Hi Grant Let me add my congratulations to the rest. That is one beautiful ship. I personally think that the rigging is what makes a model ship come alive and you're rigging is stunning! Hope you add all the other photos you took in the completed ship gallery (hint hint... ) Nick

Hi Grant Absolutely exquisite! Good job you showed us that massive hand. There was me thinking those boats were actually quite small! Nick

Hi Al Spilling is best described (I think) by Chuck on this page: http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-framing-and-planking-articles.php Look at this article: Planking Tutorial - Lining Off a Hull. I am using it on my Le Mirage build. Try it with some card to get the idea. I found once I got my head around it it wasnt too difficult conceptually. Spilling doesnt contradict the rule of thumb that only the top edge of the plank should be tapered. Hope this helps Nick

Hi Michael Thank you for your nice comment. At first I was a bit nervous about doing the second planking this way but I have to admit (Modest? Moi? :D ) I'm pretty pleased at the way it's turning out! Since I'm here might was well give a small update (sorry no photos). Spent 40 minutes last night getting the shape right for the first plank of the garboard strake. Think it looks ok. Hopefully the others will be quicker! Nick

Hi All Right here are a few pictures of a garboard plank run. The edge of the plank is the top edge (when the ship is the right way up!) of the making tape. So as I have absolutely no idea can anyone tell me if this look even remotely right? (where's that "HELP!" emoticon when you need it! ) Cheers Nick

Hi all Thanks a lot for the comments and likes. Nigel: Dont worry I am no more confused than I already was . Just kidding I think I see what you mean. Once I sit down in front of Le Mirage and go over your message I'm sure it will become crystal clear. Some tape and posting a picture sounds like an excellent idea! Thanks in advance for your help . Sjors: Thanks for your kind comment. Maybe but given my progress rate..... You'll have finished both your current builds (which are looking excellent I must say!) before my second planking is done I'm planning to use Danish oil on this build. I just love the warm dull (not shiny) sheen is gives. When I'll put it on is a completely different matter as oil and glue dont mix so I guess I want to put it on as late as possible but not before there's too much stuff in the way. Guess I'll cross that bridge once I've crossed the 223 others before it JPett: Thank you for your comment. Genius??!?!?!? I'm sorry I think you have me confused with someone else... No I just followed the instructions. I'm surprised the Victory does not use a similar method. To answer your last question I am not tinting the wood but I am planning to use danish oil as a finish. Evening everyone Update time. Another planking section finished. Woohoo! Two more to go before second planking end milestone! Here are few photos. and finally... I do have one question. Although I have no reason (well... ) to doubt Nigel's assertion that the garboard plank shape will reveal itself how can I split the last section into strips as the garboard is supposed to be slightly bigger? (Just to be clear I'm using the fanout template to work out plank widths and this assumes all planks are equally wide) Surely I need to put the garboard in first and then split the remaining part of the section? Any pointers gratefully received. Thanks for looking in. Nick

Evening all Small update. Another planking section complete. Getting there despite the fact this build sometimes makes me feel like a slow snail at the bottom of Mount Everest... Looking up... Anyhoo enough terrible jokes. Here are a couple of progress pictures: Nigel a belated thanks for the comment. Yes walnut can be brittle although the stuff I'm using now is far better than what I had when I planked the keel. Now that was horrible stuff. Thanks for looking Nick

Hey Rich! Really nice build you got going. Certainly a different beast to the Bluenose! Nick PS: Just realised I never sent you those photos of the Bluenose rigging... Hope you didnt wait!

Evening all Thanks to WackoWolf, maggsl_01 and Aussie048 for the likes. Thanks Nigel and Sjors for the comments. Nigel I am cutting the planks from sheet with a X-acto knife (haven't got space or money for power tools...yet...hopefully ) It's not too bad but I think I could benefit from getting a ship's curve for the curved sections. I'm finding it quite difficult to get nice smooth curves. You mean to tell me this is the easy bit??!?! Nick

Hi Sjors Haha yes you can imagine it. "What no more walnut. Oh well this will do..." Thanks for your feedback Mike. Interesting comments about the scarph joints. I took my inspiration from drawings I saw on the Ancre website but have to admit I didn't really research that area (or any...) properly. Maybe just two different ways of doing them I guess? Nick

Thanks Sjors and Michael for the comments although I'm not so sure about the museum one though Interestingly enough Corel used to supply walnut for the second layer of planking. Says so in the instructions (still) and you can see that on the photo on the box (start of the log). Wonder why they changed to a lighter wood. Nick
