Gidday Peter. I have jumped in a tad late for your impressive build. I also like these sea going tugs and one is on the backburner, too many projects and not enough life left. Wishing you all the best in your endeavours, Mark.

Wood for decking
pontiachedmark replied to JamesT1's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Gidday Jim. Have you decided on timber for the deck planks? No rush I am just curious by nature. If you are not happy with Basswood, have you looked into Beech? Wishing you all the best in your endeavours, Mark. -
Gidday all. Mark I like your work. Is that black line a hair? I thought a "Daisy Cutter" was an aerial bomb that detonates above ground. Maybe I misunderstand the term, it would not be the first time. Maybe some more knowledgeable members can enlighten me. All the best, Mark.

Wood for decking
pontiachedmark replied to JamesT1's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Gidday Jim. I have found Boxwood or basswood, if you can source it, is a good planking material. Where in the world are you? This may have some bearing on availability. Another factor is cost. The postage charges from some countries make purchases exorbitant. What timber is supplied with the kit? I apologise for posing more questions than answers but I feel they are relevant. Wishing you all the best, Mark. -
Gidday James. While I do not have a definitive answer to your question I find the topic fascinating. I have searched on naming conventions for the US, British and Aussie Navies and find the more you look the deeper down the rabbit hole you go. I hope some of the more knowledgeable members can assist with your query. I for one will be following with interest. Wishing you all the best, Mark.

Good morning from Bonny Scotland

Gidday Jim and a warm welcome from the Land Downunder. You have found a site where members possess a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise. You will find the collective knowledge is freely shared and questions are encouraged. If you haven't already I would suggest a search of the build logs as this will assist in your selection of model. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark. -
Gidday Edward and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. A good choice for a first model. Beware this pastime gets into your blood. You will find a lot of support and encouragement here. A couple of thoughts, Search the build logs for your Jolly Boat and the HMS Surprise, you will gain an understanding of the build process. Ask questions when and if you become unsure of something. Remember that no question is unworthy of an answer. I wish you all the best in your build. Mark.

Gidday OC. She sure is looking fine. I like the black and white pics. I wish you and your family all the best. Mark.

Gidday Mark. Fantastic work. I not only need tweezers I would need bionic eyes. I am impressed by the attention to detail and the high standard of work. Is the dog alright? I hope so. Wishing you all the best. Mark.

Gidday Peter and a warm welcome from the Land Downunder. Follow marks link in Post #2 and search for HMS Supply. I second Keiths suggestion in Post #3 re starting your own build log. You will find the members here are willing to offer advice and support with any issues you encounter. You can also type in specific titles to search for relevant information. We all require some assistance and guidance at times to clarify things. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday Edward and a warm welcome from the Land Downunder. You pose a very interesting question and the answer is anything but straightforward. Many considerations including, scale, type or class, budget and ability need to be considered. I would suggest a search of the various build logs to assist in your model selection. One major consideration is obviously your preference in model as you may receive a lot of recommendations. Obviously these are just some of my personal thoughts and I sincerely hope I haven't confused the issue. Wishing you all the best in your search. Mark.

Gidday Dr PS. In my opinion you have made the correct decision to restart. I agree with Mr Bob Cleek about not being ignored but members being asleep. You would be well advised to search the build logs to see how the various pitfalls have been overcome. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday Tony and another warm welcome from the Land Downunder. You have found a site where the members knowledge and expertise is second to none. One suggestion is to look at the various build logs as they may assist in deciding which ship you build. I still look into various build logs for inspiration and to assist in problem solving. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday everyone, I am jumping into the thread a tad late. Currently I am building the OcCre Apostol Felipe Galleon,( No build log as I am currently without camera). A couple of observations, If I could source a similar wood for a reasonable cost I would replace the deck planking material for a more consistent product. The instructions, as in a lot of kits, leave a lot to be desired. Having said that I believe one should read through the instructions and plans to gain an understanding of construction. The quality of the laser cut parts and fitment is very good. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. Mark.

Gidday Jo. Ask for a staff discount at Bunnings. (Forgive my attempt at humour). Regarding the use of a rasp, that is a serious file that really does create deep scratches. Be cautious and try not to file the frames when filing the filler blocks. Personally I would use the Dremel but different strokes for different folks. I hope I haven't confused the issue. All the best. Mark.

Gidday O.C. I had faith in you overcoming your temporary malaise. She sure is looking good. I also hope your dental situation improves. Wishing you and your family all the best. Mark.
-
Gidday Michael. I have been thinking about this kit for a while. You have done an outstanding job so far. I look forward to your future posts. Wishing you all the best with your endeavours. Mark.
