I changed direction literally from North to South.. perhaps you mean change direction mentally.. ie Poles as in Poland perhaps (boat does have a somewhat Baltic look about it) ? Dang, Nigel that's 3 hours wasted looking for fishing boats with Maple Syrup in the name! See ye tomorrow folks Eamonn Edit: had a last look (kept thinking along original lines ie Pole = North Pole = Artic, add Canada & Women and you get High Canadian Latitudes and I think I've found her! or at least something darn close Is it Calanus ?
-
After a bit of a think & ponder re the clues and my 'Change' of direction.. would 'Southern Girl' (from a song by Cheap Trick apparently about Southern Canadian Ladies!) be in any way right? Eamonn
-
Mmmmmm 'Southern Lass Maple Syrup ? E Just kiddin Jay, will have a proper think later or tomorrow morning.. unless somebody pops in and nails it
-
Oh good grief.. bet my little 'rowing boat' is starting to look good right about now Nigel ! :) Eamonn Hmmmm clues are Poles.. Women & Canadian Does 'North Girls Maple Syrup' sound right? Eamonn
-
Jeeez that was tough.. looked so easy too! NOPE Come on guys, lets all gang up and try to stop David from having another turn .. that last one was rough :) Eamonn

Was looking at Morgan (and Hollywood moguls) last week, didn't spot the 'Jnr' though!! E Edit.. That may explain why I didn't spot the JNR teehee
-
I gave up Jan, went goggle eyed looking at smart white hulls! not even a close match did I find to urge me onward Eamonn Admitted defeat last week!

Tough decision there Mick, 'to paint or not to paint, that is the.. etc'. Almost seems a shame to cover a nice wooden deck though (admittedly Work Boats are after all 'WORK' Boats and a painted deck is easier to maintain than a plain timber affair ) Just a thought but some ships have a darkish green deck (we used to call it 'Deck Green', great 'naming' imagination on show there! ) but it gave a pleasant contrast to the Coaming and the Sides, though I have seen grey and even red used extensively too. I think it will look great whichever way you go Best of Luck Eamonn Later Edit : Strange coincidence has just popped into my head, I was only early this morning remembering the favoured colours my Dad put onto one particular boat many years ago.. Tangerine (don't ask ) and Dove Grey! with the grey going in a thick band at the waterline and covering the wooden decks!! E

I can commiserate with that 'where's the postman feeling'! (am waiting for a replacement for a missing bulwark from my Sherbourne kit, seems the first replacement went adrift in the post, so this is a replacement for the replacement, no 'biggy' for me as I won't be starting for a few months at the least, though I would rather have the piece than be waiting on it) Sorry to hear about your injuries (I didn't want to give your post from 20th November a 'Like' as it would sound like I 'Liked' your accident.. if you follow me ) Take Care Mick ok, the postman will be knocking on your door soon enough, and I will be looking forward to seeing the result Eamonn

Am in envy of your planking Bob, and you are about to cover it up with copper I'd hate to see the job you'd have done if it were to be left 'visible'.. I love where this build is taking us followers! I can sympathise with the wish to get away from planking though, can't wait to see what you have in store for us with the interior work. Eamonn

Narrowing down the field for first ship model
egkb replied to Bill Hime's topic in Wood ship model kits
Hi Bill, am loving the flow and prose of your posts and I shall be looking out for your log ! Quick question, could you perhaps put a mention in this post when you begin it.. that way we can be in at the start, I feel this may be one not to be missed both from the work and the writing. It is a simple pleasure to read this log.. Eamonn From a long line of Boat owners, Master Mariners & Marine Engineers.. sailors all, yet could hardly hammer a nail, and I've inherited the ability, alas -
That was the plan Jason, They had a big Eire (Ireland in the native language) painted on the side too.. didn't work for 2 of them though (if memory serves the Irish Oak & the Irish Pine) both were sunk in the Atlantic, bit before my time mind you These vessels were pretty much derelicts' bought up and put into service for the war period, ISL bought all new ships after the war and got up to a reasonable tonnage in the late 60's early 70's wit a 70000 tonner in the early 80's, just in time for the company to fold up as I entered my Cadetship.. Typical Eamonn Bear them in mind as you might see a few from me in future
-
And we have a winner!! well done David. Irish Shipping Ltd's SS Irish Alder (amongst the first vessels purchased by the Irish Government at the formation of ISL) company folded in the early 1980's Over to you David Eamonn

