior to leaving, I had done the wales on both sides with ebony. Upon my return, I did one side of the lower planking, using holly. Caulking is simulated with pencil on one edge and the joint end of each plank. I did the planking in groups of four strakes and then trimmed the ends and did a first sanding after each group. I'm trying to decide whether to treenail this side now or to plank the other side and then treenail both sides. My real first choice would be to have the treenails magically appear without my having to do them.

With Frank getting back on his feet and Sjors turning his attention to the Spanish fleet, I thought it would be a good time for a small update with some long promised photos.
The main and fore lower yards have been completed with the exception of the braces and sheets as I would surely entangle myself if those were in place. The spaghetti all over the deck are those ropes ready to be deployed later.
The main and fore topsail yards have been pinned in place and are ready to be rigged. We'll set the rigging spiders loose after celebrating the Memorial Day holiday here in the US.
I gotta tell ya that this rigging is a slow process but I haven't had so much fun since........planking......or was it coppering?

I think all model makers make good pack rats, Popeye. You never know when something will be just the sort of piece you need!

of course, that's not to say that the table doesn't get cluttered as well. at times, I barely have room to move. I'm a certified pack rat...I never throw anything away. you never know when even an oops part can be used

I don't know about a lot of water.. but since the French didn't use the chain pump, these were needed.
