  1. Hi Rich Just make sure you throw a shrimp on that barbeque Regards Ken
  2. Hi Bill Welcome to the Niagara Club We are an informal group of builders within MSW who provide support , help and encouragement to each other I am building the Niagara for the second time because my completed build was smashed in a house move Look forward to seeing your build logs Regards Ken
  3. Hi Larry Great work so far Yes the Niagara is single planking but keep in mind it is completely painted Filler and paint can hide a multitude of sins Regards Ken
  4. Hello Shurick Good start I built the LN quite a few years ago. It builds into a really elegant model with just enough decking , planking and rigging to give you a real taste for the hobby. What you learn will scale up to more complex projects, so enjoy Regards Ken
  5. Hi Rich Re your comment about re-strategizing the job hunt Could you set yourself up as a company and hire yourself out for specific projects, short term or long term? And the Niagara Club. At least in my case business and house work get in the way My next priority with the Niagara is to sand down and fill the hull. Then I can do all the painting and start adding the deck fittings. Some of which I have built already Kind Regards Ken
  6. Hi Enderwiggin Welcome to MSW I am sure we will all be interested to watch your builds given the skill set you have I would suggest you start with a kit relatively small and simple. The skills you learn will scale up to more ambitious projects. Also choose a kit with plenty of finished builds and builds underway. The experiences you share with fellow builders is a most valuable resource Good luck with whatever you choose to do Regards Ken
  7. Hi Slog PM me your email address and I will send you some photos of my Endeavour. As long as you dont insist I dust it first With the Niagara. I had put so much time and effort into the build that I couldnt just throw it out. And at the same time I knew I could do a better job so hence the purchase of a new kit and start again Regards Ken
  8. Hi Slog Good to see you back Very precise work as always. Are you still working away on site ? Regards Ken
  9. Hi Mathew Nice work I will be interested to see how the planking goes. Regards Ken
  10. Hi Larry We all need those " tidy up " days I will look forward to seeing the pictures Regards Ken
  11. Hi Mathew As Sarah says , looks good so far !! I to will follow your build with interest Regards Ken
  12. Patrick and David. Thank you for your help with the capstan. Larry Thank you for your kind words , especially about the deck. i have only laid it, sanding and tidying up still to come Regards Ken
  13. Fellow Niagara builders. I am starting to asemble the capstan The plan ( Detail 3D) shows a metal ring on the top And 2 metal strips around the top. Is the metal ring a supplied part , or how do you make it up ? I am assuming you make up the metal strips around the top from supplied strip metal Thanks for your help Ken
  14. Hi Larry I dont think it makes much difference whether you start inside or outside, port or starboard. I would probably start on the inside. Also dont forget to put in the extra supports for the deck fittings . Then you can plank the deck as well Regards Ken
  15. Hi Holty I always use a white primer, applied with a brush for small areas and masked and sprayed for bigger areas. If it does show up lumps and bumps then it gives you a chance to fix them Regards Ken
  16. Hi Evo We are in the same situation here in Australia My last 4 kits I have bought from the UK and the US I am not sure if it is the same for you but we dont pay tax in the exporting country and dont pay Australian GST. The reduction in taxes offsets the freight cost Hope that helps Regards Ken
  17. Hi Patrick. I am sure you are right about the annealed steel wire. But unless I have something suitable around the house i will use what comes with the kit Then spray with an etch primer and then black matte paint Regards Ken
  18. Hi Roger Welcome to the Niagara Club There are builds at all stages , from beginning to almost finished. You will probably find the build logs and the other members of the "club" your best resource Regards Ken
  19. Hi Joseph Welcome to the club This problem has come up before. Fudge the difference is the answer !! I am sure it will go well for you Regards Ken
  20. Thanks Patrick. That is what I will do. I think i will also paint them before I put the bars in so that I dont get buff paint all over the black bars. I am also looking at using some A4 acetate sheet cut down to use as windows behind the bars Regards Ken
  21. I am at the stage of assembling the deck fittings on the Niagara The Companionway and Saloon Skylight etc. What is the best way to make a neat job of fitting the black bars to the windows? Thanks for your help Ken
  22. Hi Guys I dont know if this adds much to the debate about bumkins. But the Caldercraft kit includes them and some replica photos I have also include them Regards Ken
  23. Hello. I have taken a few pics of progress to date. The hull is nearly finished but I have not done any sanding filling or touching up of the paintwork. While I am working on the hull I have also started on the deck fittings Regards Ken PS Let me know if anyone wants more deatil
