Thank You for posting that Richard, really brings home the scale of those beasts ! the timbers are immense, I watched two Irish 'Tall' Ships being built from the ground up, but their scantlings would not come near that one, those Knees are impressive. The head room aboard surprised me, was she adapted and built to a modern persons height, or are the plans 'all new' do you know? Eamonn

Latest Update Hot off the Press.. Bulkhead Fillers are almost done, just have the Aft most pair to do tomorrow (those between No 10 & 11 B/Heads, they will need to be tapered to fit No 11 as it slopes backwards) They have really made the whole structure rigid! I feel now that I can bevel away happily without having to pick bits of bulkhead up from the floor, ah jeez! there are those 'famous last words again..' Will hopefully have some photos tomorrow as it is too dark here at present. Thanks for checking in folks. Sláinte Eamonn

Completely agree Craig, a very nice looking bit of work going on there! Thanks for the photo Lawrence, and it goes very well with your previous text, it does seem to be very 'Rabbet' like, and as such is indeed something which I will be doing (after 2nd planking in fact, to give a better idea as to where to put it exactly) Remember Folks All advice is welcome no matter how trivial you may think it is. Thanks in Advance Sláinte Eamonn Hopefully will be able to get some Filler Blocks done in the next day or two.. pictures to follow soon after

That deck looks great Casey, and I totally agree with you re the value of a good set of files (in fact it was one of the tool recommendations I got from Chuck when I was attempting to build Catheads a few months back) Keep up the brilliant work Sláinte Eamonn

Brilliant stuff as per usual Kester, it is all ahead of me! so prepare for an onslaught of 'How do I...' Feel free to use Nautical Lingo, am 'fairly' at home with it, the 'Bow' is that flat bit at the back right? Thanks for the rigging lesson Eamonn PS Gregor, Tony & Dirk, ye will all be in for 'Eamonn's Question Time too..'

Looking Good Jason, sorry but I can't be of any help re your questions, I haven't gotten that far ahead yet, and my new builds are probably too small to have any of those rope/shroud issues, not too many catharpins on schooners I feel (one benefit of not having 'Tops' ) Sláinte, Eamonn PS Photos look great to me!

Would 'general' history highlights be too vague? (or too much. for that matter, perhaps narrow it to Military, or a combination) Eamonn

Just some photos of the latest additions (to go with my Post No. 32 above).. All the Bulkheads are glued in position, the deck is only 'dry-fitted' to assist in aligning the B/Heads. In the Stern on shot, you may just be able to make out the 'thinning' of the Keel where the Stern Post will go to assist later planking (it is the beginnings of the Rabbet) but following great advice I haven't extended the Rabbet forward, this won't be done until 2nd planking (Thanks again to all those who are helping me along, it is much appreciated!) Nice.. this will be something to look forward to. Some of the other builders who are leaving their boats pretty much unpainted are giving them an 'old' look to simulate age (that is. simulate a very old model) your weathering (to simulate a well used working boat) should be a nice contrast. Jeez I love this boat I know I know I've said it before.. and you will no doubt hear it from me again!! All the Best J. Eamonn

Ok Then, all Bulkheads in place and glue is setting as we speak. That last one was a bit of a faf.. (No. 11, it isn't supported like the others but perches on the end of the keel former) I didn't use wood glue on this one but an 2 part epoxy, for extra security. Don't have any photos as that last B/Head is being held in place by a system of elastic bands, a clamp AND a Tape Measure (don't ask ) Will Post some tomorrow though! Next up the Filler Blocks at the Bow & Stern, most likely will put small blocks in place between all other Bulk Heads to keep things rigid as I finish bevelling. All The Best Eamonn

Extra to last post.. There is a piece in front and slightly to the left (Port ) of the Binnacle, it sits on the deck and it's top is obscured by the forward ships boat lifts, but you can just make out a silvered 'bar sticking up (it appears to stick up from the ships boat but I think it is from the Will's deck) This is probably your 'item', and as it is so close to the Wheel it is most likely the Telegraph, though in a slightly awkward position. Mick, by any chance is it meant to be the ships 'trottle' or Telegraph? if so then it will be very near to the Ships Wheel or Tiller !.. hope this is of some small use. Eamonn

I have every confidence that you will figure it out, sometimes good to step away from something for a time, have a cup of tea or something stronger , then get back to it with a fresh perspective. Best of Luck. Eamonn Edit.. I had no sooner posted my reply when up popped your complete Rudder .. nicely done!

Hi Lawrence, is that the illusive 'Rabbet' or am I picking you up wrong? if it is the Rabbet then 'Yup' that is exactly what I'll be doing later (following Nigel's advice in an earlier post) he recommends to do the first layer of planking before cutting the Rabbet, that way you can see exactly where it goes, and before attaching the Keel sections to make sanding this first layer easier. Have I picked you up right, or have I shoot off down a wrong turning? Actually on re reading your post I think I did take that 'wrong turning' and am now driving in the opposite direction Eamonn Edit.. Would I be a pain to ask if you have any pictures?

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