I see he has a bump on his head from the low beams.. sorry couldn't resist.. Am loving your ideas here, the whole project has a real ship-board life feel to it, if you follow me, this looks a fun build. Alas I ran out of 'likes' earlier today else I'd be liking those photos. Eamonn BTW Buckets & Barrels look amazing.. clever stuff going on here in this log!

Have only just found this build log as a result of your post to a now almost 'notorious' General Discussion Post! you know the one so I guess some more good has come out of it. I read your piece about how nobody dropped by for a month or so and decided to take a looksee.. Wow, how did I miss this little gem? and then after all your hard work she takes a bit of a knock.. This build has everything including 'drama' ! Am looking forward to your progress. Eamonn

Not the Oak Jan but you have the correct time period (they only had a very small handful of ships at this time!) have you gotten the Company yet? that would give you a massive boost in finding the ship! I was amongst the last group of Deck Cadets for this company, in fact I never got to sail with them as they 'folded' before I could join my ship (did get to spend a rather nice 2 week Induction Phase in a hotel in Cork City with the other Deck Cadets though ) had to finish Cadetship elsewhere.. Oh Well Eamonn
-
Just a quick 'heads-up'.. wrong World War Jan, try in the other one.. Eamonn
-
I love where this is going Mick, and to think this is a wooden planked hull!! I have never seen airbrushing done on a ship (have of course heard it mentioned here on MSW, just never seen it from the ground up as it were) why is there a difference between what you mixed yourself and 'proper' store bought spray paint? .. is it consistency or is the paint itself actually different? I assume (a dangerous thing to do ) that the base coat is very important from a colour and finish point of view (hope you don't mind all the questions here in one go ) Eamonn

All righty then Name the Shippers.. try this one for size, not on the same difficulty level with Pollux (I can think of a rhyming word that I would call that one.. ) The clues are in the photo.. some BIG obvious ones there for a start I reckon ye should only take about 20 to 30 mins of searching to find this.. if even that long!! Eamonn Clock Starts ... NOW...
-
Thanks Jan.. Pollux was the only ship I could find that even remotely looked like your post... though having said that I was almost going to offer Astrid as an answer.. Boy oh boy that was an awkward one Jan Give me a few hours guys and I'll have something worthy of your attention (hopefully not as tough as Pollux though ) Eamonn

Sorry Jan, haven't been able to put any time into your challenge recently.. sorry for leaving you 'hanging', hope to get back to you in next few days.. Looks like a bunch of us have abandoned you.. It isn't a conspiracy... Honest :) Eamonn Edit 19th Nov.. Have just finished 1 hour of searching... alas I have noting except a Dutch Brig called Pollux, of which I can find no more info.. We may need a few clues I'm afraid.. E

Jeez that is one teeny little chisel you have there.. Think I'd have to go lie down in a darkened room for a bit after using that little fella :) Beautiful work as per usual Augie.. tis a pleasure to follow along with you! Eamonn

Hi Larry, Thanks for the quick answer, I shall have to pick up a plank bender! Am currently making my way through a 1:46 scale Bounty (the one that came as a 'part-work' with a magazine a few years back, finally decided it was time to finish it, am at the rigging stage now.. it goes slowly.. but it goes ) there is a photo of its up-to-date (almost) state somewhere in the Current Photo of your Build (or whatever it is called ) section.. will see if I can find it and come back here with the details shortly. Eamonn Edit.. # 268 on page 18 of 'Latest Photo of Your Build'...or 'Latest something or other'.. dang I've forgotten that Sections name AGAIN! and I was only just there !! Edit Again.. 'Latest Full Profile Photograph of your Build' I copy/pasted it this time.. E

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
