Greetings from Pennsylvania
pontiachedmark replied to Goop Doopis's topic in New member Introductions
Gidday and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. If you have a period or type of ship in mind I would suggest a search of the build logs. If you have nothing in mind I would still look at the build logs to determine what is entailed. In my humble opinion a lot of kits are not historically accurate but are comprised of several ships or a lot of artistic license. An analogy from another of my hobbies, "Some fishing lures are designed to catch fishermen not fish". The above can also be said of some model kits. Personally a choice is influenced by what I like, i.e. the lines, complexity and budget. If I didn't like the ship I would not be motivated enough to finish it. I hope I have not confused the issue. I wish you all the best in your selection. Mark. -

Gidday Doug and a warm welcome from the Land Downunder. You have joined a group whose knowledge and expertise is second to none. If I may offer a couple of friendly pieces of advice, I would encourage you to ask as many questions as needed if and when you become unsure. If you have not already search the build logs for your model or similar. Dry fit parts before opening the glue. Above all - Enjoy yourself. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday Sanders and a warm welcome from the Land Downunder. As you have stated it is a great idea to search or just spend time reading through the build logs. I sincerely hope your father is O.K. A couple of pieces of friendly advice, Read and reread the instructions, I know some instructions are vague and leave a lot to be desired but they are where most of us start. Dry fit everything before opening the glue. Seek advice and do not be afraid to ask questions. Above all - enjoy yourself. This hobby is not meant to be a chore. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Advise on a particular model-1st build
pontiachedmark replied to Christa's topic in New member Introductions
Gidday Christa and a warm welcome from the Land Downunder. I can only second what has been said in the above posts. One thing I would advise is to search the build logs for this kit or ship. You will see what is entailed in the build and any, hopefully, pitfalls or shortcomings in the kit. I wish you all the best in your research. Mark. -
Gidday Steve and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. If I may pass on some friendly advice, Check out the build logs if you have a particular kit or type of model in mind, I frequently look at the various logs to while away some spare time. Search for recommendations on beginners kits. Enjoy yourself and take your time. I wish you al the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday all. I usually read the instructions and accompanying photos, sometimes this leads to more confusion, as I like to get an overall idea of the build process. I do bounce around a bit as mark says in Post#2 building deck furniture or assembling masts etc. while waiting for things to dry. Very interesting subject and I am looking forward to others input. Wishing you all the best. Mark.

Gidday Salty Dog. I am liking this PE. The build looks like it is progressing well. By the way a 1968 Parisienne, very much like the U.S. Bonneville. Wishing you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday Kikatinalong. Welcome from a cold and wet Bairnsdale Victoria. Feeling daunted or unsure of where to start are not uncommon feelings when building a kit. A couple of pieces of friendly advice, Search in the build logs for your kit or ship, your exact kit may not be in the logs but the same ship may be. Read and reread the instructions to gain an understanding of the various kit pieces and the assembly process. Dry fit as much as possible as it is easier to rectify any kit deficiencies dry than when glued in place. Ask as many questions as you need to. I could go on and on and on but I think I have said enough to get you started. I wish you all the best in your endeavours, Mark.

New to forum but not ship modeling
pontiachedmark replied to Jim J's topic in New member Introductions
Gidday Jim and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. You certainly appear to have the experience needed to enjoy this fascinating hobby. I advise everyone to search the build logs, not only for their particular kit as I find the logs educational and a great read. You may find an alternative method or approach to a build. Personally I have corrected some bad habits I picked up along the way by finding methods that suit me, habits in modelling not life generally. Once again welcome and I am looking forward to your build. Mark.
